Summary

This listing is for a large, comfy private BR in a quiet, sun-filled apartment on a high floor in a safe, friendly pre-war elevator building in the heart of Morningside Heights. You will be just steps from Columbia and Barnard Universities and a few blocks from the Manhattan School of Music, Jewish and Union Theological Seminaries, and Riverside, Morningside and Central Parks. With high-speed wifi, cable TV, printer, dishwasher, microwave, a/c, 24-hour laundry room and evening doorman

Space

This is a peaceful apartment with all the comforts of home. It is a perfect size for traveling couples or individuals, students or professionals, who are looking for a quiet and comfortable place near any of the nearby schools or a welcoming home base for their city vacation experience. There is a queen-sized bed in the private bedroom (it's not a pull out couch, despite what it looks like in the pictures; I built a frame off of the couch and put an extra comfy queen mattress on top of it). The room overlooks a quiet courtyard from a high floor. It also has a desk, air conditioner, ceiling fan, cable TV, printer and a classic New York view of building tops and water towers The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking and is sunny and bright all day long, making it very comfortable to cook, work or just hang out in. The bathroom has classic pre-war fixtures, a large tub, strong water pressure and hot water 24/7.

Neighborhood Overview

The apartment is located in Morningside Heights, a picturesque neighborhood just north of Manhattan's Upper West Side. It is just across the street from Columbia's historic campus and less than a block away from the beautiful and green Riverside Park, a great place for a relaxing stroll, jog or bike ride along the Hudson River. It's also walking distance from Harlem, Central Park, and the Upper West Side. The neighborhood is also home to Barnard College, Grant's Tomb, Riverside Church, The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Morningside Park, and an assortment of great restaurants, cafes, diners, book shops, and stores and shops of every kind. Morningside Heights is simultaneously vibrant and low-key, an area that many say is one of the few remaining genuinely 'neighborly' neighborhoods in NYC - a great place to stay when visiting the city.

Access

There's a brand new laundry room in the basement, and you will also have access to the building's courtyard with a sitting area and basketball hoop

Great experience staying at this beautiful apartment. Sunny all day and cozy at night. The neighborhood, right by Columbia, was perfect—especially with all the flowers in bloom on campus and in nearby Riverside Park. Paul was an awesome host, super-accommodating, with lots of tips about great places to eat. Can't wait to stay here again!

Paul was generous with an early check-in and helped us settle in to his cozy apartment.

We found the place serendipitously when another booking fell through and couldn't be happier. Not only was the place exactly what we needed but Paul is a genuinely nice, kind, interesting human being and it has been a pleasure to get to know him. We stayed as a couple for just over a month and miss it already. Paul showed us around the neighbourhood when we first got there and was easily contactable thereafter. Paul's place is a unique gem decorated with his quirky eye for colour, style and collectible treasures. It has a cozy well decked out living room, a bedroom with a closet and a comfortable bed, spacious bathroom and a nice, sunny, open-plan kitchen surrounded by windows. It is neat and well organised. There is cooling and heating in every room (plus fans), and the kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans, and other requirements along with a nice big fridge and freezer. We found the place had everything we needed for a comfortable long-term stay. For us, the location so close to three big parks (incl. Central Park), Columbia and Harlem, was just right. There are transport options aplenty: bikes up and down Riverside Park, the 1 MTA line two blocks away and frequent Broadway buses. Paul kindly lent us his two bikes which was a fab way to get around the city. Being located on the border of UWS is great as it is a relatively quiet area to stay but the rest of Manhattan is readily accessible through the 1 line meaning we got the best of Manhattan action combined with good sleeping! Would stay again in a flash!

I had a great stay! Paul was a great host, with helpful recommendations in the area. Definitely book with him if you can.

Classic Upper West Side apartment in a quiet residential building very close to Columbia University. Comfortable bed, well-equipped kitchen, sitting room, good water pressure. Paul was a great host with friendly and proactive communication. We met him to receive the key and instructions, and then had the place to ourselves for the rest of the weekend. Would stay again!

A beautiful eat in kitchen which has clearly been recently upgraded. Vistas of the church steeples was novel. The breezes from Riverside Park kept it cool as did AC units in each room.

Paul's place was perfectly located! I came into town for a conference at Columbia and was mere blocks away. Riverside park was also a nice surprise, as well as an abundance of grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops and bookstores. The subway was one block away. The apartment was cozy and fully stocked. It had everything I needed and then some!

I hate to start out with such a great review because I'd like to keep this hidden gem for myself! Paul's place is awesome! Great space and great location! I was in NYC for 2 weeks at Columbia and the location was just a few blocks away. I didn't want to deal with transit in the AM, although that would not have been a big issue anyway. Plus, it's right off broadway (the broadway that has shows) so subways access was great. Since it's a college town, I felt super safe and there were minimal tourists and minimal bums also. A couple things to note: this is actually Paul's residence so there are some personal affects to be mindful of. I really appreciated that though because I was able to tap into the Tylenol and bandaids in the medicine cabinet over the course of 2 weeks. Hey, anything can happen! He was totally respectful of my privacy and wasn't popping in or out during my stay. I'm hopeful that if Teachers college has anymore trainings that I get to go to, Paul's place is available!

Paul is a kind, interesting man who made us feel completely welcome. He went out of his way to be accommodating. The apartment is large & sunny, an unexpected treat in Manhattan. The location could not be better for a Columbia U. visit. The bed/mattress was top notch. If you are not used to NYC apartments you might feel put off by ANY pre-war apartment, but this is among the much better ones!

My husband and I had a private room in Paul’s apartment. Paul’s place is bright, comfortable, clean, and beautifully and uniquely decorated. The apartment is quiet and is located on one of the top floors of the building, providing views and the sounds of birds chirping. It is a few steps from Columbia and to the convenient red line. Paul was a gracious and considerate host, greeting us on arrival with a warm welcome and snacks. We always felt comfortable and free to hang out, make meals, and talk. Hands down one of the best airBnBs I’ve ever had the pleasure to stay in. It’s a NYC gem!

This is my first time as an AirBnB guest (I hosted for over a year when AirBnB had just started and had good experiences as a host). Paul, my host, hit it out of the park. The location is outstanding. Such a lovely upper west side block, across the street and around the corner from Columbia. I was visiting my son who is a student there. Even if Columbia wasn't your destination, Paul's apartment is one block from lovely Riverside Park and the Hudson River. Morningside park is a few blocks to the east. Central Park North and Cathedral Parkway are 5-10 minutes away. The 1 train stops 2-4 blocks away. The UWS is very gracious. The pace is less frenetic which is a nice thing at the end of a day of NYC touring. Yet the nearness of Columbia gives the neighborhood a youthful hip vibe. And Columbia's campus is outstanding; lovely and compact. I felt safe coming and going from Paul's building. The building was well maintained. The hallway outside his door wasn't dark and depressing. There is a laundry in the basement and a garbage chute in the hall on his floor. Paul's apartment is decorated with an artist's eye; the furniture, art, even the plates and skillets, were beautiful, colorful, special. The kitchen/sitting room was filled with light! Everything was in its place. My bedroom had a very big, comfortable bed. The bed linens were soft; the colors were muted and restful. There was plenty of drawer and closet space. The table lighting was exceptional. I had a lovely view of a church and Columbia outside my bedroom window. Paul was so kind to welcome me very early due to my 5a arrival into JFK on a red eye from SF. He was quickly responsive when I requested my stay. He met me and welcomed me into his home. He made me tea, fruit and nuts. He gave me plenty of towels and wash clothes. He gave me a shelf in the bathroom for my toiletries. I unpacked, showered (plenty of hot water), and headed out to my first meeting. Paul was lovely to talk to, yet respectful of my privacy. He welcomed both of my young adult children into his home. My daughter (who is graduating from NYU) cooked 2 breakfasts in Paul's kitchen. She so enjoyed his window seat in his kitchen. My son lingered and did schoolwork at the kitchen table. Paul's space was so much more gracious than a dorm room! Paul even printed out my boarding pass when I was out and about. He also printed 36 pages of work that I had completed while spending the day in the libraries at Columbia and the cafes near Columbia while my son wrote a paper. Making that personal connection with Paul enhanced my stay. But he was so quiet and gracious that guests who want to keep to themselves would also be comfortable. My son has 3 more years at Columbia and...

Extremely clean, quiet and close to Barnard and Columbia campuses, transportation and places to eat. Paul was generous with his time and his space while allowing us great privacy. We would return without pause.

Paul's apartment is a corner apartment in one of the typical New York buildings around Colombia university. The location could not be better. You are at the doorstep of Colombia as well as on a short walking distance to St John the Divine and Central Park. The 1-line (subway) is literally around the corner so Midtown is very easy to reach. The apt is quiet and I slept really well. Paul knows the area very well and was very generous not only sharing his apt but also his inside tips & tricks about the area. Paul is a genuine person who does whatever he can to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Great place, exactly what I needed. Paul was a great host and will for sure be returning when needed. He gave me my space as needed but was always there when and if I needed him for anything. Feel like I made a friend in NYC :) Thanks again Paul!!

Paul's place is a great place to stay. Paul was very helpful with finding out what was happening in the city, suggestions for where to go, getting to know and navigate the area, and was fun to talk with about the history and character of the neighborhood and NY. He was great about check-in and out. He is very thoughtful and accommodating and I would definitely stay here again!

As a visiting student at Columbia University, my 3-month stay was really pleasant and comfortable. Paul is always considerate while giving me enough privacy. The apartment has everything I need, including all the facilities and a cozy bedroom, so it just feel like home. Columbia main campus is just cross the street. Subway is 5min walk. Plenty of food and grocery stores around. 5min walk from riverside park.

Paul's communication at every stage of the process was fabulous from our initial inquiry to our arrival time. He met us outside his apartment, got us settled in, answered endless questions about places to eat and get coffee, and how to manage the subway and trains for our various expeditions. He was unfailingly in good cheer. And I would absolutely stay with him again.

Loved our stay! Paul is warm, responsive, full of local tips, and genuinely happy to have us guests around. And yet unobtrusive — never had to compete for the bathroom (I was worried about the shared bath beforehand), and I always felt like we had complete privacy when we needed it. Location cannot be beat; just two minutes to Barnard and Columbia and the subway. Easy to hop on subway to get to Broadway shows too. Parking was free and fairly easy, and I was always able to park within a block or two. I only had to move my car once to avoid street cleaning. On 8th floor so quiet and bed is a comfy; we slept like babies. We enjoyed Paul and his home so much we feel like we have a family member in the city and plan to be back!

This place exceeded all of my expectations. Paul made me feel right at home -- arranged keys at times good for me, helped move my stuff, made the kitchen free and available, and overall provided a warm, comfortable environment. Highly recommended.

Paul is friendly and considerate. His place is very close to the Columbia Univerisity. I was overall satisfied, but one minor issue was that the heater sometimes made some noise that woke me up.
