The Puna district is a huge triangle area encompassing territory between Hilo, Volcano, Pahoa and Kalapana. Kilauea's latest eruption began on May 3, 2018 with lava flowing continuously until August 6, 2018. The affected Puna area, in the southeast corner of the island comprises ONE PERCENT of the island of Hawaii, which is larger than all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined. We have additional information on the Kilauea Flow in our Profile. This is a unique area and is relatively undeveloped maintaining it's origin. Agriculture is still a large part of the subsistence economy. We are located close e

WoW! Thank You hosts Kaeo & Karl for making our stay extra special on our anniversary. Everything was just as you promised and more. The little details and love you put into everything really showed. The grounds are lovely with more varieties than we could count. The Ohana was private, cute, clean, private, comfy, did I mention private! Our hosts are warm, fun, interesting folks with lots of Aloha. We'll be back for more staycations in the future. We highly recommend this little slice of the forest. Thank You, Christina & David

Great hosts and great accommodations ! Very helpful and welcoming hosts! The rental was very comfortable and private. Has anything you need for a vacation getaway on the big island, they even let us borrow boogie boards and snorkels for the beach. By far the best value on the island. We look forward to returning one day soon!! Thank you again for a wonderful experience and memories!

This was one of my best stays. The cottage was well set up and priced fairly. A lot of thought had gone into small things. The hosts were very warm and helpful and made me feel like a very welcome guest. I was able to come and go at any time as I pleased, which was handy for the volcano viewing.

***German review below*** We absolutely loved our stay at Kaeo & Karl's hale. Actually, we both agreed that it was the best accommodation we have stayed in on all of the Hawaiian islands so far (hadn't changed yet either). Kaeo & Karl were so nice & welcoming and made our stay even nicer and more memorable by giving us great tips on local activities & beaches, and sharing their garden-grown fruits with us. The hale was clean & comfortable with many nice touches & attention to detail. The "outdoor shower", which I was initially afraid of would mean showering on the lawn being bitten in the butt by mosquitoes, turned out to be a clean and beautiful separate room with a large window for good views into the rainforesty garden. You definitely need a car to get there, it's a little out of the way, but we enjoyed that most and the privacy the hale and our hosts allowed us. Waking up and feeling as if you're alone in a rainforest is pretty cool & special. Thank you Kaeo & Karl for the lovely time! We'd come back in a heartbeat.

The room is cozy, where cozy really means cozy and is not just a euphemism for small. It's not just cute, but also comfortably and thoughtfully set up. We found everything we needed tucked away, from pots and pans for cooking to fresh fruits to flashlights and even jam for breakfast. The property is like a big garden, with flowers and fruits everywhere. Kaeo is friendly and attentive to details, but also respectful of our privacy. She even made us cookies, very thoughtful. If we come to the big island again some day we want to stay here again!

Kaeo and Karl are great hosts. They'll help you with anything if needed and let you be at the same time. The room is perfectly equiped, and we even got some delicious fruits and homemade sweets! Staying there allowed us to discover the tropical part of the island, and we loved the peace we found in the eco hale. Definitely recommend it.

Everything about the Eco Hale was perfect! The space is super comfortable, and Kaeo's provisions were more than generous. She even shared homemade pie and cookies with us! I would recommend that anyone looking for the ideal peaceful, comfortable place to stay book with Kaeo and Karl. Thank you both again for an excellent stay.

Staying at EcoHale was amazing! The location is secluded, the property is beautiful and peaceful, the studio room is lovely and comfortable. Karl and Kaeo are very friendly, but they respected our privacy. I've almost never been able to relax as completely as at EcoHale!

You definitely should not miss to stay at the rainforest in Big Island - what a unique experience and the natural music starting with dusk is invaluable! You can easily explore the volcano from there and get a very good feeling how live is on a tropical island. We unfortunately just met Kaeo, she is wonderful host and we got everthing to feel like home in their new built garden house! The bath/restroom is amazing, it is inside but it felt like having a shower directly in the rainforest. Additionally we could taste all fruits, most fresh from the garden, and Hawaiian food! Choose for Big Island and this unique stay at Kaeo´s and Karl´s place!

We had a lovely stay at Karl and Kaeo's cabin. It was very quiet and cozy with all the little details thought of including bug spray, chocolates, nuts, beach gear, flashlights. Every time I thought "it would be great if we had ____" we would find it somewhere. They left us fresh fruit for breakfast too. We didn't see them much during our stay but it was obvious they've put a lot of thought into the experience and are very gracious guests!

This was our absolute favorite place we stayed during our trip to Hawaii! The cottage was a bit outside of town, and honestly, on the drive out there I was not too thrilled that my husband had booked something so remote... but that feeling went away as soon as we pulled into the property! Kaeo met us outside and was so warm and welcoming. The cottage is SO lovely. It was clean and the kitchen was very well-stocked for its small size. Everything was so well designed and organized. The bathroom was beautiful - incredibly bright with floor to ceiling windows. There were so many wonderful treats waiting for us when we arrived! Homemade cookies, nuts, trail mix, and a cooler with papaya, rambutans (make sure to try these while you're in Hawaii - so delicious!), longan berries, passion fruit... truly amazing and generous! There was even a Hawaiian Christmas stocking with some treats. We loved listening to the different Hawaiian music CDs on the boom box. There were some great books, as well (both novels and ones about Hawaiian sights and natural history). I really just can't say enough good things about Eco Hale and Kaeo (we didn't meet Karl during our stay). It was perfect for us. We highly recommend it to anyone and everyone and can't wait to go back!!

We stayed at Eco Hale and had a fabulous time exploring the island! Dido to what others have said about the space being beautiful and clean with many wonderful details and amenities to use if we needed. I was worried about a separate bathroom, but it's right next door and very well done. We didn't stay long enough to take advantage of everything Eco Hale had to offer, but it was a perfect retreat in the middle of the rain forest to start our adventure.

The craftsmanship and the comfort of the Eco Hale is exceptional. I especially liked the bathroom and the kitchen area. Kaeo and Karl are also wonderful hosts.

  • David

Eco Hale seemed welcoming from the moment we arrived, and Kaeo's personal welcome, which included a tour of the rainforest garden they've helped create around their property, furthered the impression. We ended up dividing our time roughly between sleeping, meal-making/eating, and reading there at the cottage and seeing Hilo (buying the food we needed from the Farmers Market) and the Volcanoes Park, where we did as many hikes as we could. Rainforest is an apt appellation: We saw a lot of rain during our week! Karl and Kaeo are attentive but never intrusive hosts, a balance much appreciated. The coqui frogs sang us to sleep, or that's the way we took it. Kaeo would make the perfect guide to all things Hawaiian. Karl's artisanry is evident in the cottage's details; notice particularly the bathroom's fine tile work. All around we felt welcomed at Eco Hale.

We loved this cute off the grid cabin surrounded by the tropical rainforest. Kaeo was a great host and really fun to talk to. Absolutely loved this taste of Hawaii, and it was perfectly located to travel the southern and eastern parts of Hawaii. We would absolutely stay here again!

The Eco Hale was an amazing rainforest getaway! As other guests note, every little detail has been considered, making this the most "all inclusive" Airbnb properties I've ever encountered. Despite its petite dimensions, everything I could want was packed into this pleasant stand-alone cabin, and Kaeo was a lovely host. It was a wonderful home base for adventures at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and exploring the southeast corner of the island. I loved the sound of the frogs and birds and even thunderstorms for bedtime music. I picked fresh tangerines for the best-ever breakfast juice right from the lanai, and when I asked Kaeo about how to enjoy the fresh coconut, she got out her tools and helped me crack into it - there's nothing finer than fresh coconut water for an evening cocktail in the rainforest. This isn't a beach resort, but in fact, I liked it better. It was fairly quiet, private, and truly exotic, but almost as comfortable as home. I hope to return someday with my husband in tow!

We had a great stay at Ecohale. Its a well designed and beautiful cabin in a lush tropical setting, obviously a lot of time and thought went into making everything perfect. The location is convenient for day trips to the Volcano or Pahoa. Kaoe and Karl were perfect hosts, warm and welcoming, happy to answer any question but also gave us our privacy. We would be happy to stay here again.

The Eco Hale Cottage is very charming and private. The cottage accommodations were very nice and the surrounding gardens were lush and beautiful. Kaeo did a great job of providing a lot of little extras that were most welcome as we arrived and were helpful throughout our three-night visit. The location, though remote in feel, is only 10 miles from the national park and so we could stay to see the lava glowing at night and still be able to drive back to the cottage before too late. There are no restaurants or grocery stores close by, so it might be advisable to stock up and/or eat before arriving (The cottage is 4-5 miles after exiting the main road.) We would recommend staying here to anyone who was interested in exploring Volcano National Park.

Kaeo & Karl with on a beautiful rainforest acreage. Kaeo wasn't home when we arrived and the gate was locked. Luckily she drove up 5 minutes after us. The Eco Hale was a quaint granny flat at the next to the main house. Although nestled in the rainforest and offers complete seclusion and privacy. Upon arrival we were welcomed with home baked cookies, apple bananas, nuts, juice in addition to the fruit trees just outside. And a big binder full of information about the area and island. There is also beach equipment available to use. Eco Hale is only about 30minutes from Volcano National Park. And about 30 minutes to Hilo. Great location to Pahoa. We truly enjoyed our time at the Eco Hale.

We stayed at Eco Hale for 3 nights and are very glad we did. Kaeo went above and beyond to make sure my daughter and myself were comfortable and happy, and she provides all the amenities one could ask for in a rental cabin~ there is even beach gear available to borrow, much appreciated! Eco Hale is in a great location with easy access to Pahoa, Hilo, and Volcano. I will recommend Eco Hale to my family and friends for sure.

Let me put it this way: Eco Hale is located where Eve and Adam lived until they were expelled for making a bad choice. Seriously, it's paradise: The rainforest blends perfectly with the garden that Kaeo keeps so beautiful. You have to see it -and hear it, because after sunset, the coquí frogs perform a real symphony throughout the night. Kaeo and Karl are natural hosts -attentive, friendly, generous and helpful. Chatting with them is a joy, as they have so many insights and ideas to share about making the most of a visit to the Big Island. Their cabin is comfortable, clean, attractive and cozy, a perfect place for a couple or a solo traveler looking for a natural haven. Breakfast, dinner or a drink at the lanae is a must. I love apples, but if I were offered to bite it at Eco Hale, I would never do it in order to stay in that paradise forever.

Kaeo and Karl are fantastic. They have such great vibes and their cottage expresses the amount of love that they have for Hawaii. There are different snacks and details that make the place cozy and authentic. It is probably one of the coolest places that I have stayed (and I have stayed in castles in Europe and other awesome places). Their place is in the jungle, requires flashlights to get around the grounds when it is dark (which they provide), and has a tranquil atmosphere with bird sounds (leave the iPod at home). It is really clean and fresh space with an outdoor seating area (don't miss the only giraffe on the island). Overall, really warm people with a beaitiful cottage. They will make you feel like Ohana (family) from the moment you drive up to their Eco Hale cottage.

Kate was experiencing some respiratory problems because, we think, of ash in the air. Kaeo and Karl were concerned, checking in the next morning to see how we were doing. And - that was emblamatic of their care. They were wonderful. The place was just as described. A retreat in a cultivated jungle! We did a lot of exploring from this base. We loved it. When we left and left behind a kindle, Karl and Kaeo were most helpful in getting it back to us.. Thank you!

My visit in Hawai'i was nothing short of enchanting, having beginning our stay in Hilo at Eco hale cottage. Kaeo and Karl are the kindest souls I've had the pleasure of meeting; and their hidden oasis in mountain view is something I will not soon forget. Being completely new to the island I was pleasantly surprised with a surplus of information and tips provided in the cottage (including first hand experiences, anecdotes and menus!). I felt more than at home, welcomed and warmed with hospitality. I will be dreaming of the lullabies of the coqui for weeks to come. :)

We had a great time in Kaeo and Karl place!! The little cottage is beautiful, very well made, very cleaned and well equipped. Open our eyes in the morning with the sunlight that goes through that beautiful rain forest garden was an incredible experience, unforgettable!!! Kaeo and Karl are incredibly nice and friendly, very helpful and have respect for the guests privacy. This is absolutely the place to stay in Big Island if you want to explore Hilo, Volcano National Park and Puna area.

My husband and I spent four nights in Eco Hale and enjoyed the chorus of frogs and gentle patter of rain on the roof--in addition to the beautiful garden of fruit trees, flowers and tropical plants. The cozy cottage had everything we needed for our rainforest stay and Kaeo and Karl were wonderful hosts. Day trips into Hilo, Volcano National Park and all points on the southern side of the Big Island were easy from the cottage's central location. The fresh fruit and delicious bread provided were an extra special treat!

This was by far our favourite place of the three we stayed in and our only complaint is that we didn't book longer here! The place is absolute paradise, not only in a beautiful location in the rainforest, close to Volcanoes national park and within easy reach of Hilo (try the kava bar and Pineapples restaurant in downtown Hilo!) but also really nicely decorated and with more amenities we thought possible in such a small space - and the bathroom was like a five star hotel, immaculately clean and with gorgeous decorative and luxurious touches. Kaeo and Karl were wonderful hosts - warm, friendly and helpful, and incredibly generous with their gifts of fresh fruit and home-baked muffins that we found outside the Hale every evening of our short stay. We would recommend Eco Hale without hesitation and would really love to stay again (for longer next time!) if we are ever fortunate enough to come back to the Big Island.

Aloha! I wanted to let you all know how wonderful it was to stay at Eco Hale with Kaeo and Karl! This was a wonderful little cabin tucked back in a quite corner of the beautiful island; Kaeo and Karl have outfitted the place with everything one would need for a comfortable stay. We were so pleased with the little touches; a cooler with ice for a beach day, flippers and snorkels, coffee, fresh fruit, pots and pans to cook......Even though we landed in the Hilo area during an EXTREMELY rainy spell, Eco Hale was warm and cozy. Thank you so much for this wonderful little home away from home!

This is a very unique, special place to stay. My husband and I were blown away by all of the fun little details that set this place apart from the others. The kitchen area was well stocked and there was a binder full of interesting information and recommendations. The bathroom is adjacent to the kitchen/bedroom space and is gorgeous. There was great hot water and water pressure in the shower. The location feels off the beaten path and remote but the directions to it are detailed and it’s easy to find. The rainforest setting is peaceful and private. Communication with Kaeo and Karl was relaxed and friendly. No complaints - we’d stay at the Eco Hale again in a heartbeat!

Cozy cabin nestled in what feels like your own personal rain forest! Centrally located for our hikes to the national park, the tide pools in Paola and dining in Hilo. Neat, clean, orderly with a fun outdoor cooking area. Kaeo and Karl are gracious and delightful hosts. You can't go wrong with this beautiful cabin.

Eco Hale is simply perfect: clean, cool, comfortable and loved. The attention to detail in the design of the space and all the equipment provided is remarkable. Seriously, I had absolutely everything I needed -- including things above and beyond like coffee, papaya, avocado, filtered water and chocolate. And there seems to be an invisible orchid fairy wandering around in the jungle who delivers fragrant and fresh-picked flowers every time you turn around for more than a second. Eco Hale is at a perfect location if you want to explore. Very easy access Volcano National Park. (I even hiked to see the lava from a point nearby -- amazing!). I also visited the hot ponds, the Portlandia-like little town of Pahoa, took yoga classes in Hilo, jaunted down to Kalani retreat center, saw the glowing crater late at night under a starlit sky, the Black Sand Beach, the Green Sand Beach and more... I thought about asking Kaeo and Karl if they would adopt me forever and ever, but all good things must come to an end. Don't worry about the rain, or the fact that you cannot walk to a white sand beach, or the lack of bars serving up Mai Thai in the immediate vicinity. None of these things are an obstacle. Come see what this luxurious little jungle cabin has in store for you.

This place is such a gem. My husband and I stayed here for our 2 year anniversary, we live in a noisy city and coming here, being able to fall asleep listening to crickets and frog was amazing. The bathroom is adorable and I loved taking showers, being able to see out of the floor to ceiling window into the rainforest. Having breakfast on the outdoor breakfast bar and coming home to random fruits placed there by our hosts was the best surprise. Kaeo and Karl are great hosts. Thank you so much for making our vacation even better. Love this place!

ideal stay for us. The place is in the middle of Volcano/Hilo/Puna, it was convenient for us to explore those areas. Kaeo was very gracious and the unit had all the necessary things for staying/outing. I would stay at her place again and again. Thank you much.

My wife Jenny and I had a lovely stay at Eco Hale. If you are looking for somewhere off the beaten path, this is the place for you. At night, it seems as if you are staying in the middle of a jungle rainforest (though with surprisingly few pests; in fact, I didn't even notice mosquitoes at night). The cottage was clean and smartly outfitted; the owners included everything you might want for your Big Island adventures (snorkel equipment, beach chairs and towels, ponchos and umbrellas, etc.); Kaeo and Karl were even nice enough to leave us fresh fruit, banana bread, and other treats. I would definitely recommend Eco Hale for travelers eager to escape the resort scene and glimpse a bit of life in inland Hawaii. That said, it's barely a 25 minute drive (if that) to the Volcano Park or Hilo, so you are never that far from major tourist destinations.

We really loved our little house in the jungle. Having breakfast on the veranda was great and we even got a lot of fruits and other food from our hosts. Kaeo and Karl gave us a very warm welcome and directly made us feel at home.

Excellent choice! Everything was perfect, very clean, quiet, unique accomodation. Ideal for visiting the volcano area. Host are more than friendly. When we arrive we had fruit, chocolates, bread...and even a bottle of wine. It is like a 5 stars little hotel.

What a great and unique deal! Secluded without feeling disconnected, privacy without inattention, eco-friendly with all the comforts of nice accommodations -- plus a lot of sweet (literally!) little extras here and there, ample complementary snacks and staple foods to tie-over in a pinch, not to mention delicious samplings of fresh local fruits & snacks to really make "downtime" in this wonderful garden-place a treat to savor, rain or shine. My travel buddy arrived several hours after me, entailing a long drive across the island at night to collect him; when Kaeo realized this, she immediately offered to prepare a plate of food for us so we could come straight back and relax. She was making what would prove a lovely roast chicken with ample sides. She asked about my friend's diet and I mentioned that he is pesco, but surely we'd do fine munching on whatever she was making. However, Kaeo insisted on cooking up a nice little Ahi steak, just for him! The welcome wagon from both Kaeo & Karl was warm indeed, beginning with enthusiastic and detailed arrival guidance a week before our stay, and they tended to our few needs while there seamlessly and with complete discretion -- we never saw either of them again during our stay until Kaeo dropped by the morning of our departure to send us on our way with a warm goodbye. Binders chock full of local interest and maps gave us everything we needed to make the most of our brief visit, and their lush and beautiful property was a constant feast for the senses, both inside and out. A very different kind of stay experience, with a quality that can't be judged in relation the usual lodging options, but a fully and beautifully conceived package all its own. While deeply immersed in the local situation -- running water is pumped from a catchment, power is solar and to be used moderately, and the free wifi provided is a mobile hotspot with a limited data plan -- everything is nicely done (all the lights work, hot water is great, purified drinking water is provided, and the internet is there whenever you need it) -- we wanted for nothing. This is no cabin in the woods but a thoroughly pleasant, modern, modest yet comfortable, fully-appointed abode with everything you need (food and cooking stuff, nice personal care & bathroom products, fun things you might need for day trips, etc), steeped in the slightly wild Puna and the sense of sharing in the good life that Kaeo & Karl have lovingly built and nurtured here. The booking and transaction couldn't have been smoother; all we had to do was leave HI sales tax in the envelope provided when we left.

We had an exceptional experience at Eco Hale! We were greeted by our friendly host who showed us to the hale and explained all of the amenities. She had packed the hale with fresh friut, goodies, and and all sorts of thoughtful extras. We had everything we needed to make ourselves at home. The pictures don't do this accommodation justice- it us even better in real life. The hale is set in lush tropical gardens. The finishings throughout are well crafted and creative- bamboo mouldings and lovely tilework. It has large windows and lots of light. It is also very clean and well cared for. During our stay we got a lot of rain, but it didnt hold us back from being able to enjoy the many fun things to do in the area which are all fairly close by: exploring the town if Hilo, trekking through Volcano National park, and doing tons of snorkelling. A huge bonus were the snorkel gear and boogie boards our hosts provided for us to use!! We would highly recommend Eco Hale to anyone looking for a peaceful and fun place to stay while on the big island. Our hosts were awesome. They gave us lots of privacy, while making us feel special and well cared for during our stay. We would definitely stay at Eco Hale again!

Kaeo is a wonderful host, she makes us feel at home. There was fresh fruits, home made bread and other good things to eat at are arrival. The little cabin is well equiped and very comfortable. It is a special experience to live in the rainforest where it rains all the time. At night the bugs and frogs are singing. The volcano parc and the city of Hilo is near. We like are experience. Thank you Kaeo and Karl.

I stayed at Eco Hale for four nights and loved it. I arrived around 7pm the first night while it was getting dark but the directions supplied by Kaeo were excellent and I easily made it there. Kaeo greeted me and showed me to the guesthouse and it is super cute. Private room with sink, microwave, refrigerator and a gas burner to cook. The bathroom is right next door, also private, with hot water and also is so nice. The decorations in the room and bathroom are really great and you can tell Kaeo and Karl have put a lot of time into making the Eco Hale feel like a home, and it does. Kaeo and Karl have provided all the necessary kitchen items for it to be a home, plates, cups, pots, pans, french press, fresh fruit, condiments, lots of snacks, everything you could need and more. Kaeo is also a fabulous cook and sweetly made me some baked goods and breakfast a few times while I was there. I really enjoyed talking with Kaeo, she and Karl have really created a wonderful life on the Big Island off the grid and super comfortable. Kaeo also has great knowledge of the area and great recommendations for hiking, snorkeling, etc. There are snorkels, boogie boards, cooler, beach chairs, books about hiking, birds, towels, anything you could think of really, available for use by guests. They have also prepared a huge binder of information about the area that I found extremely useful. The location is great, in between Kea'au and Volcano and it was a quick trip to beach/snorkeling and excellent hiking in Volcanos National Park. Their home is in a beautiful fern forest and there are lots of birds during the day and singing coqui frogs at night. Sleeping to the sounds of frogs is the best. Kaeo is easily reached by phone, text, or going to her house if you need. I can't recommend Eco Hale enough. I would love to live there myself!

Kaeo and Karl were wonderful hosts. The room is tucked away in the (Website hidden by Airbnb) was so peaceful listening to birds right outside the window--it was difficult to leave the room everyday! If you are lucky enough to try Kaeo's homebaked goods, they were delicious! We would definitely come back again next time we are on the Big Island.

We were greeted warmly by Kaeo late in the evening when we arrived at Eco Hale. The place is amazing! We have to say it is the best place we stayed in for our entire trip. There was so much complimentary food, we couldn't finish it all! The lodge is isolated from the road, surrounded by exotic (to us) plants and animals and although it is a small drive from Hilo - trust us, it is worth it! The bathroom facilities were even better than some other bnb places we stayed in. Although, because it's an eco lodge, the water needs to be pumped every so often and if you go to the toilet in the middle of the night - it will wake the neighbours! Overall we rate it 9/10. You fall asleep to soft rain and the sounds of melodic (though a local pest) frogs and wake up to fresh fruit for breakfast. What more could you possibly want?!

I was greeted warmly by Kaeo when I arrived. There was such a wide variety of complimentary and homemade treats from Kaeo that I felt staying there was such good value. Eco Hale is immaculately clean and the bathroom was one of the best I've ever stayed in. I liked how Eco Hale is isolated from the road, in a rural area, and out of the tourist area, yet a good point for exploring Puna and Volcano and Hilo. There is nothing I would change about my experience at Eco Hale other than I wish I had stayed a few days longer as it was relaxing and one of my best memories on the Big Island.

To choose EcoHale for our one week stay on the BigIsland was the best what we could have done. The EcoHale is as described, a beauty pearl in the nature. We had such a pleasant stay, waking up in the morning in a wonderful nature paradise and going to sleep with all the sounds of the garden was an extremely nice experience. Kaeo&Karl are so nice, they prepared everything perfectly and gave us so much threats. What else could we wish more. The property is very close to the main attractions of the island. It was the perfect spot to start exploring BigIsland and the perfect spot to rest and enjoy life. We are very thankful for having met Kaeo&Karl. Thank you very much.

I am very glad I had chosen Kaeo's and Karl's EcoHale for my last days on the Island. I was very warm welcomed and they showed me around. It is like you have your own little paradise. The love to details in the decoration made me feeling like home. The EcoHale was very clean and very thoughtful outfitted. It feels like you have a bit of luxury with all the decoration and the beautiful built bath room next door. They provided a lot of extra goodies, like fruits and homemade bread. There were also chairs, boogie boards, snorkel gear and towels you could take to the beach. I can highly recommend their place for adventurous travelers that want to relax away from the crowds and enjoy the rainforest with all its fragrances and the sound of birds and frogs and still being close to major tourist attractions. I am very grateful for this outstanding experience and if I make it back to this beautiful Island I will stay there again. Mahalo to Kaeo and Karl, I just loved the place.

We loved it! Very special place, relaxing and clean with all the basic amenities. The hosts are very friendly and welcoming. If we could, we would have stayed a few more nights. After three weeks in Hawaii, this place was one of our favorites.

Our time at Eco Hale was a highlight on our trip, and Kaeo was the most gracious and thoughtful host. We arrived after dark and she warmly welcomed us and walked us from our car along a fire-lit path to the beautiful cottage. She then brought us a tray of delicious hot food!! The next morning, finally able to explore the kitchen, sleeping area and gorgeous bathroom in full sunlight, we couldn't believe all of the careful details and amenities that Kaeo has placed throughout. Everything you could imagine needing or wanting away from home is there at your fingertips. Eco Hale, in Mountain View, is a tucked away location, but it was centrally located between three areas that we wanted to explore: Hilo, Puna area, and the Volcano National Park. The cottage is about a 20-30 minute drive from each of these spots. We are already talking about going back! This place is very special!

Kaeo and Karl were absolute gems! We had such a wonderful time at the Eco Hale that we didn't want to ever leave. From the fruit and fresh fish to the wine and honeymoon goodies, it was all so magical. We especially loved all the cute decorations and extra touches that made our stay so much more personal. The "kokee" frogs were also so fun to listen to at night and Kaeo and Karl were the most fantastic of hosts. Thank you!

Kaeo could not have been more friendly, kind or generous. She gave both my wife and I a warm hug on our arrival and greeted us in Hawaiian. Other kindnesses included: a greeting with our names on it written on a board with different colors of chalk, giving us a bottle of wine and a hand written poem for our 25th wedding anniversary, providing a breakfast of fish and poi on our final morning. The cabin is incredible. It is private and surrounded by beautiful gardens. We went to sleep at night to the sounds of frogs and woke up to a beautiful sunrise every day. Highly recommend that you stay here.

What a neat place. Elevated to greatness by Kaeo an incredible hostess. The area around the hale looks like someone set off a plant bomb and the world exploded into infinite shades of green. We arrived to Kaeo's open armed welcome and were enfolded into the Hale's womb. All fun aside... It is obvious that Kaeo and Karl have put a lot of thought into the place. With all kinds of things supplied for your enjoyment. You aren't just renting a room you are learning the spirit of aloha from the lovely Kaeo!

Kaeo and Karl, Thank you for hosting us at Eco Hale last week. We had an amazing time and felt just at home. We wish to go back soon, and stay at Eco Hale again. Kaeo, you are extremely generous. Your hospitality, the numerous details, treats, and the special you decorated and maintain Eco Hale is an inspiration. Thank you for the amazing guide book (binder); we found it very useful. We enjoyed having beach gear to enjoy around the island, as well as the well equipped kitchen for our dinners at night. We will miss the sound of the frogs and the relaxing rain. MAHALO!! What an oasis! We loved our stay at Eco Hale. One can tell how much love has been put onto making Eco Hale the perfect getaway for travellers from near and far. Set in the middle of Kaeo and Karl's beautiful and extensive garden that felt like being in the middle of a tropical paradise. Kaeo was there to welcome us warmly and show us around. There were useful instructions in the room as well. What makes Eco Hale even more special are the personal touches. The beautiful welcome sign, the homemade quiche, bagels and soft drinks in the fridge, a bottle of wine from the region, beautiful fruit from the Garden, tea, coffee, creamer, cookies, nuts, herbs and spices… the list could go on. The toiletries in the bathroom were also lovely. To lie there at night listening to the rain and the sounds of the night was just something else. In fact we so enjoyed being in our little oasis that we spent more time there and less time racing around every single site Big Island has to offer. Instead we ticked off our must dos but left off our if we have time list as we found peace and tranquility at Eco Hale. I would highly recommend anyone spending time in Hilo and Volcano area of the island to stay with Kaeo and Karl at Eco Hale.

Eco Hale embodies the spirit of "E komo mai, nou ka hale" or "welcome, my house is yours." The reviews are glowing and well deserved, but Eco Hale is the kind of place that you really need to experience to understand. Eco Hale was built in a rain forest paradise. This place is the real deal. If you spend your entire vacation at a resort you will miss the authenticity and aloha that Kaeo and Karl give. We enjoyed four beautiful nights here. Each night we kept the windows wide open. The sweet scent of flowers poured in on the cool moist air. Rain kept the rhythm while coqui frogs sang their little hearts out. Controversial as they are, I now know why Puerto Ricans love the coqui. Hear them in a soft rain, in the cool of evening with the lights down low, and you may believe the legends. Eco Hale sits well off the beaten path and is accessed through a network of quiet two lane roads. The hale is warm and comfortable. The surrounding garden is Eden like. Inside and out, the host's attention to detail is remarkable. Eco Hale is a place to appreciate and return to. Malama pono, a hui hou!

Kaeo and Karl were the perfect hosts! They gave us detailed instructions on how to find their place with a photo of the gate which led us there with no problems. On arrival we found home made quiche, cookies, banana bread and fresh fruit waiting for us, which which was very unexpected but oh so nice. From the moment we arrived we felt like we were home! The eco hale was everything they had advertised or as and more! Their gardens were amazing, and it is on a perfect location to explore Volcano National Park, Puna district and only 20 miles from Hilo. We went to the supermarket and made all our own food but if you wanted to eat out there are restaurants at the nearby Volcano Village and also just down the highway toward Hilo. Overall we had a great stay and would definitely come back again. I recommend anyone to stay here! Thank you Kaeo and Karl your Hawaiian hospitality was above and beyond! :)

This is the perfect idyll in the rainforest, surrounded by the sounds of nature and beautiful plants. It's an 30 min drive to volcano national park or to Hilo, so there's a lot to see. Our time there was way too short! The house just lovely and fully furnished, you can just find anything you could wish for and a lot more. Kaeo and Karl are perfect hosts, they greeted us warmly and provided us with lots of fruits and cake. There's also a big map with personal notes what to see and do around there. We would love to come again!!

This is such a hidden gem! With clear driving instructions we found the cute Eco Hale in no time! Thanks so much for making this Eco Hale a home away from home Kaeo and Karl! It is so fully equipped including all cooking essentials, teas and coffee (premium!), cakes, snacks and drinks (enough for 2 day hikes for two people!), towels, rain gear for hikers, change of pants (both male and female sizes), tops, all sort of snorkeling gears, boogie boards, beach chairs, etc etc, even fresh fruits from the rain forest in the backyard! Sitting at the steps, sipping teas while listening to the birds and frogs at night with the tiki torch on was something unforgettable. The bed is just COMFY! Kaeo and Karl has been so generous, they offered to dry our towels using their dryer when it was raining and invited us to a lovely Thanksgiving dinner! The stay at Eco hale was the highlight of our Hawaiian trip. Kaeo knows the island so well and has given us great tips on where to go and what to do. We were so happy to see some green sea turtles on our last day at the black sand beach, thanks to Kaeo! We strongly recommend Eco Hale to anyone who is about to visit the big island. You will LOVE the unique experience! Great location especially for volcano hikers! Would definitely come back when we visit the big island again!

Eco hale was everything that we were looking for- a rainforest getaway that is private and remote, but still in close proximity to Volcano and other sights that we were interested in Puna. The location was perfect for exploring the east side of the island and we thought the east side had lots to offer if you are looking for adventures on the big island. Kaeo and Karol were gracious hosts who made us feel welcomed and right at home. They thought of everything for you so you can just relax and enjoy your tropical rainforest escape. The extra treats are a big cherry on top that shows that they really go above and beyond to create a unique experience for their guests.

Kaeo is a born host, a warm and welcoming person who wants to nurture and feed (!) her guests. She knows that her Eco Hale is an unusual place that attracts people who want a different experience of the Big Island. This is our second trip to the island, and we opted for airbnb hosts instead of the resort experience, precisely because we wanted contact with real people and their lives. We got this here - just the right amount. Kaeo and Karl were present but never invasive; always helpful and sweet. Kaeo also cooked an amazing meal for us - seared ahi on salad, perhaps the best dinner we have had on the island. We started off a 2-week trip by decompressing off-grid here. We’d say this was just the right amount of time to get a taste of this lifestyle. The home is exactly as pictured, with perhaps more luxuries than you’d imagine - plenty of soft towels, well equipped mini kitchen, and even warm fleeces and pants if you didn’t pack your own. The bathroom is accessed by the lanai, something that’s hard to understand from the photos, adding a fun novelty to the experience. We loved the comfort of being inside, sheltered from but living with millions of birds, abundant plants, and the sound of rain. Their rainforest garden is the real thing, and we enjoyed the novelty of juicing a few citruses directly from the trees.

Arriving at Eco Hale was like arriving home! It is clear that a lot of love and thought went into the design and implementation of the hale and property, from the lovely little kitchen to the gorgeous bathroom, the lanai and the beautiful forest garden. It was quiet and private, very cozy and clean. Kaeo was an amazing hostess- she accommodated our schedule, left us sweet honeymoon treats including fresh fruit, a bottle of wine, sweet breads, and all kinds of little goodies. A bonus- there are binders of amazing information about the area that Kaeo and Karl have put together over the years- it really helps to put your stay on the island in perspective. Staying at Eco Hale is perfect for exploring the southern part of the island, including Hilo, Pahoa, the amazing Volcanos National Park, etc. Mahalo nui loa for your kind hospitality!

We had such a nice time at Eco Hale! Everything was really clean. Kaeo was there when we just got at the house and she showed us everything around. What a splendid few days at Eco Hale. The property is situated on the same plot as the owners Kaeo and Karl. It has two rooms - a compact and cosy bedroom and kitchenette and a separate bathroom with shower and toilet reached by a covered porch. The whole property is a treasure trove of items collected and useful to enhance the stay. We loved the isolation and enjoyed laying in bed listening to the noises of frogs and other jungle creatures at night. If all this was not good enough, then you get the hospitality from Kaeo. Among many other things there was a lasagna waiting for us in the fridge and a short time later Kaeo reappears with a plate of yummy Sushi. There were all sorts of kitchen herbs and spices, coffee, teas - well the list goes on for ever. a huge bowl of oranges was left ready encouraging a morning ritual of squeezing for juice. Kano herself was a mind of information about sights and the local area and had a wicked sense of humour. Thank you very much for making our stay a most enjoyable one.

A great place to do the most important part of a vacation - relax. A nice blend of natural and simple, but at the same time very comfortable and clean. There has clearly been a lot of thought in the design and layout of the building, grounds, furnishings and decorations which all make for a very pleasant stay. The building is situated such that the main house is largely obscured, and yet there are views all around of the rain forest. This was our base for exploring volcanoes park and the Hilo area, but we had trouble leaving before noon because we were so comfortable enjoying our lazy mornings at Eco Hale. We also enjoyed Kaeo's hospitality from all the fruits and rum raisin breads waiting inside to the veggie lasagna our first night, and advice on local sightseeing. The bed was very comfortable, other than a few tree frogs (which I found rather pleasant) it was very quiet which made for a great sleep. They have also equipped the room with all sorts of items for both cooking while you are there (pots and pans and utensils as well as spices, sauces, etc.), as well as enjoying activities in the area (snorkels, masks, fins, beach chairs, rainjackets, flashlights, beach towels). they have really put a lot of thought and effort into making it a very warm and comfortable place to enjoy. We look forward to a return trip.

We had a great time staying at the Eco Hale. It is conveniently located close to Volcano, but a bit far from Hilo and the beach areas. The drive off the main road over to the property is somewhat intimidating at first. However, waking up to the lush rainforest surrounding the Eco Hale makes the extra miles well worth it. The Hale was spotless, very comfortable and had everything we needed. It is located separately from the main house on the property, with it's own driveway; making it feel like a private cottage (loved that!). Kaeo was a formidable host and had many little touches that made our stay memorable. It is easy to see that she and Karl put a lot of heart building the Hale and making it so unique. Thanks again for everything!

My husband and I enjoyed our stay. The night sounds of birds and crickets combined with the morning little lizards on the trees outside greeting us made a peaceful vacation. Excellent location if you want to spend the day at the Volcano National Park (20 min)-try the Iki trail or visit nearby Hilo-45 min away. Hilo has the rainbow falls, small beach parks with great snorkeling (we saw 7 sea turtles). The location is about 2 hours to Kona and the west coast--the built up resort side with the restaurants and coffee plantations- so think about where want to spend time most on the island. From the moment we arrived, Kaeo made us feel welcome. There were all sorts of treats, fruits and drinks waiting. Even oranges for fresh squeezed oj and fresh baked yummy bread. The place is small but Eco friendly and well done for space, especially the bamboo and window bathroom area--note the bathroom is separate from room (via the porch/lanai). The hosts were so responsive-we had an issue with the shower and Karl fixed it right away. There are kitchen supplies for cooking on the outdoor gas burner, a small fridge, coffee maker and French press. They also have beach chairs, beach towels, snorkel gear, flashlights and other items that are helpful. All in all a nice place and wonderful hosts!

Kaeo greeted us when we arrived and showed us around the Eco Hale, making sure that we felt comfortable and knew where everything was. The tiny house was furnished with lots of supplies for cooking, extra bedding and warm clothes, lots of books about Hawai'i, and plenty of gear for the beach. There were also binders of information about the Hilo/Puna area. Since we had traveled from Seattle, we found all of this stuff really helpful! Kaeo had also left fresh fruit and snacks for us in the kitchen as well as flowers in the bathroom. Our evenings in the rainforest were super-relaxing -- a perfect counterbalance to our days snorkeling, hiking, and swimming. We had lots of privacy, but also we knew Kaeo and Karl were close by in case we needed anything. By then end of our week's stay, we felt really spoiled, in fact! They made our trip to Hawai'i extra special' and we're already looking forward to our next stay at the Eco Hale.

Kaeo and Karl are the best hosts one can imagine! There are so many lovely details like fruits and cookies and even a welcoming board with our names on. All you need is provided in the small bamboo house, and the bathroom is so cozy with it's big glass wall through which you seel the rainforest garden. The place is very far from the mainroad so one just hears the birds and coquis in the night. And the rainforest garden is really very beautiful. Kaeo sent a very understandable description of the way in advance so we didn't have any problem to find the location. I really can recommend the place when you like to have it quiet and closed to nature. A great experience. Thank you both for all!!

If you want an authentic Hawaiian experience, and to feel the true meaning of “Aloha”, look no further. Make your plans to enjoy time at this sweet rainforest retreat aka: Eco Hale. Like so many others who’ve attested to the sincere hospitality shown by hosts Kaeo and Karl, I fully concur. It was exemplary. (You can trust these reviews!) They give you everything you need, including your privacy. And so easy to work with, flexible and accommodating. Having said this, listen up: this place is not for everyone! It is very unique and best suited to intrepid and savvy travelers. This is not a Hilton/ Disneyland version of Hawaii. There is no room service, or ice, but there is good wifi! It’s situated in dense tropical rainforest which is what I loved about it BEST! Think: remote, private, rain, sunshine, more rain, birdsong, rain, sunshine. Quiet. Comfortable. Ah, bliss! (Rain is considered a blessing in Hawaii, it is beautiful to hear and see, smell and feel. But no worries, you tan-seeking sun-worshipers, the sunshine makes a strong presence known as well... they take turns. If your dream is to experience Hawaii - the “real” Hawaii - rest assured, you will find it at Eco Hale. Go ready to slow down and enjoy paradise.

What an awesome stay! My husband and I desperately needed a vacation and Kaeo & Karl's hale in the rainforest was absolutely superb. We were lulled to sleep by the coqui frogs every night, stuffed full of incredible food and fruit, and felt completely pampered by our hosts. It was indeed very private, very comfortable, and very clean. They had absolutely everything you would need for fun on the island: a cooler for picnics, boogie boards, snorkeling gear, beach towels, sunscreen, recommendations for places to see and things to eat -- all of it. They had plenty of coffee, snacks, and fruit to get us through most of our meals (I'm still full, oof!) They managed to be delightful hosts, but gave us plenty of privacy. We communicated by leaving notes on the outside table (where they refill the water jug and take away your compost). They often left fresh flowers when we were out - it was lovely! The icing on the cake was when they did a load of our laundry for free halfway through our stay (It was desperately needed!). You won't go wrong staying at this wonderful place!

We were immersed in a Hawaiian rain Forrest, cozy in our cottage. Besides a spacious bathroom, the cottage had a comfortable bed, small refrigerator, some delicious food and local fruit awaiting us and on a covered porch a delightful camp stove on which I cooked breakfast each morning. Kaeo and Karl were friendly, very helpful and accommodating, stocking the cottage with everything one could need including binoculars that I had forgotten. We would gladly come again.

This place is just magic. It is quite an adventure to get there but once you arrive in this beautiful garden you will just love it. As it was my first airbnb experience I was very excited. But everything was just perfect. Kaeo was super friendly and gave me a great and warm welcome. She had great advice for what is there to do. I got a very delicious dinner at the first evening. And thanks for all the fruit! Everything you need is in that beautiful house, even a rainjacket !!! :) actually I forgot mine on Oahu so I was pretty happy for that one. I suppose Kaeo and Karl put so much love in this house - you definetely will feel that everywhere! The bathroom is just great and very clean! You have plenty of privacy and if you get to catch Kaeo you have some nice chats! (I didn't get to know Karl but I am sure he is just as lovely as Kaeo is) I had a really wonderful time there and enjoyed the dark nights with a lot of birds :-) Mahalo for this unique experience which I will always keep in my heart! So special! Eco Hale is perfect. Kaeo and Karl are fantastic hosts and very loving. Kaeo made us dinner the first night which was fabulous and also left us some treats which were fabulous. She didn't know this, but our anniversary was on the 18th and she brought us a big piece of chocolate cake. It made me so happy and we felt spoiled. The house is super clean and I just loved everything about it. The natural soundtrack of the birds, frogs and rain are so soothing. We utilized the kitchen for 4 meals and they had everything we needed as far as cookware, dishes, salt, pepper, etc. The gas on the burner ran out and they were so quick to replace it for us. Literally the most loving/giving people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. They left us with fruit as well and there is a cool tree house that we ate dessert on one of the nights. Its just very peaceful and great to see that part of the island. The location is about 20 minutes to Hilo and 20 minutes to the Volcano park. Kaeo and Karl, thank you so much for the hospitality!! We will be recommending to all our friends that come for a visit.

Kaeo We just loved staying here. We only met Kaeo during our stay and she is an incredibly welcoming, mindful and warm hearted person - she made us feel home from the moment we arrived. Actually the whole communication has been super smooth and easy too. We got a detailed description about the way and Kaeo was there to show us around when we arrived. What can I say, everything was provided in a very special and cute way! The cabin has the cozy bedroom with a very comfortable bed and a kitchensink. There is space to store some luggage and food too, but you will find almost everything there to use too. Kaeo stocked the fridge with some goodies and fruits - we enjoyed so much. Next door, connected by the open air veranda and cooking-bar, there is the very special bathroom. The glass to the jungle is so great, kind of jungle shower-feeling! The bathroom is so clean!! As the whole cabin is. It was the 49th acommendation we stayed in, during our round the world trip and it has honesty been the most clean and most spiritual one. Everything is there- clean linen, good towels, quality toiletries, complimentary food items, the "good night chocolate", fresh fruits, drinking water, Big Island Information, a meditation place with a yoga mat, bodyboards, snorkeling gear, nice dishes and cooking items, great and fast gas cooking plate ... The place is laid back, super calm and quite far away from everything. We loved the crickets chirping and jungle sounds during the night. Hilo is about 30-40 minutes to go, and there are some great organic food stores and a farmers market. The wifi is slow and limited and I haven't been prepared there will be an additional tax to pay due to departure when we booked. It was mentioned at least in the confirmation, but I just haven't seen it. It can be very cold up there near Mountain View too. Kaeo and Karl were very welcoming with our Little One too. The cabin is small but nevertheless they arranged her a cute and cozy mattress and provided a lovely book! The energy there is lovely and inspiring. This place is just a gem and ideal for some relaxed time, hiking the volcano and enjoy open air cooking with a view. We all can highly recommend this pristine place - it is full of love and flow. Thank you, dear Kaeo and dear Karl!

We absolutely loved it here! Kaeo is the most delightful hostess! She made us feel so welcome and cared for, the "best host award" is well deserved. This gorgeously hand-crafted bamboo home is very clean, supplied with snacks, beach gear, warm clothing (for those cold volcano viewing nights) and anything else you could possibly need for your stay. The one acre yard is full of trees, plants, flowers and cute Coqui frogs. We wished we could have stayed here longer and would come back in a heartbeat!

A perfect location to go for hikes to the volcano nationalpark! Its a realy beautiful decorated and clean Room/Bathroom in the middle of a Rainforest (looks- and sonds like Rainforest) just beautiful!!! Dont wait and book it now! Kaeo came outside and showed us all things about the place...how to park, how to close the gate...she was very helpful. We didnt talk much about what things we can do in this area, but there are many recomanded things which you can find in a book. Thank you again for this little paradise, the sweets, the lemonade and all the small welcome-signs!!

My wife and I enjoyed our stay emensly. The accommodations were as described, clean and very comfortable. Kaeo and Karl were wondeful hosts. Freshly made breads and fruits were provided at check in for our stay and they were delicious. They provided attentive service while at the same time giving us privacy. They even baked a birthday cake for my wife's birthday. The separate cottage style room was set in their lush, tropical rainforest property. Very peaceful and quiet. The nightly rain and coqui frogs made sleeping great. When/if we return to the big island, Kaeo and Karl's Eco Hale will be our accommodations on the Hilo side of the island for sure.

Had an amazing time at the "Eco-hale"! Karl and Kaeo were lovely hosts - very welcoming and full of knowledge about the local area. The hale is beautifully presented and very comfortable for 2. Everything has been thought of - snorkelling gear and boogie boards, plenty of things to cook on, umbrellas, beach towels, torches... I could do on. Kaeo had also stocked up on all the essentials for us (like salt, oil, condiments etc) as well as provided home baking and fruit for us! We felt so looked after. Location is abit out of the way - which means it's very quiet but also abit of a drive to get anywhere but the place more than makes up for it. Our best Airbnb stay so far :)

PAMPERED AND PRIVATE! Kaeo and Karl are the quintessential hosts - with fresh fruit, home made treats and lots of Aloha spirit. We spent four days basking in the tastefully decorated ohana enjoying cool mists, lush rain forest sights and sounds after beaching and hiking. Unbeatable choice.

If you plan a trip to the big island and see this listing, do not think twice about booking this place! Dan and I have been to a lot of airbnb places, and we have never received such a warm welcome and stayed in such a special place surrounded by nature. The hut is very clean and super comfy, so is the bed. Kaeo had provided us with fruits (papaya, avocado, lemons etc.), the most amazing home made banana/macademia/apple bread, a freshly made salad and pie, yoghurts etc. The kitchen is also fully equipped to cook (pans, pots and all you need to cook with). The bathroom is really nice, it must have been newly renovated. During the 3 days we were there, we had full privacy. As to the location, it was perfect for us. It is only a 25-30min drive to volcano's national park, so you could go there every night if you wanted, and it takes about the same time to get to Hilo. This place is definitely a jackpot! Thank you again, Kaeo for sharing this wonderful place with us.

Our 3 nights in Eco Hale were so peaceful we didn't wanna leave. To feel asleep with the sounds of nature has no price. Kaeo is so welcoming. Thank you for all your treats and advices. You represent the aloha spirit. We felt at home ... We'll definitely come back. Mahalo ! Merci

Staying at eco hale was an amazing experience for me and my sister. Though we did not get the chance to meet Karl, Kaeo was so sweet and friendly, making sure we were extra comfortable. I asked her for nail clippers in a note, and she not only left me clippers, but also nail polish and other nail products! From the special tea they provided (in my profile I mentioned I enjoy drinking tea) to the cute decorated chalk signs welcoming us, Karl and Kaeo are all about the thoughtful details that make you so glad you stayed. The place itself is very neat and tidy, with a larger bathroom than expected. Coming into this, we knew it was a bit more remote, so we were fine with the limited wifi and no air conditioning. The area around the place is like a tropical paradise, and there's a little wooden platform in a tree that is great to sit and enjoy a beer on. We were very happy with our stay there and highly recommend to those who want a nice getaway into the beautiful Hawaiin scenery.

From the moment I set foot in the property, Kaeo immediately welcomed me with a warm smile and fresh flowers. The property is beautiful with all the lush greenery and flowers. I fell in love with the place as soon as I saw it - it was clean and I had everything I needed and more. I was delighted to find a delicious ravioli dinner in the fridge waiting to be heated and after Kaeo showed me around and told me where everything was, she came back with a delicious salad. I also had a giant tray of fresh fruits that lasted my entire stay plus tasty cookies and pastries. I loved hearing the sounds of the rainforest and the home had everything I needed for my stay - beach chairs, snorkel gear, boogie boards, beach towels, sunscreen, water and a cooler. Kaeo and Karl made me feel like ohana and I felt very safe and comfortable right away. It really feels like a home away from home. The neighborhood is great and the directions were perfect - I didn't get lost or turned around at all. It is located very close to the volcano and to Hilo - very convenient. Also, K & K happily answered any questions I had and provided recommendations on places to go and eat. I had a memorable stay and as far as people go, you can't get any better than Kaeo and Karl. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Kaeo met me out by the gate, and welcomed me with open arms. She cooked me a homemade fish taco dinner the first night, and also left homemade cookies and bread, not to mention fresh fruit. Their property is amazing - quiet and lush. The Eco Hale was well appointed with anything a person traveling could need. Bed was comfortable and clean, bathroom was beautiful and clean as well. Would definitely stay here again! Thank you both so much!

Our stay at Eco Hale was wonderful. Very close to the Volcano National Park. 30 min tops. Since we were so close we were able to go back twice and stayed in the park later. Had we been in Hilo or further, we may not have and really missed out. The accommodations are exactly as described. It is unusually warm all over Hawaii so be ready for that at night. Thank you Kaeo for your attention to detail! I was thoroughly impressed by it!

I had such a great experience at Eco Hale! The location was perfect for exploring both Hilo and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Thank you so much Kaeo!

We loved our time at Eco Hale! Wish we could have stayed longer. Kaeo met us as soon as we arrived and immediately made us feel welcome. The place is so cute and cozy. We loved the way it was decorated and it had everything we needed. Although small, the bedroom does include a fridge, sink, coffee maker, french press, kitchen dishes, utensils, etc. Outside on the patio is a propane burner to be able to do some simple cooking. The fruit and sweet breads provided were delicious! The bed was sooo comfortable and we loved listening to the rain and/or frogs at night. The view into the beautiful gardens from the bathroom was amazing. When we arrived back to the hale after a long day there were motion sensor lights to lead us to our door. We thought that was a thoughtful touch. We didn't get to meet Karl but enjoyed talking with Kaeo about living in Hawaii. She was generous with her time!

There are no words to describe the amazing hospitality and kindness Kaeo and Karl showed my wife and I for the 5 nights we stayed on the Big Island. The location is amazing if you are wanting to see the Volcano National Park, there is a Black Sand beach very close in Kalapana about 20 mins away from Eco Hale. The house is very cozy and romantic but definitely only able to comfortably accommodate two at the maximum. Also if you are wanting a resort experience free of culture, a little dirt, and nature you might as well stay in Kona. The Hale is truly off the grid and we couldn't have been happier with it. Being off the grid doesn't mean roughing it though. If you use the (provided) citronella candles on the porch bugs aren't an issue. The hot water is instantly hot, and a full kitchen setup is provided albeit a little unconventional. The hospitality provided for us was unlike anything you could ever dream of at any resort however. Kaeo provided us some treats and sandwiches upon checkin after getting in late and made us feel right at home, even offering to share some tasty Lasagna she had made for herself! We had a little bad luck with the weather pattern as it rained nearly everyday but Kaeo was there to take care of us and made sure we had clean and dry towels. Between the home cooked meals, homemade cookies, homemade bread, and fresh fruit, Kaeo was always there for advice on what to see, tips on the grocery stores nearby, farmers markets, etc, etc. We really did feel like family and cannot wait til our next visit to the Big Island! - John and Carrie

Gorgeous little guest house. Great hosts who suprised us with little things and h ome made food. We definitely recommend this. A truely fanstastic experience to sleep in the rain forest next to the volcano. Loved it.

We had a fantastic time. Kaeo and Karl were wonderful hosts. They were happy to help when we needed something, but they respected our privacy. They gave us some great tips about nearby spots to check out. For breakfast, they set aside fresh fruit right from the trees outside, plus some treats like cookies, coffee cake, and chocolates. We felt very welcomed. About 5 miles from the main road, the Eco Hale was really the best of both worlds: it was rustic and away from it all, but it still had comforts like hot showers and a mini fridge. The property is just gorgeous, with all sorts of fruit trees and tropical plants around. Being city dwellers, it all felt a little magical.

Staying at the Eco Hale was hands down the most amazing Airbnb experience we ever had. When we arrived, we got an exceptionally warm, hearty, and savory welcome from Kaeo. During our stay, we kept communicating with Kaeo & Karl via little text messages - so we were always eager to come back in the evening and find a kind little note on the porch. The Hale is beautifully located in the middle of the rain forest, yet provides everything that you might ask for. We listened to the sound of the rain and the Coqui frogs at night and were woken up by the first rays of the sun piercing the canopy in the morning. What an enchanting and pristine place and what a great way to spend a vacation! Our stay at the Eco Hale was truly inspiring and we'll definitely be back should our travels ever lead us back to the Big Island of Hawai'i. Thanks so much, Kaeo & Karl!

We spent three days just trying to find all of the thoughtful ways Kaeo and Karl had tried to make our stay special. From dinner the first night, to fruit on the counter, to the well-built and maintained property we were well cared for in every way. The notebooks of information were jam packed. This place is a ways off the highway but is so private that it makes you feel like you alone on the island. We loved it.

This truly was the greatest place we've stayed at! The most beautiful surroundings and Kaeo & Karl were great hosts. They offered the most attention to detail I've ever seen, varying from their collection of notes featuring personal recommendations in the wider area to providing fruit/snacks and lots of hidden quirks! Would definitely recommend.

Nice cottage in Volcano (20 minutes from the national park). Somewhat remote. Kaeo welcomed us well with fresh home-made banana bread and showed us our space. We stayed for 2 days and our experience was somewhat mixed. Be sure not to use GPS to get here since the roads are not paved - Kaeo will remind you of her detailed notes and instructions she provides (which is somewhat hard to follow without a map). While we enjoyed staying in the cabin, it's not everyone's cup of tea since its rather remote and rustic. The cabin is stocked with fruits and breakfast items - a nice surprise. Our interaction with Kaeo was mixed - sometimes friendly and welcoming and other times quite abrasive which made us feel very uncomfortable on more than one occasion. Overall, we probably wouldn't stay here again.

Un petit paradis sur terre !!! Perdu dans la nature, cette chambre est un sanctuaire de la tranquillité. Nous n'avons pas vu Karl mais Kaeo est d'une gentillesse peu commune... Bref un super moment.

We arrived at Kaeo and Karl cottage under a stormy rain after driving the whole afternoon from Kona. It was so dark that we barely could see the car in front of us. It was hard to see the streets and landmarks Kaeo sent on the very detailed directions weeks in advance. So I recommend arriving when there is light. Kaeo was the most amazing hostess. Her first question was if we had dinner and since we said no, she immediately said there was quiche on the fridge and brought us a delicious salad. We had a great dinner inside the cozy cottage. The cottage is very comfortable with a queen size bed, four pilows and lots of covers for the chilly nights. The kitchen is full equipped and the bathroom very spacious - it is a separate room, so you need to go outside and enter the next door. The water is hot and the shower has good pressure. The cottage is totally isolated with a private lanai and garden full of beautiful plants and flowers. The famous banana bread was on the fridge and it was yummy! Next day we got fruit muffins, also yummy. You have to have in mind that you are in the middle of tropical rain forest with the next "town" (Volcano village) 30 minutes away. So come with all your adventurous spirit. It was a great experience and Kaeo is really one of the best hostess ever. She thought of every single detail and demonstrated really care for her guests. Mahalo Kaeo!!

Kaeo and Karl were truly Super Hosts! They go above and beyond to make you feel right at home. This was our (my husband and I) first time traveling together and it was very special and I thank Kaeo, Karl, and their charming little place for making it special. We even took our wedding pictures in their topical garden. The tropical garden is beautiful and full of tasty fruits! Kaeo even baked us a banana papaya bread (using ingredients straight from the garden) and it was hands down the BEST banana bread I've ever had! Eco Hale is located in a beautiful rainforest part of the Hawaii and it was a relaxing trip. Coming from a big loud fast paced city the sound of the rain, birds, and animals was just peaceful! We slept with the windows open during our 7 day trip and it was the best sleep I've had in awhile. We really liked that the place is eco friendly. I really recommend this place if you enjoy nature and trying to escape the city life. Its perfect to unwind and be free.

Eco Hale in rainforest was one our favorite places to stay. They thought of everything and made us feel very welcome. Kaeo surprises that were left for us each day we stayed were very nice starting with the quiche on our first night to the cookies on our last day. The area surrounding the Eco Hale was extremely beautiful. Would definitely stay here again when we return to Hawaii. Kaeo was very nice and made us feel right at home. Eco Hale was very neat and clean as well as organized (like I said they thought of everything we would need).

Dear Kaeo and Karl, Thank you so much for sharing a piece of paradise in the rain forest! Coming from the drought in California it felt so good to smell and feel and tear to rain! Surrounded by juicy green, flowers and birds we relax in your oh so cozy Ecohale. You are doing a wonderful job in creating this peaceful and beautiful place. We appreciate your hospitality and Drew are some surprises! Thank you so much for your treats and the beautiful gift. We love it! If you are looking for a short sojourn in paradise then head for the ecohale. Many thanks to hosts kaeo and Karl; mahalo!

After spending our time in the last weeks on Oahu, Kauai and Maui we came to Big Island and the Eco Hale Lodge. Especially after sleeping the last weeks in more"colder" apartements the Eco Hale felt wonderful. The place is as discrebed very private and fully equipped with everthing what is thinkable. The bed is really comfortable. Everthing is clean and in a very good condition. From our perspective it is the perfect place to stay on Big Island. We would like to thank you for all the complimentarys and hospitality. It was overall a 100% perfect time and stay for us.

Kaeo and Karl's presence on Airbnb goes beyond a simple vacation listing. The space itself is lovely: simple and well-appointed, with everything you need and more, while the surrounding property makes you hesitant to ever leave. No, it's the extras that make it special. We were greeted with a lovely home-cooked meal, in addition to more fresh fruit and snacks than we could possibly eat. There was equipment for snorkeling and exploring the beaches made available free of charge. And we kept finding little surprises, from the hand-lettered welcome sign to the tree house toward the back of the property to the pages and pages of suggestions on what to do in the area. Most Airbnb listings are for a place to spend the night. Kaeo and Karl share pieces of themselves and their lives, while offering you all the privacy you need. This was truly the most memorable experience we've had in 3 years of using Airbnb.

We just got back from a 2 wk vacation on the Big Island and Eco Hale was our favorite Airbnb experience. I had worried it would be too small or remote but for us it was the perfect Hawaiian experience. Kaeo met us in the drive as if we were old friends coming to visit. We had communicated by text the day before about our expected arrival time and need to go grocery shopping. As noticed in other reviews she promised us some vegetable pasta upon arrival saving us a trip from Volcano Village back to Hilo for supplies and allowing for more time to explore the National Park. The grounds around Eco Hale are lush with flora and fauna plus quaint garden art. We could tell much thought was put into the decor of the Hale, food & drink treats, and general household items and beach gear available for our use. It was like staying in a Hawaiian playhouse. We made much use of cooking equipment at night on our little porch after shopping at local Farmers Markets. The above pasta was delish as was fresh banana bread left on the kitchen counter. Garden fruits and other food staples were available in the frig and pantry. The bathroom was large and there was plenty of hot water and drinking water available. My husband and I are types who when on vacation are up and out early, back just before dark, and tired from our long day so Eco Hale could not have been a better choice for us. The location is perfect for exploring the HA Natl Volcano Park and the entire Puna area. We particularly loved the night sounds, sort of jungle-like. Wish we had booked more nights at Eco Hale for there is much Aloha there.

Kaeo and Karl's Eco Hale cabin was a wonderful little paradise in a lush Hawaiian rainforest/garden environment. We wish we could have stayed longer. We kept in touch with Kaeo and Karl to let them know our flight arrival was a bit late and they were OK with letting us come on ahead. We arrived after dark and had no problem finding the gate. If you follow Kaeo's directions exactly and keep an eye out for the numbers on the street pavement as indicated, you won't have any trouble. We felt welcome as soon as we arrived as Kaeo promptly and graciously introduced herself and handed us a piping hot tureen of delicious vegetable and soba noodle soup, which we devoured. Kaeo got us all set up with keys and additional information and left us to our own devices. We sadly didn't meet Karl as he had family in town. Upon entering the cabin, we were also pleased to find a selection of home-grown and local fruits on the counter that was more than we could eat...but we tried! Kaeo also brought us a loaf of home baked banana bread (delicious with coffee and fruit in the morning) and cookies for us (which saved us on one of our long hikes in the park). The cabin information and photos that were provided in the listing were accurate, so we knew what to expect. The main room in the cabin is a fairly small space, which we expected, but was large enough for both my husband and I to move around, prepare meals, eat, read and sleep. Eco Hale is perfect for a single or couple. It was very clean, cozy and comfortable. The kitchenette area is well set up for making your own meals by outdoor gas single cook-top, or indoor microwave, a bar-sized sink, and a small fridge. There were plenty of kitchen tools, plates, pans, coffee grinder, french press, as well as condiments, coffee beans, teas and other amenities. The bathroom with shower is separate and spacious with plenty of on-demand hot water and room to change in. Eco Hale was centrally located between Hilo and Volcano National Park so it was easy for us to move between each location. We were amazed at the attention to detail in this little cabin from the artistic decorative touches, inspirational quotes, our own personalized welcome sign which made us feel special (thank you!), extra reading materials, local information and to-do recommendations, beach and snorkeling gear, ice chest, recycle bins, drinking water, extra pillows and blankets, a cd player with a box of cds that we enjoyed, internet hotspot, playing cards, a guest book, a hide-away tree platform, and so much more! All this is to say, we highly recommend this little gem and these wonderful gracious hosts.

It was a pleasure staying at Kaeo and Karl's place. The unit was small but very well equipped and was perfect for me and my wife. Waking up in a rainforest setting was definitely a treat. Other than the well appointed unit, we were also provided numerous other goodies such as assorted fruit, a poke bowl, numerous juice/pop/beer, as well as wine for our honeymoon. We really couldn't have asked for a better host and a place to stay. Privacy was not an issue as the unit was completely separate from their house. Do not hesitate to book this - you will not regret it!

This place is fantastic! It's a little off the beaten path but the area is beautiful with colorful flora and fruit trees. The cottage itself is cosy, comfortable, and had everything we needed and more. We never met Karl but Kaeo was a warm and thoughtful host who generously prepared some delicious meals. Best quiche ever! We didn't even need to bring as much food as we did because of the welcome and farewell dinners as well as fruit and yogurt for breakfast. Thank you for a wonderful experience in the rain forest.

Kaeo was indeed a SUPERHOST. Eco Hale is TRULY an Aloha experience. WE LOVE YOU. We used the GPS and kind of got lost even though K&K gave us clear instructions how to navigate. I was lazy to get the printed driving instructions from the truck of the car. But she found us struggling and came out and helped us in every single step. The hospitality!!! It was like I came to my paati's(Grandma in Tamil- sorry Kaeo - only the love part. Not the age as you young at heart. ) place. Frankly you don't have to leave this place if you want to spend time with nature. The room was exactly like described. It has everything you will need and more. The avocados , oranges, tangerines and more fruits. The cookies and fresh banana bread. Yummmmyy. They have a "Things and stuff to know" VNP travel manual which has EVERYTHING you will need to know abt the park. Mahalo and Aloha!!!

Our stay at the Eco Hale was beyond amazing. To say Kaeo and Karl thought of everything would be an understatement. The space is small, but perfect and cozy. The windows in the bedroom and bathroom are all oriented to let in the most gorgeous natural light in the morning and throughout the day. It was so nice to wake up there each morning. The sounds of nature at night are soothing and put you right to sleep. We were celebrating a birthday and Kaeo greeted us with dinner, dessert, and a bottle of champagne. It was really above and beyond. We couldn't have asked for a kinder or more welcoming host. We would definitely return!

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Eco Hale for the first part of our honeymoon. Kaeo was wonderful and met us with hugs and smile. There was a light supper which was amazing after a 22-hour flight! The Eco Hale met our expectations and more. It is definitely off the beaten track but this allows for an amazing amount of privacy. You feel as if you are staying in the middle of a tropical jungle. The Eco Hale is small but has everything you could ask for. The extras, such as the snorkel gear and cooler, were perfect for day trips. We really appreciated the fresh fruit and muffins and all the extras in the kitchen. This was our first Airbnb experience and it exceeded our expectations!

Kaeo and Karl were the perfect hosts. Knowledgeable, personable, considerate and thoughtful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in their section of paradise. The space was welcoming and comfortable. The surrounding forest was surreal. We greatly enjoyed falling asleep to the tree frogs every night and waking up to the birds in the morning. Perfectly located between Hilo and VNP. I can say with confidence this has was, by far, my greatest Airbnb experience. Kaeo and Karl thought of everything you could possibly need to make the stay as comfortable and wonderful as possible.

My wife and I stayed at Eco Hale for 3 nights on an anniversary trip which also included stays at The Royal Hawaiian (Oahu) and Sheraton Kona Resort (Kailua-Kona). Without question, our fondest memories of the trip are the ones we made here. From the moment we pulled into the driveway, where Kaeo welcomed us as if she had known us our entire lives, we felt the special-ness of the place. The cabin itself is beautiful, clean, and filled with personal touches. It strikes the perfect balance between offering just enough modern convenience to feel luxurious (electricity, hot water on demand, etc.) while eschewing things like television which would detract from the natural beauty and intimacy of the setting. This is truly a place to step back, slow down, and relax. We loved falling asleep to the sound of the rain pitter-pattering on the roof and the frogs chirping outside the windows. Also, the location is ideal for exploring the volcano and the Hilo side of the island, which we ended up far preferring over the Kona side. We met several folks at the Kona resorts who only did day trips to the volcano, and I think that's a tragic mistake. The eastern side of the island is far more lush and beautiful, and offers numerous hikes, vistas, waterfalls, and gardens for those who appreciate that sort of thing. We followed several of Kaeo's recommendations and were not disappointed. In short, we could not recommend Eco Hale more highly, and hope one day to have the opportunity to return.

Mahalo, dear hosts, for this perfect place For Eco Hale is truly a sacred space. In your rain forest so lush and green Colorful gardens with flowers and fruit wait to be seen. In this cottage so cozy and sweet You frequently left scrumptious (many homebaked!) treats The tastefully chosen bamboo decor Reflected nature's gifts outside our door. Our sensuous showers under the tree canopy nearby And hearty breakfasts indoors OR on the lanai Prepared us for hiking volcanoes, waterfalls and more On this, Big Island's, stunning east shore. And then, at the end of the day, with YOUR slippers on our feet We curled up in our candlelit cabin with your plentiful books so neat Listened to the melodies of tree frogs and birds And fell asleep as the patter of rain was heard. When we think of Hawai'is beautiful nature We will remember what you at Eco Hale nurture Thank you for your ALOHA -- the joyful sharing of life energy -- And for Eco Hale, an unforgettable sanctuary.

When we arrived in Hawaii after a long and somewhat arduous journey with a 9-month old baby we were welcomed with actual open arms by Kaeo. She was so kind, caring, and open and we felt instantly at home. We were greeted with a delicious dinner and each day would come home to find mandarins, oranges, lemons, avocados, and delicious home-baked treats at our door step. Both Kaeo and Karl were incredibly helpful in planing out stay, and even though we knew we could always go next door to ask them questions, we also felt that we were completely alone and isolated in our little jungle retreat. The accommodations were clean, neat, and simple but small, so if you aren't comfortable sharing a small space with your traveling partner know that you'll be in close quarters. Despite the size the Hale never feels small or cramped and everything is organized so perfectly that you'll wonder why you ever thought you needed so much space! We loved the experience (and challenge) of our outdoor kitchen and found ourselves cooking delicious meals with local produce and will forever miss our fresh-squeezed juices each morning. You're definitely off the beaten path here, so be prepared for some driving (30 minutes and up) if you want to go the National Park, beaches, or into Hilo. We felt it was well-worth it to do the extra driving. Its also good to note that this is an Eco Hale in the Rainforest- so be prepared for rain! While your days might get wet, falling asleep to the sound of rain and coqui frogs singing can't be topped! In short, our time at Kaeo and Karl's was wonderful, special, memorable, and beautiful and we HIGHLY recommend it!

Best place you could wish for, not only because of the amazing little place, but also because of the incredible nice hosts! I didnt get to meet Karl, but Kaeo . She was so nice and sweet and so much fun! She told us what we could do and had many cards/maps of places in a big folder in the condo. We got homemade bananabread, oatmealbars, tons of fresh fruit, the fridge was filled with drinks (limonade, beer) and on our first evening we got a big plate with food, small plated with seafood and amaaaaaazing pineapple cheesecake. everything you need is there. Its soo clean and cozy, bugs were no problem, as long as you dont leave the door wide open. We loved the big island, we loved this place and we loved having these amazing hosts. Kaeo even did laundry for us which was so kind of her, i couldnt imagine having a better host. This is a great choice to stay at.

If we had to review Eco Hale in one short sentence, we would say that we have never been treated with so much aloha during our visits to the Hawaiian Archipelago. Kaeo and Karl did everything (and more) to make our stay enjoyable. Their cottage has everything we needed and a lot more that we did not excpect. The surroundings are drop dead gorgeous- a carefully maintained tropical foliage, the sounds of Coqui frogs at night and birds in the morning make the scene almost surreal. The owners are friendly, helpful and give 100% privacy if that's what you require. Karl designed the cottage perfectly, the large bathroom window is overlooking the garden yet it doesn't make you feel uncomfortable (read- yes, you can walk naked all you want:)) Kaeo spoiled us many times with great local food and fruits, which we devoured immediately:) The location is perfect for exploring Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, the Hilo side of the island and it's not far from Hawai'i most amazing mountain, Mauna Kea. In overall, we can recommend Karl & Kaeo cottage in a heartbeat to anyone looking for a clean, affordable accommodation in the southeastern part of Big Island. Once again, mahalo for everything, we will never forget you and your great place and hopefully, our paths will cross again in the nearest future.

Our stay from May 7 - May 12, 2016 was good. Though we both did get massive bug bites during the night but oh well. Part of staying in an eco system I guess. THe best part was the warm greetings for my girlfriend and I and all the delicious goodies (Too many to list). Thank you! :-) The only downside to our stay was the whole trash separating deal. I understand the environment and the eco system its in, but we got to the point where we just used our own trash bag and took it to dumpster in town as we were not to go through and separate everything. Otherwise great place. And thanks for all your Aloha hospitality. -anthony and renee California May 7 - May 12

This is one of the BEST Airbnb places I've stayed. We had detailed instructions for arrival, delicious fruits and snacks waiting for us. There was even a welcome signed customized just for us! The cottage is beautifully decorated and includes anything you would need even slippers, umbrellas and rain ponchos. There are several books about the area and the many things to do. The yard is lush with all varieties of plants. I loved listening to the noises of the rain forest. I asked Kaeo and Karl for a tour of their solar powered setup and rain catchment system which was very interesting. I have already recommended this place to other family members. It is a great place to totally relax and enjoy true Hawaii and not feel like a rushed tourist. I wish I'd booked for a longer stay.

A few words come to mind when thinking of Kaeo and Karl's place - beautiful, magical, serene, peaceful, authentic, incredible. Kaeo welcomed us in her driveway with open arms and led us into the private, rustic eco hale which is neatly tucked away in the middle of rainforest. The place is exactly as described in the photos and truly a unique experience for any traveller. We were also spoiled with homemade treats each day, which made us feel loved and cared for. The eco hale has everything that you would need for a rural retreat and so much more. We were pleasantly surprised to see trail guides for the day trips in the Volcanoes National Park, as well as blankets and hot water flasks for night trips to the volcano. Falling asleep to the sounds of crickets and birds and cooking on the patio with the rainforest in full view was also a delight. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a unique and unforgettable Airbnb experience. Definitely the best we have had a so far! Mahalo K & K :)

My husband, Trevor, and I came here on our honeymoon... we were simply speechless. Staying at Eco Hale was an experience of lifetime. Not only was it beautiful, but Keao was an INCREDIBLE host. She came to check on us and left us the most delicious baked goods we've ever had, and I'm assuming they were all made with local ingredients because they were amazing. Her banana macadamia but bread was my absolute favorite. We are from the east coast, just outside of New York City, so staying in the heart of the Hawaiian rainforest was truly something we will never forget and treasure forever. Falling asleep to the sound of rain on all the trees and the soothing sound of whistling tree frogs was a memory that we will hold dear to us for years to come. You are a short drive (15-20 minutes) from Kilauea or the town of Hilo in both directions. There are countless outdoor adventures, such as breath taking tide pools, waterfalls, and driving to the top of Mauna Kea (one of the best thing's we've ever seen), and being a short drive away from all these incredible adventures is just perfect. I really have no words for how awesome this experience was. To anyone thinking about staying at Eco Hale... DO IT - you won't regret it! If I could give this a 1,000 star rating I would. We LOVED staying here, and would 100% come back. Thank you Kaeo and Karl for making our honeymoon everything we had dreamed of!!!!

We loved K&K's Eco Hale in the rainforest! We had such a great time - pure nature! It's very close to the Volcano National Park. Kaeo is an awesome host and more than happy to help or to answer questions! We would definitely recommend this place.

This was a very unique and the best airbnb experience we have had. Kaeo and Karl were very nice host. Kaeo welcomed us with hugs and so much aloha. Very beautifully designed house. It was just amazing staying here in the midst of rainforest, sleeping to the sounds of frogs and waking to chirping birds was a wonderful experience. We explored Volcano National park, Mauna Kae from here. Kaeo had provided with cookies and banana bread and some food which were scrumptious. Kaeo has also provided all the amenities - binoculors, beach gear, slippers, large flashlight, books just to list a few! Highly recommend this place.

Loved staying at the Eco Hale, and we couldn't have asked for better hosts than Kaeo & Karl! We arrived late evening our first day in Hawaii, and Kaeo prepared a wonderful salad with sushi for our dinner. It was absolutely delicious. We were treated to such kindness and thoughtfulness throughout our trip: a bag of lychee fruits (because we happened to mention how we loved them, and saw a farm stand selling them), wonderful home-baked banana bread with macadamia nuts, a small vase of flowers. Sleeping in the hale was like being in the middle of a rainforest with the songs of frogs and birds serenading us. It's a magical place, and definitely one of the highlights of our trip. Highly recommended!!

It's a good place for healing insomnia, at least it worked pretty well for me. Before came to the big island, I stayed at a luxurious hotel in Honolulu for three days, I tried the spa for relaxing, and everything I thought may help, unfortunately, none of them works as good as stay in Eco Hale. In general, I do not tolerate any noise or animal's song when I'm sleeping. Surprisingly I could fall asleep in frog's relentlessly chirping noises without any pills. I have to say this is a fantastic place with magics! Beware of the mosquito! The extreme brutal creature could leave many huge bumps on your for a week. It's a lovely place for the single person, no disturbs or negative energies. You could feel safe and relaxed. 如果喜欢亲近大自然的感觉,这里应该是一个不错的选择。如果为了便利和接近城市可以考虑其他。绿绿的感觉看起很放松,不过注意蚊子很毒。

Our stay at the Eco Hale was better than we could have imagined. Kaeo welcomed us with open arms and a well stocked fridge and pantry. We especially enjoyed the fresh fruit, banana bread, and the ahi she shared with us. Eco Hale is a great place to stay while exploring the nearby national park and the Hilo side of the island. We appreciated the provided beach towels, mat, and snorkels which we used at Kapoho tide pools. We would not change anything about our experience at the Eco Hale and hope to stay there again in the future. Mahalo Kaeo and Karl, and thanks for the parting flowers!

Staying in Mountain View with Kaeo and Karl is exactly what an adventurous soul needs. Their home is in the middle of the rainforest and their eco house cabin should be an example to each and every one of us that we can live in an eco friendly environment. They have everything you can think of for an adventure in Big Island. From snorkeling to hiking, they got you covered. I am still in awe with every detail that Kaeo and Karl have came up with in that house. It can't get better, it's already prefect!

Kaeo thought of everything! Down to providing a Dr. Seus book for us to read to my toddler (we read it every night!). There were welcoming snacks, fresh fruits, fully stocked fridge, and baked goods that Kaeo would bring over. Super thoughtful and gracious host! And it's only 20 minutes from the National Volcanoes Park.

Nice place in a tropical garden. A bit away from everything - you have to drive many miles to get something to eat. Kaeo was very friendly, but we saw her only when we arrived and Karl was a 'ghost-host' (we didn't see him). The only surprising thing was, that we had to pay additional $ 31.- on arrival in cash, which we didn't expect due to the information on the eco hale airbnb page.

This was an incredible experience! We spent a lot of our time near the volcano, so the location was perfect! It was very cute and quaint, and it had pretty much everything and anything you could imagine (food, amenity, cooking, etc.) Kaeo and Karl were very responsive and awesome to work with! They were very also very warm, generous and welcoming. With the beautiful touches they've added to the hale, the tranquility and peacefulness of its surroundings, it truly was a wonderful experience.

Great stay! Welcomed with a delicious light snack. Little snacks and amenities found around every corner: headlamps, yoga mat, fruit for a smoothie, fresh coffee beans, the list goes on. Kaeo was especially sweet since we weren't feeling too well and brough over fresh ginger and honey for tea. The location is secluded both within town and within the overall property. Beautifully landscaped.

Staying in Eco Hale was the highlight of our trip. We have traveled all over the world, always using AirBnB, and there has never been a host like Kaeo. She takes great pride in her space, and makes sure you have everything you need for a relaxing, complete stay. The difference with Kaeo and Karl and with Eco Hale, is the true experience of a Bed and Breakfast. There was everything provided from sweats and slippers, to a fully stocked kitchen, to the drinking water tank being magically filled every day, to a thank you note and parting gift at the end. Nothing was missed, and it made us feel welcome, relaxed, and at home far away from home. Even with all of these extras, we did not see Kaeo or Karl during our stay after check-in, and were given the privacy that allowed for a perfect stay. Eco Hale is a dreamy little spot with a magical bathroom and a porch perfect for playing cards, eating dinner, and listening to the rain and coquis. We missed making pancakes on the porch and eating fresh fruit every morning the rest of our trip! Such a perfect way to start your day. We only wish we would have booked it towards the end of our trip when that vacation exhaustion starts to set in and you want to relax in your accommodations! Kaeo has a passion for hosting and it truly shines through. We would recommend to anyone staying on Hawaii Island to stay here! Thank you Kaeo!

Kaeo is an amazing person and host. My husband and I felt welcome from the moment we arrived. We were welcomed by Kaeo with hugs and a delicious chicken salad. The Eco Hale was spotless and exactly as shown in the photos. The bed and linens were very comfortable and the shower had great water pressure. The grounds are gorgeous and create a peaceful space ... we fell asleep each night to the sound of the rain in the trees and the coqui frogs chirping. You are really in the rainforest though it is an easy drive from Eco Hale to the Volcanoes National Park and to Hilo. We had just spent three nights in Honolulu and it was really wonderful to relax in such a peaceful setting for a few days. Also, our Airbnb experience in Honolulu was not the best, so we were so happy to arrive at Eco Hale and find everything just as described. We ate breakfast and dinner at Eco Hale and took snacks with us for our sightseeing during the day. The kitchen amenities were plentiful and we had no trouble preparing meals. I am so glad we stayed at Eco Hale and highly recommend it!

We knew from the moment we arrived that Kaeo & Karl were wonderful, warm people. I would say that this experience was the perfect definition of "balance". -Balance between hospitality and privacy. (We knew they were there if we needed anything, but we were also totally free to come and go as we pleased. And we tended to leave early and arrive late, as we spent our days exploring the island.) -Balance between a getaway in the rain forest and accessibility to everything. (You fall asleep to the sounds of frogs, but are only a short drive from Hilo, Volcano National Park, Mauna Kea...) If you are thinking about booking with Kaeo & Karl, don't hesitate!!! It was amazing, and one of our favorite memories of the island. Thank you so much for your hospitality!

Kaeo and Karl made every effort to make us feel welcome and comfortable: a cold dish plate, beautiful ripe local fruits and coffee were waiting for us, along with a personalized welcome message on the little board with our names :) The place is a product of love - you can see that easily, and spend hours noticing all the lovely details and decorations in the hale and the tropical garden. We are highly recommending this place if you're staying at the Volcano area for a few nights (we stayed 3 nights - note that the place is tiny, so if you're not travelling light, you probably don't want to stay more than that).

Kaeo and Karl have created a beautiful space and made staying at their house a great experience. The house is immaculately clean, and stocked with everything you might need during your stay. Kaeo welcomed us with hugs and an amazing vegetable lasagna for dinner with a pineapple-cherry upside down cake for dessert. We made breakfasts with the local fruit and coffee, and enjoyed them on the porch overlooking their wonderful garden. They are a short drive from Volcano National Park, a great farmer's market on weekends, and Hilo. I highly recommend them if you are staying on the east side of the island.

This was our first stay at an Airbnb location, and it fulfilled and exceed our expectations. All pictures and descriptions are 100% accurate. Our hosts were open, kind, and generous, and they made us feel like family. They also have excellent local knowledge and are willing to share it. If you would like to go to the volcano or to the lava flow in Kalapana, this is a great location. Detox from the hustle and bustle of life and spend your time here!

Eco Hale was a splendid little getaway to end our stay in Hawaii. Kaeo was incredibly welcoming and while she made it clear she was available, we were provided some desired privacy. The amenities on site were top notch! The binder of recommendations led us to the Pahoa farmers market (which we thoroughly enjoyed) and the available cookware/supplies made us feel right at home when making meals. Kaeo and Karl have really made this place a gem; there are so many wonderful little details which imbue Eco Hale with such great energy. Truly a highlight of our stay.

The whole stay was absolutely incredible! Kaeo is the ultimate host, and the small treats and attention to detail make this stay easy to recommend. Where to begin...Eco Hale is truly a special place. Kaeo and Karl are amazing. They have everything covered from the accommodations to kitchen utensils to anything else you think you might need. We used the thermoses they had for our early morning trip to go see the lava...perfect!! Kaeo greeted us upon check in and gave us the rundown also shared info on key things in the area and recommendations. She had made us pork tamales and provided green salsa, cheese, and avocado.... so tasty and filling! The accommodations are spot on from the decor to the layout. They provide extra of everything so do not worry. The fresh fruit made for a wonderful breakfast add on. Fresh baked banana blueberry bread was to die for!!! I was truly sad to leave..we were only able to stay for two days but the memories will last forever!!! Kaeo and Karl...thank you for sharing your piece of paradise with us. Truly an honor and a privilege. Mahalo from the bottom of our hearts!!

The last time we stayed at the magical Eco Hale, we vowed to return. And happily, just two short years later, we were able to visit again! We love this place so much. And our host, Kaeo. We ADORE her. She is the loveliest. Hospitality incarnate. The cottage itself is composed of two rooms: a cozy bedroom with a compact/efficient kitchen space and a bathroom that is impeccably clean with beautiful custom tilework lining the shower walls. The interior spaces spill out onto a small porch with more kitchen space and outdoor seating. There, you're nestled into a lush rainforest-garden, secluded from it all, and connected to the tropical surroundings in a way that can only happen in a place like Mountain View. The frequent rain showers, the warm sunlight through all the green, and the sound of birds and frogs envelope you in a whole new world. Kaeo has appointed every corner of the cottage with things to make your stay comfortable and memorable. Home-baked hiking bars and a beautiful tray of fresh fruit are just two examples of the many "gifts" you may find at Eco Hale. Twenty minutes from Volcano (current lava flows are spectacular), the Puna coast (dappled with natural lava-warmed pools and home to one of our favorite things--the Wednesday night-market), and Hilo (a fun town to explore which borders waterfall country) make this location ideal for exploring important must-see sections of the island. We love having Mountain View as our home-base and no doubt we will be returning once again.

We had a wonderful stay and Kaeo & Karl are amazing hosts. So many personal little amenities and goodies. Truly welcoming. The cottage is so peaceful and intimate. Very relaxing. It was a good location for our exploration of Volcanoes National Park and the Hilo/Puna area. It give the feeling of being secreted away in the jungle in your own intimate world. How cool! Exceptionally clean. Particularly given how it's situated. I spend a lot of time in out of the way cabins and none of them are as fresh and clean as this.

Absolutely loved staying at Eco Hale! Kaeo greeted us upon arrival and was very friendly and welcoming, and provided us with some tips and recommendations. We didn't see either Kaeo or Karl during our stay as they gave us complete privacy. We had a few questions and Kaeo was very responsive to our text messages. The whole place is amazing. It feels like you're camping in the middle of the rainforest, but with all the comforts of home! Very peaceful and tranquil location, perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring the Volcano National Park and surrounding area... loved watching the lava flow into the ocean at Kalapana! We were greeted home each night by a chorus of tree frogs :) The home is fully stocked with anything you could need and much much more. The fridge was loaded up with various juices, water and snacks (including some fresh baked banana bread). So many other things were provided... coffee beans, grinder & french press, bug spray, sunblock, beach gear, binoculars, flashlights, spare clothing, thermos, and much more. Thanks Kaeo & Karl!

If you want a unique, Hawaiian living experience during your stay on the Big Island away from the hustle and bustle of normal life, look no further than Eco Hale! We enjoyed this cabin living lifestyle for the amount of time that we stayed in Hilo -- falling asleep to the sounds of nature outside was just heavenly! It was cozy, clean, and comfortable...close enough to the park and Hilo city, but far away from car and people traffic. ;) Eco Hale had everything we needed -- you could tell that Kaeo and Karl really put a lot of thought and love into the place! And where to begin with all of the beautiful things that I want to say about Kaeo? She is absolutely the hostess with the mostest! She was always so kind and thoughtful towards us -- she left us the sweetest notes/tiny gifts and the yummiest treats from hearty potato soup to homemade turkey sandwiches (for turkey day!). She welcomed us warmly, was flexible, and respectful of our privacy. She was absolutely lovely and beautiful in every way! If you choose to stay in Eco Hale, you will, without a doubt, feel the love and warmth! Mahalo, Kaeo, and thank you for making our stay one of a kind!

We loved our stay at Eco Hale. The place was snug (so don't bring too many luggages!) but it had everything you needed plus much more. I loved our view when I made breakfast in the morning, where else can you stare out into the rainforest while making omelette? And Kaeo made it even more special. She was so thoughtful and kind. She had a snack waiting for us when we arrived and other baked goodies. Since it was raining a lot while we were there, it was really hard for our towels to dry so she would dry them for us and leave them neatly folded on the table outside, in a bag, every night. You really can not find this kind of attentiveness and care anywhere else.

We stayed at Eco Hale our first few nights on the island and absolutely fell in love with this cozy little house. So much thought and Kaeo's personal touch went into making this a delightful place to stay. It's clean, tidy and beautifully decorated! Everything you can imagine wanting/needing has been provided. If I knew how wonderful our stay would be I would have booked it for longer. Thanks again Kaeo & Karl!

When showing us around, Kaeo mentioned that she and Karl try to under-advertise and over-deliver with their Airbnb listing, and that's a perfect summary of our experience here. Amenities they made available to us included beach gear (snorkels, masks, fins, towels) and an abundance of tasty snacks. The Eco Hale is very private, nestled into a tropical garden away from the main house. If you're looking for a compromise between staying in a hotel or camping out, the Eco Hale offers the best of both worlds.

This is our best AirBnB experience up to date ! The location is beautiful , the cabin is very cute and cozy . Kaeo is an amazing host - she has provided a cornucopia of delicious snacks and fruits. Thank you so much , Kaeo !

Incredible experience! My husband and I Honeymooned over Christmas at the Eco Hale. Kaeo's hospitality was so kind, so warm, so generous. The hale is cozy and well appointed. The location is off the beaten path, but nothing is too far away. We enjoyed being secluded in the rainforest with the gorgeous foliage and the croak of coqui frogs. All of the handmade treats and little extras really made it special for us, especially being away from home at Christmas. We'll be back! So highly recommended!

We stayed at Eco Hale for four days during our honeymoon in Hawaii and had an incredible time. Kaeo and Karl have outfitted this spot with everything you could need for the area - even including special treats when we arrived. The description truly delivers! It was a wonderful and tranquil spot to come back to after a day of exploring the area or hiking and a great place to relax, under the leaves of the oh-so-close rainforest. This was our first experience with Airbnb and we could not have been happier. All the special touches made our stay at the Eco Hale unforgettable. We would have been happy to spend many more days there!

The Eco Hale far exceeded our expectations and was the perfect spot to use as a base for exploring the Volcano National Park system. Kaeo & Karl were friendly and highly responsive leading up to and during our stay there. The cabin itself is impeccably clean and came stocked with much more than just the necessary items one would need, from cooking supplies and home baked goods to informational binders, headlamps, candles, etc. The property is secluded in the rainforest and relaxing with a book or going to sleep to the chorus of frogs and birds is a memorable treat. Would highly recommend the Eco Hale to anyone looking for quiet and solitude during their trip to this side of the island. Thanks again K & K, hope to make your acquaintance again someday.

Me and my girlfriend loved our 3 nights here, a really peaceful rainforest retreat nice and comfortable with plenty of welcoming little extras. We didn't meet Karl but Kaeo was very kind and welcoming. Would definitely stay here again, but make sure you have a car if you're planning a visit.

Kaeo was absolutely wonderful! Lots of snacks provided, she was also enormously helpful with things to do! So friendly and free flowing as well! We can't wait to come back!! I felt the location was perfect. The kitchen was well stocked, grills and "stove" out on the porch were clean and well working. My only complaint is that it's damp and feels much colder than it is. Obviously you're in a jungle/rainforest so that's a given but the space only has 3 windows, no heating/air conditioning, fans. So to get fresh air you have too open windows/door and it lets in so much moisture. BUT the water at the space was hot when needed. Bed was springy, neither very soft or hard, lots of extra blankets and pillows. We were about 1-2 hours from everything we wanted to do. We went to a black sand beach, hiked the 5 miles round trip to the green sand beach, went to Hilina Pali, and saw snow on Mauna Kea (which is on the way to the airport). We found two health food stores, island naturals in Hilo (a one stop shop!), and Keaau natural foods who has raw macadamia nuts that are out of this world! After the green sand beach there is a yummy Thai place called is lae garden and just up the way a mile or so is a pizza place that advertised gluten free and vegan called DJ pizza. Stop at the kona brewery if you fly into kona. Their food is amazing, strawberry salad and sweet potato pie were A+!! Kaeo gave us great ideas and pointed us in the right direction to find what we wanted to do. She also has huge binders of info in the room of local things and volcanos. Really awesome! She suggested the boat tour for seeing the volcano and lava vs flying.

This is a quiet, secluded space perfect for those on the go all day and want a quiet retreat. Cooking was outside as well as bathroom door. Privacy was plentiful. Hosts are generous and knowledgeable about the area. Welcome snacks and food were great. The only downside was the weather.

This is a truly beautiful place to stay - unlike any other AirBnB that I have experienced before. Quite, peaceful and conveniently located between Hilo and the Volcanoes National Park. You will not find a kinder host. Directions for arrival were easy to follow and accurate. I would absolutely recommend staying here.

If you're looking to have a peaceful, private retreat in the middle of the Hawaiian rain-forest, this place is an absolute haven. I can't believe all of the little perks this place offers. Fresh citrus for us to pick in the morning, fresh fruit laid out for our breakfast (and the best banana bread i've ever had), the place is stocked really well just in case you need anything or forgot anything. Ka'eo was incredibly friendly and accommodating. We were so comfortable and relaxed the whole time we were there, we really wish we could have stayed longer. <3

Our stay at Eco Hale was special on many levels. So much thought and love has been put into the guest experience that you can just relax and enjoy. It is a small space and perfectly adequate...cozy is the word! We appreciated our hosts and the communication prior to and during our visit. And we appreciated the privacy they accorded us as well! Wonderful treats, travel tips and even a device to pluck fresh oranges from the bountiful tree out front. Yes, you will need to do some driving to the rainforest location, but the unique and memorable experience makes it totally worth it.

Everything was just as described on the airbnb website. Our stay was lovely and we very much enjoyed Eco Hale. It was exactly what we were looking for to make our trip feel authentic and adventurous with an upscale feel. We could fall asleep to the sounds of nature but had a very comfortable space with a lovely bathroom and emenities. If we are ever back on the Big Island we would definitely stay at Eco Hale again. The fresh fruit was so refreshing and the rainforest environment was romantic and private.

Such a great place to stay. Away from all the city noise. So so so peaceful. Exactly as described in the details. The Hale has everything you need. Cozy bed, umbrellas, ponchos, separate bathroom, snokerling gear, beach chairs, comfy bed, mugs, plates and some more. It also has a bunch of binders with all the information about the island. You don't even need (Hidden by Airbnb) for anything. Everything is right there in the binders. Can only imagine the amount of time they have spent creating those binders and keeping it up to date. But that is not the best part of the hale. Its the location location location. Its in the middle of a rainforest. And you fall off to sleep to the sounds of birds, rain and frogs. Never had a peaceful sleep like this before. It brought back memories of our native place back home. The pictures do not do justice to the Hale. You have to live there to feel it :) I don't even know how to be grateful to the hosts. We did not get a chance to meet Karl but Kaeo was there to welcome us and was able to accommodate an early checkin request. She is such a wonderful lady to talk to. She is so welcoming and she really wants you to have a great time. We felt like a part of their family. There were fruits, baked goodies for us on arrival. And everyday she would leave something for us on the porch to eat :) There is absolutely no reason for you to not stay here if you are visiting Hilo. Like I said, the location is amazing but the hosts are even more amazing. We had the best vacation of our life. And we'll defnitley come back to Eco Hale next time we are on the island. To Kaeo and karl, we are forever in debt for the warm hospitality and for letting us be a part of your home. Mahalo from the bottom of our hearts. P.S: The Hale is best suitable for two people. It's not very huge and no closet space so its best if you have minimal luggage. We had one check-in bag and two carry ons and we did just fine.

This was a magical spot! We got in late to a wonderful greeting and a dinner of pupus and treats galore! The frogs sang us to sleep at night and it couldn't have been more peaceful. The place was stocked with everything we could have need and way more. Thank you so much! We will return!

Go there! You will love the cottage, peace & quiet, tropical surroundings, great hosts. A serene place to settle into after a busy day of touring the island. Highly recommended.

You couldn't ask for better hosts. Kaeo and Karl were very warm and welcoming. Everything at the Hale is organized to make your stay great. The property is a tropical paradise with lush beautiful gardens. We made fresh squeezed OJ each morning from the tree that is just steps from the Hale. You won't regret a visit here.

Wow! What can we say? This little patch of paradise was perfect! I have never slept so well! The location is absolutely amazing! The sounds of the wildlife and the smell of the plants is intoxicating. We will remember our stay here forever. Kaeo and Karl provide everything you could possibly need and more! Boogie boards, snorkel and masks, flippers, towels, water, snacks, home baked treats, coffee, home picked fruits..... The pictures on the site are beautiful but once you arrive it is even more stunning! We can't say thankyou enough and we can't recommend this place enough either! Beautiful, de-stressing, peaceful, Paradise! Thanks Kaeo and Karl! Oli and Coco xxx

This is a little slice of paradise off the beaten path! The hale is planted in the middle of a rain forest garden and feels very private. We never expected a eco stay to have so many conveniences! Being off the grid felt luxurious and we really didn't need to make any sacrifices to remain environmentally friendly! Kaeo met us when we arrived and welcomed us with food and baked goods that warmed our souls :) Words cannot express how beautiful the eco hale was, or what amazing hosts Kaeo and Karl were. This was an experience that will remain forever in our hearts.

Eco Hale is a perfect piece of luxury in the middle of the rain forest. The house is off the grid but provides all the amenities that a traveller could want including internet connectivity via 4G connection if required. Kaeo and Karl provided local foods for dinner on the first night and enough fruit, banana bread, granola, yoghurt, cookies and milk to last our three night stay. The cabin is small but contains everything we needed for a great stay near the Volcano National Park (approx 25min away). The bedroom and bathroom are very clean and well appointed and the setting is tranquil and beautiful. We would love to go back!

Kaeo and Karl’s Eco Hale is the place to be if you are looking for a cozy place to rest in the countryside of Hawaii. The Eco Hale is a wonderful end to daily adventures around the island. Nocturnal creatures serenade the nights, and the beautiful garden is a great place to relax if you tire from adventure. Kaeo and Karl are great hosts. Warm and friendly introductions and lots of information which my detail oriented partner loved. I was pleasantly surprised by fresh fruit and baked goodies. The blueberry uffins made my day. I admire the life K&K have built for themselves, and I appreciate their willingness to share a piece of it with the rest of the world. This was my first Airbnb, and I am afraid that future hosts will face a high benchmark.

Being in the hospitality industry, I really noticed the extreme attention to detail. There was more offered than I could even attempt to enjoy. Kaeo has a true heart and you can tell the moment you meet her.

Very comfortable stay! We were warmly welcomed at check-in. We didn't spend much time at Eco Hale as we spent a lot of time exploring the Big Island, but we appreciated the food & fresh fruit provided and all the basics & extras (towels, toiletries, snorkeling gear, water, etc.)!

This place and the hosts are amazing. Its beautiful and super cozy. It has its own personality, a little piece of paradise. Hosts were warm and welcoming. You will be surprised by all the supplies and equipment available to you. Our "coup de coeur".

We had a wonderful stay here -- so much thoughtfulness and attention to detail. Lovely location in the rain forest. We were there during a big rainstorm and spent the entire day inside listening to the rain and the sounds of the forest. It was great! We really wanted to feel away from the crowd and this place was perfect. Truly a special spot with phenomenal hosts.

Little hidden gem in a great location, 20 mins drive to Volcano National Park and a great starting point to explore the eastside of Hawai'i island. Kaeo was incrediblly nice and responsive to any questions. The breakfast was great, overall a wonderful stay. We would definitely come back!

I had an awesome experience with Kaeo and Karl. Their place is just fantastic imagine you are in the middle of a rain forest with all the things that you need! They provide you fresh bread, healthy snacks, comfortable bed, flash lights, clean bathroom with organic aromatic soaps, shampoo and lotions. They have good internet, cookware, umbrellas, cozy blankets if you are planning to check out the volcanoes in the night and they have everything that you can think of. You feel like you are in ur house that is located at a rain forest. Their place is very close to restaurants, food land and volcano places.

Kaeo & Karl have created a beautiful little vacation home & do their best to anticipate their guests needs. Staying at their quaint off grid cottage is an excellent way to try out tiny home type living. Volcano Nat Park is close by BUT you do need your own transportation to easily get around. Expect to be loudly serenaded by coqui frogs at night & soothed by gentle rain.

We stayed at the EcoHale for 5 days during our honeymoon. It was more than we could ask for! Kaeo and Karl were gracious hosts. We appreciated the fresh fruit every morning, bottle of champagne for us newlyweds, and promptness with all of our communication. The volcano was only 30 minutes away from the EcoHale and was very close to all the amenities we needed. It was never more than an hour drive to get to our snorkeling, birding, and hiking. This luxury off-the-grid experience was everything we imagined! We enjoyed the sound of the birds in the morning and the coqui frogs at night (although, if you're a light sleeper like my wife, I would suggest a pair of ear plugs as the frogs can be pretty vocal). Thank you, Kaeo and Karl!

My husband and I stayed here, this cozy lovely eco hale, to celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary. It was ok to find the place because (Hidden by Airbnb) map guided us exactly the same as what 'aunt Kaeo' said to us before we arrived. We came from South Korea, took 10 hours to get here, and this Eco hale was the reason why we decided to choose Hilo for our anniversary. Our first impression on Eco hale was unforgettable. I couldnt believe what I see with my eyes! So beautiful, peaceful, and vivid with colorful trees and singing birds, and also with warm welcoming hug from Aunt Kaeo! She was so beautiful and kind! She explained details about this little 'wonderland' to us when arrival and we started to explore this little house. It is fit for two of us. There was everything we needed. Aunt Kaeo gave us a wine with a sweet memo and we really appreciate it! We could find delicate touches of Karl and Kaeo everywhere and could feel how they pour their love to this house. I want to say thank you so much that we had the most amazing days and nights in our life in this Eco Hale. Thank you for giving us a stunning memory. We will definitely come back! Mahalo nui :)

What a wonderful stay! It is very secluded but detailed directions made it easy to find, and it's right in the middle of a rainforest garden! Kaeo and Karl have done a fantastic job of recreating a lush tropical rainforest, and you are right in the middle of it. They also have provided snacks of all kinds and fresh fruit and juices, really making you feel welcome and special upon arrival. The sounds from the frogs in the forest at night are musical and enhance the feel of being in the forest. There are also many birds flitting around day and night. Make sure you walk around and view the different exotic tropical flora. The room itself was very comfortable and clean. Would definitely go back.

My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon and we had such a great time. Upon arrival we were greeted with fresh baked breads, muffins, and tons of snacks. She even had a welcome sign, and a bottle of wine as a wedding gift with a very thoughtful note. Although we just met Kaeo it felt as though she was a long time friend. Eco Hale provided us with everything we needed and then some. Would definitely recommend!

Kaeo and Karl were wonderful hosts. This little house was perfect for our needs - it was clean, had a very nice garden, the bed is very confortable and we had full privacy. Their generosity is just phenomenal. On our arrival, Kaeo have prepared us an appetizer which was gluten free due to my dietary restriction (it was very nice from her to pay attention to all the small details). Also, we had plenty of fruits on the counter, banana bread (really tasty) and other goodies in the fridge for the breakfast. During the week she also offered us a dinner that she had prepared during the day. Once again, she is a really good cook and we have really appreciate everything she was doing for us! It is an amazing spot for those who like to hike since it is very close from Volcano. Many information on the trails were available in the information book in the house. During our stay, we had one rainy day and Kaeo was really kind and put our wet towel in her dryer in order for us to have dry towels the next day. We will recommend this place at 100% to everyone who is going to Big Island. Mahalo Mel & Simon

We loved all the decorations and personal touches we found all around the hale. It made it feel so comfortable and homey. Kaeo and Karl had everything you could think of needing for your stay, and things you wouldn't have thought of as well (flashlights, warm clothing, binoculars, etc). The many personalized guide books Kaeo and Karl provided were invaluable for us to get a local perspective to make our trip even better. They had so many suggestions that you can't find anywhere else. One of our favorite suggestions from Kaeo when we arrived was the night market at Kalapana - great food, music, and people and a great way to end our trip!

First airbnb we've ever done. Nicest lady in the world, she was very helpful and warming. Really happy to have stayed here. (The frogs can be a little loud at night, but your living in the nature, cant control it)

My wife and I stayed at the Eco Hale in August of 2017 and thoroughly enjoyed the location, setting, and price. The description offered on airbnb is accurate. You are located in the Hawaiian rain forest in a beautiful garden filled with tropical plants. You have a great deal of privacy yet Kaeo is always a text/email away and eager to answer any questions you may have. You are a 20 minute drive from Volcanoes National Park and the town of Hilo. Various fruits, a loaf of banana bread, hot cereal, and pancake mix was provided for breakfasts. Yum! Book the Eco Hale, you wont regret it! The property is beautiful and the hosts are great!

We really don't know how any practical or aesthetic improvements can be made for Eco Hale...the attention to detail and comfort that Kaeo and Karl have for their guests is beyond superb. And if you like to be surrounded by a botanical diversity of plants , this is the place for you. A lot of love went into the landscaping. Eco Hale is the perfect place for seclusion as well as close enough to Hilo and many adventures along the south and west Hawaii.

Where does one start? First and foremost, you must try it to truly know how magical this place is. It's tucked away in the rain forest and was gorgeous! I was a solo adventurer for 9 days and loved everything about the place. Everything is there for amenities and I didn't need anything else. I went to the store and farmer's markets (plenty to choose from!) for the staples when I wanted to make any sort of meals for my stay which was nice. The fresh fruit, little treats, and yummy meals were a treat I wasn't expecting and they were so yummy! I didn't meet Karl this trip, but his touches he put on building this beautiful humble abode was perfect. Kaeo is the sweetest and most adorable free spirit and I couldn't have asked for more from her! Her local tips in the binders are perfect and lovely for when you want to check out everything around you and across the Island. Very well put together! If I had a question while across the Island, she responded almost immediately with advice or tips. I loved falling asleep to the local wildlife and rain, as well as waking up to the beautiful sun shine and birds chirping. The tree platform was perfect for when I needed to just soak the sun and relax. Be ready to sit back and just relax with while staying at the Eco Hale. Kaeo and Karl have done such a wonderful job putting this magical place together to share with the world! I plan to visit again in the future and I have no questions as to where I will be staying on my next trip to the Big Island! Aloha and Mahalo K2!

Paradise in the rainforest Very cute, extremely clean and cosy, fully furnished cottage set in tropical gardens. Kaeo was an exceptional hostess, providing many more amenities than expected-food, toiletries and even first aid supplies, reading materials and extensive info on the region... We didn't meet Karl but his handiwork was everywhere to enjoy. Their Eco Hale is an excellent base for visiting the Volcano Park and south of the island. We fully recommend this haven of peace!

You will love this jungle bungalow tucked in a tropical rainforest paradise! Built and cared for by Karl & Kaeo, this is the perfect way to escape and experience a truly serene Hawaiian vibe. Amazing attention to detail and wonderful personal touches make this a delightful retreat. You may arrive as strangers, but will part as friends. Mahalo nui loa to Kaeo and Karl for memories that will last a lifetime!

Kaeo was a spectacular host! You could literally come to the island with nothing, and she'd have everything you need! She was so nice and offering her computer when we needed it. She graciously handmade a small dinner for us, accommodating to our dietary needs. It was delicious. The native fruits too! Yum. This location of this place was literally in the middle of a rain forest. If you'd love to be close to the Volcano National Park and would like an authentic Hawaiian place to stay, this is perfect. It is a bit small if you have a ton of luggage, but luckily with the covered porch, we were able to set some of it outside. It did get a little humid in the room, so some airflow of a fan you could run for a while would be nice. She does live "off the grid" using solar panels and rain water, which is so fascinating. Keep that in mind with regards to running electricity and water though. You can really tell that she loves playing hostess. Out of all the places we stayed on the big island, even the Sheraton on Kauai, this was one of my favorite places to stay! Thank you again for everything.

I’ve stayed at AirBnBs all over the world and Kaeo and Karl’s place has been my favorite. Communication and check in was simple. The property is in the middle of the jungle with all kinds of fruit trees. They respected our privacy but were available if we had any questions. They have books and books and books of information about the island. The house is also full of things to use while you’re there (beach chairs, scuba gear, sunscreen etc). They were both so sweet and genuine. Definitely stay here if you have the chance!

Kaeo & Karl were incredible hosts and we LOVED Eco Hale! We were greeted by Kaeo who showed us around and had a delicious light meal prepared for us to enjoy. The hale was very private and we had the best view of the rainforest. It was so peaceful sleeping with the windows open listening to the frogs and rain. There was a gas burner and kettle that I used to make tea and sit on the patio each morning. Kaeo & Karl also have all kinds of equipment, flash lights, and recommendations available for your adventuring. We spent a day and a half at the Hawaii Volcano National Park, which was unbelievable! I would highly recommend going to the park and taking a ranger guided hike so you can get all kinds of recommendations about where to go and how to do it safely. One of the highlights of our trip was taking a bicycle ride and hike to see the active lava flows at dusk. The park is also open 24/7, so you can drive to the Jaggar Museum after dark to see the active gas-eruption at the Halema'uma'u crater.

We are so grateful Kaeo & Karl have opened the Eco Hale to us, and many other travelers! This place was a dream, such a wonderful little home to come back to to after a day of adventuring, and we would love to some day visit again. The details, and thoughtful touches were everywhere and a joy to find. Kaeo & Karl gave us the most thorough driving instructions, and welcomed us with open arms. Everything we could have needed on our stay was provided. Seriously, this hale is cozy, but it really has it all! Everything was perfectly thought out to make sure we weren't wanting for anything and completely comfortable - all the toiletries we could have ever needed were provided along with tons of snacks and home baked goodies to enjoy. The patio is an amazing place to sit with a hot drink and listen to the rain or relax with all the local plant life and at night, the animals of the forest sing you to sleep! Incredible all around!

Well where to begin! The drive up to the Eco Hale is very scenic, you drive past a very lush forest! Kaeo welcomed us with open arms (literally) and made us feel very welcome and at home. The cabin itself is on the smaller side but more than enough for 2 people. It was very clean and it was such great fun exploring the cabin! In every corner and niche there was something to look at or use! Sweats for when it gets cold + some fluffy socks, homemade banana bread and cookies, the fridge was full for breakfast, fresh fruit and a huge folder with activities! This place is absolutely lovely, truly a small gem! If you love peace and quiet this is it for you! If with a partner or friend, it was truly special! A big thank you to Kaeo and Karl for making us feel at home and being the lovely hosts they are! Mahalo Annie and Cindy

Kaeo was a great host she thought of everything from warm clothes to raincoats to treats. The space is a beautifully designed small cottage in a secluded lush garden. We were surprised how much it did rain - guess that is why it is so lush

Kano and Karl's place could be difficult to find, but they gave us great directions. I thought of the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse when I saw their place. It is in a very lush location complete with tangerine trees which they encourage you to enjoy. It is very compact, but they have thought of everything. Lots of thoughtful touches and notes telling us how to do things. They just installed a japanese bath outside where one can bathe and enjoy the tropical garden. Kaeo was very helpful when we had a problem connecting to our next airbnb. I would recommend their place to friends going to the Big Island. Lovely and peaceful. Very nice hosts who even made a birthday cake for my husband's 80th birthday! Fred and Linda

Decemb (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) Jan 1, (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) My husband and I flew into Kona and drove Saddle Road to Eco Hale in the dark after our flight. Kaeo's directions were clear and concise which we greatly appreciated having never been to the Island of Hawaii before. A complementary dinner was provided when we arrive which was homemade and delicious!! Kaeo also made a wonderful banana nut bread for us to enjoy as well! Sweets and treats were provided throughout our stay which helped make us feel welcome and at home. Unlocking/locking the gate to the property was not an inconvenience and helped us feel secure. Eco Hale is beautifully placed in the backyard of Karl and Kaeo's property which allowed for easy communication and quick response to requests. The position and distance between Kaeo and Karl's home from Eco Hale maintained privacy for me and my husband throughout our stay. The bathroom is separate from the bedroom and my husband and I felt comfortable going back and forth in the privacy of Eco Hale. We enjoyed waking up each morning to make French press coffee, hand squeezing fresh orange juice from the juicing oranges on the property, and eating fresh tangerines picked from the trees. The complementary breakfast and stocked mini fridge with juices, yogurt, were a wonderful plus!! Eco Hale is in the rain forrest side of the island which can make nights and mornings chilly in December. Kaeo and Karl provided a few extra sweatpants and blankets hanging up in the closet just incase of colder weather. This closet is filled with useful items! Kaeo and Karl have provided so many items we didn't think we needed. Binoculars, snorkel goggle de-fogger, flashlights, plenty of informational books, beach chairs, beach towels!! The property is gorgeous and filled with all kinds of plants and flowers lining the small trails and garden. The chirps and sounds of the rain forrest nightlife are mesmerizing. Soaking in the OFuro soaking tub was calming and soothing after a day of hiking in HVNP. Kaeo and Karl also encourage recycling and composting, which my husband and I loved!! The 1G wireless was a convenient but also kept cell phone use to minimum. My husband and I wanted a "no-phone-zone" so we used the wireless only to research our activities for the next day. The binder provided by Kaeo and Karl was extremely helpful and filled with information about activities to do in Hawaii, appliance guides, items provided in Eco Hale, and more!! We were off on so many adventures throughout the day that Kaeo provided a basket for us to fill for laundry! This was completely unexpected yet so appreciated!!! From Eco Hale my husband and I achieved so much in 5 days!! HVNP: Thurston Lava Tube, KilaueaIki Crater Trail, Chain of Craters, Holei Sea Arch, Hilo Farmers Market, drive to MaunaLoa (overlook was closed), Snorkeling at Richardson Ocean Park, Kaumana Caves (old lava tube), boogie boarding at the Summit of MaunaKea, eating at Pineapples,Ken's House of...

LOVED this place! The gardens are beautiful and the space felt relaxing, zen, clean, homey. Ww didn’t want to leave. Kaeo has put lots of thoughtful details into the space and it felt private but like we connected with her as well (through notes) :) great communication and wonderful authentic Hawaiian atmosphere. Comfortable bed and tasty fruits and snacks. We will be back one day!

Amazing! :) Don’t hesitate to book here with Kaeo and Karls Eco Hale! We loved feeling like we were in the middle of the jungle, being serenaded at night by the noises of nature. On top of that, the hosts go above and beyond with so many special touches! Couldn’t recommend this place enough!

Three things about Eco Hale made it a most extraordinary, adventurous yet peaceful experience. First, Mark and Karl have created a unique living space (cottage? Tiki hut...our nickname) that truly immerses you in the Hawaii rainforest. Absolute privacy with only the sights, sounds, feel and smells of the dense growth, birds and occasional rain showers. Nothing better than enjoying a leisurely breakfast of fresh picked frujt, Kaeo's home-baked sweet bread and freshly ground coffee on the open-air bar. Or capping an action-full day soaking in the Japanese Ofuro tub. Second, Eco Hale's location is perfect. A short drive from Hilo airport, Hawaii Volcanoes NP and the wild and beautiful Puna coast. In the course of our four days, we experienced: -- a full day exploring craters, lava flows, lava tubes capped off by a magnificent lava fountain courtesy of Kilauea's lava lake in the evening. -- dramatic coastal scenes on the island's eastern coast, ranging from desolate to serene -- active lava closing we witnessed in awe by hiking from Kalapana -- excellent dining in funky Paula Third, Kaeo's warm welcome and boundless hospitality is remarkable. Every possible activity, from snorkeling to Bird-watching to hanging at the beach, has been provided for. She is truly a sweet soul. Thank you, K&K! Mark & Sharon

We knew we were going to stay in a rain forest, but the week we were there was abnormally rainy. Kaeo had suggestions every day for things to do, places to go and where to eat. We enjoyed everything in spite of the rain. The coquis sang to us at night, Kaeo came over with freshly baked goods and fruit, the Hale was unique and well decorated with all kinds of fun things. I would definitely prefer this place to a high rise on the beach. I can't say enough about the hospitality here.

Staying at Kaeo and Karl's place was a amazing experience. If you're looking to 'get away from it all' in an exotic rain forest setting while still being close to all the attractions of Hilo, Volcano etc. this is the ideal choice. While the accommodation is relatively small it has everything you could need and more. On top of that, there's the little treats that appear now and then (cookies, chocolates, drinks etc.) even though there's a great selection of food waiting for you when you arrive. While Kaeo provides all of the privacy you could want, she also works in the background to ensure your stay is perfect (taking towels away to dry and responding to requests immediately). A couple of tips; the chirping frogs are all part of being in the rain forest but you might want to bring ear plugs if you're a light sleeper and make sure to check out the night sky while you're there, the number of stars you can see is breathtaking!

Eco Hale is a magical little gem hidden away in the rainforest. You hear the sounds of the native birds singing in the trees. You smell the fragrant smells of exotic plants, flowers and fruit trees. It is so very peaceful. A great place to refresh, get the best nights sleep and share a bit of romance with your special person. Kaeo is a warm and inviting hostess who has added so many special touches. Yummy breakfast items, home baked treats and plenty of fresh fruit. The location of Eco Hale is very convenient to all of the adventures awaiting you in the Volcanos area. Our first experience staying at an Airbnb was definitely a 10 out of 10!!

Kaeo and Karl's Eco Hale is hands down my best AirBNB experience to date. They are the most wonderful hosts who have put so much thought into the creation of the ultimate home away from home. The hale was easy to get to thanks to the detailed instructions that were sent to me ahead of time. Kaeo met me as I pulled in, proudly showed me around the hale, and welcomed me to contact her with any questions before she gracefully left me on my own. You do need to un/lock the gate to the drive as you come and go off the property but it is easy peasy. The hale itself is separated from the main house by lush greenery so I enjoyed having a lot of privacy and much-needed quiet. The pupu dinner I'd requested was divine, as were the fruit, cookies, and sweet bread that were also left for me to enjoy. The kitchen was perfectly appointed and I loved being able to cook myself breakfast out on the lanai while brewing coffee in a french press. The east side of the island was chillier than I expected and Kaeo graciously provided me an extra comforter and a cozy sweater to borrow. The bathroom is as adorable as one can be and is right next door to the bedroom, making for a lovely experience of a hybrid indoor/outdoor suite in the middle of the rainforest. My first night I took advantage of the Japanese soaking tub and meditated amid candlelight and the symphony of the coqui frogs. The bed was very comfy and I slept like a baby each night. I absolutely cannot wait to return to the Eco Hale and hopefully, will have more time to chat more with Kaeo, who is a dynamic and loving host. Mahalo nui loa, Kaeo and Karl, and much love to you from Seattle until we meet again!

Super cool eco cottage off the beaten path outside of Volcano National Park. If you are looking for seclusion, extra special touches to make you feel welcome, and just general relaxation, this is your spot. Really enjoyed it, and Kaeo was super helpful and responsive. Would definitely stay again! Aloha!!

The first thing we wanted to do when we arrived home from Hawaii was write this review for Kaeo and Karl's magical Eco Hale.   We stayed in many different places throughout Big Island & Maui but we are so grateful that Eco Hale was our first experience with Hawaii.  Kaeo and Karl are right when they say Eco Hale is "True Aloha".  The setting is peaceful, thoughtful and inspiring with it's lush gardens, singing coqui and a house off the grid that feels more luxurious than our house on the east coast :)  But it's Kaeo and Karl's kind and generous spirit that really makes this Air BNB a home.  In all of our years of traveling and staying in various home shares, never have we felt so welcome.  Kaeo and Karl are the true definition of gracious hosts and allowed us to see what the Hawaiian warmth is really about.  We left Eco Hale with a renewed appreciation for the rain forest, for sustainable living and human kind.  Although Kaeo and Karl are very descriptive and clear about Eco Hale, you need to stay there to truly appreciate the beauty of this place.  If we could give Eco Hale 10 stars, we would :)  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

This is one of the best AirBNBs I've ever stayed at. Kaeo has thought of everything you could possibly need, from sunscreen and bugspray to snorkels and a cooler. I loved how isolated this place felt, in the middle of a tropical garden with coqui frogs singing. It was very special to have this even after having been at a crowded tourist spot earlier in the day. Definitely my preference over crowded resort spots by a long shot! We are lucky places like this exist, and that people like Kaeo and Karl share them with us. This made our anniversary (and engagement!) very special. I especially loved how they compost, and that everything was off the grid solar! Very cool for these Portland environmentalists. Literally the only cons I can come up with: there's a lot of moisture (I mean, you're in a rainforest), so towels practically never dried and I woke up feeling damp at night. I don't think there's much to be done about that, just be aware. Also, the toilet paper could've been better. Haha see how trivial those are? Stay here!

Kaeo was so welcoming, and was there to meet us upon arrival. They shared fresh fruit with us from their trees that was delightful to say the least. Cooking on the patio made me wish I could do it everyday. Huge thanks for sharing this space

5 starts does not do Eco Hale justice. I arrived well into the night and was greeted by Kaeo who gave me a tour of home. Beautiful setting - surrounded by a tropical garden and coqui singing me to sleep. Such attention to detail - including fresh flowers in the AM, sweets and treats in nooks and crannies of the room, and a binder full of ideas/guides/maps for local activities. The Japanese bath was much appreciated after long hikes! As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe and well taken care of. Staying at Eco Hale was an enriching experience in itself. I am looking forward to my next visit :)

This is a magical place. Imagine sitting on a deck outside, taking a soak while being serenaded by the rainforest frogs. The eco hale is beautifully decorated with many special touches. Kaeo & Karl have considered everything. From check in to check out and all points in between, you can be certain they’ve thought of it. We came in late at night and while navigating the dark back roads can be a little tricky, their directions have plenty of physical markers to get you there safely. Just be aware, this area is a bit more isolated (about 20m south of Hilo) with spotty cell service, which for us was part of the appeal. But is something to consider when organizing points of interest. Even though it’s isolated with tons of flowers, lush trees, and plants, we were PLEASANTLY surprised by the lack of bugs. I mean sure there’s mosquitos and the occasional beetle looking thing but we didn’t see much more then that. And overall build quality is incredible! It was pouring rain a good duration of the time we were there and not a single drop or leak was anywhere to be found. Oh and talk about treats and thoughtful touches galore! There was a welcoming meal of lasagna, shrimp Cesar salad, and even a gift since my bday had been a few days prior. There’s so much more I’d love to share but it still wouldn’t do Eco Hale justice. This adorable little suite is the perfect jungle paradise with truly welcoming, kind, and generous hosts. We couldn’t have asked for more or better.

This magical rainforest getaway is truly a unique experience, with just enough room for 2 people. We wanted to stay away from urban settings and be immersed in the nature, and this place was the perfect recipe of cozy and comfortable in the most gorgeous setting. You are truly IN the forest so expect a lot of rain, but also surrounded by beautiful flora and fauna. Kaeo was an incredible host and provided tons of fresh fruit + breakfast choices + snacks. My absolute favorite part was the outdoor tub which we used sometimes twice a day, it was sooo relaxing. Overall 5 stars and highly recommended.

Very peaceful, very well set up, and very clean. The jungle sounds helped put you to sleep. A great set up for cooking light meals and making coffee to enjoy on the deck. Many little extras, chocolate, banana bread, fruits and complimentary foods to cook a quick meal.

Dear Kaeo and Karl Thank you for taking such great care for us and making memories to last a lifetime. We were unsure of what to expect but everything in the Eco Hale was way beyond our expectations. We solely booked the place based on recommendations of others on this forum, and would recommend the same of others browsing your field without blinking an eye. Everything in the house and amenity had a special touch and thought behind it. We were so glad that the kitchen was fully equipped that gave us chance to cook with local ingredients. Your blueberry pie and croissant was simply out of the world! And oh, thanks for sharing the fruits from your backyard. The smoothie we made with it would put Whole Foods to shame. Every day, we came back to some or the other item and recommendations with special touch by you. We could not wait to get up in the morning and experience the early sunshine, do yoga and enjoy freshly brewed coffees. The space was incredibly clean and spacious for our needs. Thanks for sharing your local recommendations that made our trip extremely fruitful. Saying "thank you" is an understatement for the experience and memories we made. Mahalo! Divya & Warren

Where to start with how amazing the Eco Hale was? Kaeo went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable - and keep us well stocked with homemade snacks. From chocolates in the room to snorkel gear available to coupons and local information about the volcano, we couldn't have been better prepared for a fantastic time. We absolutely loved how remote and secluded the property was, which made taking an outdoor bath a huge treat. This was vacation and hospitality at its finest!

We had a wonderful stay at Kaeo and Karl's beautiful Eco Hale in Hawaii. The Hale is surrounded by the most gorgeous plants and we especially loved the sounds of the tree frogs in the evenings. Kaeo and Karl have thought of everything to make your stay extra special. From the yummy treats they leave you to the slippers and cozy blankets, you are truly spoilt in their space. The Hale is very private in its own space tucked away from the main road. Additionally, Kaeo is a lovely host and was pure joy to be around. We enjoyed the conversations we had with her while we were there and were impressed with her responsiveness through airbnb before we even arrived. I would highly recommend staying at the lovely Eco Hale for your trip to Hawaii. It is a unique experience and one we will remember forever. A huge thanks to Kaeo and Karl for their warm hospitality and unwavering kindness.

The Eco Hale is truly a rainforest paradise, but please keep in mind that this Airbnb is for the outdoorsy type (those who are okay contending with bugs, rain, limited electricity and a long bumpy driveway). To us, these drawbacks were minimal, as the rest of the experience was marvelous. Kaeo and Karl made sure that we had enough food for breakfast and snacks, and also greeted us with a lovely light meal and bottle of wine. They were both very knowledgeable and helped ease our worries about the recent Kilauea eruption and lava flows. They also have many resources and amenities available for use including, flashlights, binoculars, beach towels, sunscreen, bug spray, slippers, guidebooks/pamphlets. Overall, we could not recommend the Eco Hale enough. P.S. Make sure to take advantage of their lovely Japanese soaking tub. It's an incredible experience using it in the evening among the sounds of the rain forest. Enjoy!

What a treat! Upon arrival we were greated by our fabulous host Kaeo who showed us around and made us feel welcome. The property is beautiful and very private. We loved the meal she provided and all the snacks! Such a lovely space to relax and unplug although you do have wifi if you need it. They definitely make an effort to address any necessities you may have. My favorite was the soaking tub! Thanks for your hospitality and extra aloha Kx2. Mahalo, Danyel and Jonathan

There is literally nothing that I can say that was bad about this place. This has been my FAVORITE place to stay. The location is already a beautiful getaway. Their hospitality went above and beyond my expectations. They provided us with fresh fruit, delicious snacks and even a small dinner when we first arrived. Kaeo even remembered that I was lactose intolerant and provided me with oat milk in the fridge. She was super accommodating when it came to being a later check-in as well. We went to bed to the sound of tree frogs every night and complete quiet. The whole area was gorgeous including all the cute decorations around the house. The shower was hot and they provided shampoo and body wash, which was great! If we come back to Hawaii, we will absolutely stay here again. Mahalo!

I could say this again and again, from the deepest depths of our hearts, mahalo nui loa. From the moment we met, it felt like being welcomed by “auntie K” rather than just a host. Eco hale and the memories shared will forever hold a special place in our hearts. I could list off all the incredible personal touches and onolicious grinds, but what stands out the most is the love and care that exudes every lush nook and cranny of eco hale. You definitely made our first trip to Hawaii as a couple a memorable one. With love and aloha, Jade & Josh

Eco Hale was amazing! My partner and I fell in love with the place immediately. There’s nothing like being in the middle of a rain forest, with just the sounds of birds, gentle rain, and the otherworldly sounds of coqui frogs chirping at night. It was so calming, relaxing, soothing. A switch goes off in your brain when being there. I wanted to spend as much time as possible there just soaking it in. It’s definitely off the beaten path. After you leave the main highway, it’s still a long ways in. But of course this is why it’s so remote and quiet. We barely noticed the main house where Kaeo and Karl live because the property is so lush. Kaeo gave us a quick tour and some instructions on how to use the furo, stove, etc. and then left us alone to enjoy our little slice of paradise. Over the next three days we communicated by text message and handwritten notes, and Kaeo would leave us the most ono (delicious) homemade goodies every day. This was on top of a well-stocked mini fridge and a full water dispenser, and many other amenities. Kaeo and Karl thought of everything, and then some. I am a Hawaii resident and have been to the Big Island dozens of times. My main advice is, don’t try to see all of Hawaii Island in one trip. Eco Hale is a great location from which to see the volcano area, the small towns in Puna, Hilo, and on up to the middle of the Hamakua Coast. We also did Mauna Kea as a day trip (staying until sunset). The driving distances on the Big Island are so great that you do not want to cram too much into a few days, since you would just spend most of your time driving and not nearly enough time enjoying the island lifestyle. At Eco Hale the temperature at night was cool, and between the cool air and the coqui frogs, I slept like a baby. Coqui frogs are controversial in Hawaii. They were introduced and they spread quickly on Hawaii Island. Some people are bothered by their chirping, but I’m not one of them. It just made it feel more like were in some exotic place in a rainforest. The feeling reminded me of my travels years ago, when I stayed in off-the-beaten-path places in Bali and Thailand, where the pace of life is so much slower. In short, this has been our favorite AirBnb!

There just are not words to describe how incredible Kaeo & Karl's place is! We thoroughly enjoyed every minute we spent there. There are so many small touches that make it feel extra special, and there is nothing that you need that they don't have! We rode out Hurricane Hector's rains and winds that came through but it somehow made their place even more magical. (And they kept us up to date on the current weather and path prediction during the hurricane watch). The rain on the roof and the thunder rumbling in the distance while soaking in the tub waiting for the first frogs to start singing us into the night is one of my favorite memories I have from our Hawaiian Honeymoon. All of the fruits, flowers and baked goods were the most wonderful little surprises. We WILL return once HVNP is reopened (we booked before the eruption) to enjoy some hiking and to be serenaded to sleep by the rain and frogs.

The place is beautifully decorated and I really enjoyed the bird's concerts at night. I wasn't happy though, that the price shown in the ad was not realiable. In the ad the price was 76 $ and it said that prices vary, so I paid 110 $ for one night. With the description how to get to the place another fee (15% tax on total price) came up that hadn't been mentioned anywhere in the ad (I checked the ad several times). So the price for the room was actually 125 $, which is close to double from advertised. It is also very far from Hilo, it takes a 40-min-ride to get there, so I can only recommend it, if you want to enjoy the jungle sounds.

Amazing and cozy space. A beautiful garden in the back with lots of interesting plants and hideaways to discover. At night frogs serenade you to sleep and the stars are amazing. This was our third time on The Big Island, and we were looking for a new adventure, we had never stayed in the rainforest and eco hale looked like our perfect Tao place. Our hosts Kaeo and Karl were awesome. Kaeo greeted us with a Big Aloha and Hug upon arrival. Awaiting us in the fridge was a delicious plate filled with abundant shrimp , avocado, coleslaw, fruit and other yummies. Fresh apple bananas as well as papaya was a part of our morning breakfast. There were so many extras provided such as beach chairs, a cooler, snorkeling equipment and even clothing and slippers. The Japanese soaking tub was truly delightful and gazing into the surrounding foliage was mesmerizing. The house was clean and comfy and our hosts were available when needed but respected our privacy. We highly recommend staying at the eco hale for a truly unique experience. Now go book your stay!! Made the beginning of our trip amazing, very much made us feel like we had a home away from home. Would recommend this stay to anyone!

This is an AMAZING space! It is a true labor of love and you get a real sense of the pride they have for this place. There were fresh flowers everywhere, BESIDES being in the middle of a rainforest garden! Kaeo prepared a delicious meal for our first night at their place, asking ahead of time what we like and could or couldn't have. Her communication with stellar! The whole place was very quaint and fun. The bathroom is not attached to the bedroom, so you have go outside to get to it, but it is three steps away and the place is COMPLETELY ISOLATED and private, so you can move back and forth in your PJs, a towel, or nothing at all without being seen by anyone. The towels were thick, the bed was comfortable, the space immaculate. The outdoor area was super inviting. We didn't use the outdoor tub because we were always gone in the evening during the hours it is able to be used, but I thought it was an incredibly cool option. The space is near Volcano National Park, not too far from the fabulous Botanical Gardens, and you MUST check out the coffee place a couple miles down the main highway toward Hilo! The coffee is great and the folks are very nice. Say "hi" to Destiny for us! (She is a young women that recognized us when we returned the second day for more coffee.) We had two concerns; the space was quite small. We have the type of suitcases that have to be laid flat to find anything and we could not open both suitcases at the same time. This seemed like a big deal the first day, but we grew used to it. (There is space outside on the porch for a suitcase, but didn't want to have to do that everyday.) If you are into little spaces or are flexible, you will think this is a very small deal. We just got a little claustrophobic about it. The second thing (and I apologize I didn't say something to Kaeo about this in person) is the shower temperature fluctuates greatly. I spent more time in the shower waiting for the water to get to a reasonable temperature than I did showering. (And I'm not too picky about the temperature.

Our stay with Kaeo and Karl was nothing short of magical. The directions that we were provided with were spot on, we were greeted upon arrival and instantly felt welcome. The accommodation itself was completely stunning, perfect rainforest setting. Our lovely hosts respected our privacy while at the same time taking amazing care of us by leaving us notes and treats. The outdoor Japanese soaking tub with the sound of the rain and forest creatures surrounding was the icing on top of the cake. Would recommend this place to anybody who is looking for a trip to remember

Our stay at Eco Hale was magical! Everything we needed in a secluded rainforest cottage. We enjoyed eating papayas on the porch each morning, provided by Kaeo. It was great to have snorkel gear and boogie boards available too!

This place was magical and the little touches and special treats were above and beyond anything we expected. We absolutely loved staying here and loved being on this side of the island. If we ever come back without our children again we will definitely stay here again.

This was the most amazing experience I’ve ever had with an Airbnb superhost. The place is phenomenal and being in the jungle among the beautiful sounds of nature and surrounded by lush green trees and plants was breathtaking. Kaeo & Karl were the most amazing hosts although we didn’t meet Karl. We were greeted by Kaeo at the start of our trip and she was the sweetest person ever. Every evening we came home to treats and notes and a beautiful sanctuary. I highly recommend this location for part if not all of your Hawaii getaway. I will definitely be back and can’t thank Kaeo & Karl enough for opening this place for travelers, vacationer and adventure seekers like ourselves. XO AJ & Alicia.

We perfectely enjoyed our stay at Kaeo's and Karl's place! We were so happy about the lovely details and Kaeo's hospitable character. If somebody plans to visit the East or South of Big Island is this the place to stay at. We felt very, very good there. The best hosts we/I have ever me!

Don't hesitate to stay at this clean, sunny cabin surrounded by nature and teeming with personal touches! We were in awe of the life Kaeo and Karl had made for themselves, and so honored that they would share a bit of it through this eco-friendly space. We looked forward to relaxing there, listening to frogs and drinking chai tea every afternoon. And marveled at the fact that before we knew we needed something (house shoes, sweats, coffee and fresh fruit) it was already in the cabin. Thank you for being amazing hosts!!

Kaeo is the most lovely host with all the nice treats she spoilt us with. The Eco Hale is very nice, it was just so much driving to get anywhere, we kind of underestimated the distances (so not the hosts fault at all!). For nature-lovers it is just the perfect place to stay and relax.

An amazing hale! We loved the combination of complete privacy and total luxury. The hale is so well designed and provisioned, it is a self-contained space where anyone can find the peace they are looking for. Some of the highlights of our trip were waking up with the sun, reading in bed, after a long day of adventuring, and (finally) dozing off to the sounds of the coquis. Mahalo, Annie & Henry

Look no further, this is the spot if you want to stay near Hilo. As avid travelers, my wife and I have seen it all and this place takes the cake. Amazing atmosphere, impeccable service, and the perfect combination of privacy and comfort. Kaeo thinks of everything, and has a massive binder of hot spots and recommendation. The binder also has a impressive array of history to review and enjoy. 10 out of 10 does not due this place enough justice. JUST HIT “BOOK NOW” AND SIT BACK AND RELAX.

Great space with great hosts! The space is surrounded by a rain forest garden, complete with flowers and birds everywhere. Highly recommended as a couples retreat as its very private and romantic. Even the bathroom has a great view! We enjoyed using the patio space as our outside living room to enjoy the pupus (appetizer/snacks) provided by the gracious hosts. The space includes everything you could ask for or forgot to pack (snorkel gear, beach items, phone charger, snacks, coffee, the list goes on). We would stay here again in a heartbeat when visiting Volcano National Park and Hilo.

Beautiful place! Kaeo and Karl have created a true oasis in the rainforest. Perfect place to relax and connect with nature, but still not very far to volcanoes national park, grocery stores, and dining options. Kaeo and Karl went above and beyond to make sure our experience was perfect, leaving us delicious snacks every day and fresh towels. 100% recommend!

Keao and Karl make it possible to actually live that classic Airbnb dream of “living like a local” - the eco-hale is adjacent to their actual home, both of which are situated in expansive, beautifully curated rainforest grounds. The hospitality they show should also be the gold standard for Airbnb hosts - from cooking us an arrival dinner to surprising us with a Christmas gift on Dec 25, they really care about making their guests feel at home in every way possible. My only advice would be to consider before booking if you are comfortable with a certain degree of ruggedness. The fact that this eco-hale is in the rainforest means it’s more often than not heavily raining, and the Airbnb receives a number of insects which are harmless but can be annoying when they swarm around you nonetheless. It’s location is also very remote, which lends to its beauty, but also makes it scary driving home on a road with no lights past sunset. That being said, these are only minor comments that I feel should be shared with future guests when booking. We had a great time.

Stay here! We spent our honeymoon at Eco Hale, and it was so peaceful and perfect. Kaeo and Karl have thought of everything you could need or want. We particularly enjoyed the yummy food, soaking tub, and sound of the rainforest at night.

Definitely recommend staying here on your trip to Hawaii! Kaeo was amazingly helpful and kind during our check-in! Eco hale exceeded all our expectations, with lovely and welcoming decorations that capture the spirit of Hawaii and that made you feel right at home. We loved eating breakfast out on the deck, listening to the sounds of the rainforest - there was a kettle for our tea, a stove to make eggs, etc. We loved the little details, from the slippers to the banana bread to the container of quotes and daily reflections. Very close to the Volcanoes National Park and various beaches, which we had a lot of fun exploring.

Kaeo and Karl's place is the perfect little place to get to relax and unwind after a day out and about on the island. Or it's perfect to just spend the day there. They thought of everything and did so much that they didn't need to, I found myself the most impressed with not only how lovely the place is, but the simple touches that they thought of, in order to make absolutely sure that your stay is as close to perfect as possible. I wish it was closer to where I live, because I would go just to stay with them again. Kind hospitality and an adorable little oasis to enjoy the company of a loved one. I cannot give high enough praise to our experience, it was a genuine delight.

A little bit of paradise! Our stay in Kaeo and Karl’s Eco Hale was amazing. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city we found ourselves completely immersed in the beauty of Hawaii. Kaeo greeted us with a warm smile and a hug and made us feel like Ohana from the very beginning. Throughout the entire eco hale were small little touches and amenities that really added to the overall experience. From the fresh fruit and pupus to the home made banana walnut bread. Kaeo and Karl have literally thought of everything. Thank you for making our birthday trip special and we hope to stay with you again on our next trip to the big island!

Lovely little ecolodge in the deep rainforest where you can see the stars and listen to the frogs at night. Adoring spiritual aloha with very thoughtfull personal touch. Lemon- and orange trees, colourfull flowers and lush rainforest will welcome you.

Mahalo
