Neighborhood Overview

While our mailing address is Captain Cook, our home is actually located in a rural setting within the village of Kealia, which is the center of a large cattle ranch. There is nothing between us and the ocean but the ranch land comprised mostly of tropical forest. While we have neighbors on both sides, Hale Honu is very private with many plantings and trees on the property lines. We are mid-way between Hookena Beach State Park to the south, and Place of Refuge National Historic Park to the north, which is adjacent to "Two Step," one of the best snorkeling locations on the Big Island. The Hookena Beach bay area is also the play ground and resting place for a pod of dolphins that are often seen during early mornings or evenings. It is a ten minute drive to either of these locations, and a short walk to a small convenience store in the central village. We are 70 miles from Volcano National Park - a 90 minute drive of spectacular scenery.

Notes

There is a land telephone line available for local use and toll-free numbers but calling cards are needed to place long distance calls. The quality of cell phone access depends on the provider. We use Verizon but that service is often not as firm as we would like. Our Wi-Fi service is through Hawaiian Telcom.

Transit

Hale Honu is 20 miles south of Kailua-Kona and 27 miles from the Kona International Airport. A rental car is essential.

Access

A key to the front door is located in a coded lock box adjacent to the front door. This is a fully functioning home located on a half acre of tropical garden including fruit trees (papaya, mango, avocado and tangerine when in season). Pine-apples are also available for guests to harvest when ripe.

We had a fantastic time staying at the turtle house this summer. Wonderful location south of the bustle of Kona and easy access to Volcanoes National Park and 2 Step for some of the best outdoor jaunts this side of the island. House comfortably accommodated several couples while still giving us all space to spread our mountains of stuff everywhere, and the beach umbrellas were a great find! We would love to stay again and look forward to our next visit to Hawai'i.

Very comfortable, spacious and welcoming house. Was located conveniently right off the 11 hwy, but was not noisy at all - well, except the frogs, but that was delightful. Kitchen well stocked with basics and easy to use appliances. Fantastic lanai with friendly geckos joining us at breakfast. Would definitely recommend this for a base for both the ocean and Volcanos NP. Go to Two Step snorkeling on your first day as you will want to return over and over again. We enjoyed the lack of A/C as we were tired of it from previous hotels. No complaints whatsoever.

This house was a break from the hustle and bustle of the touristy settings normally found in Hawaii. Robert gave great information about the surrounding area and things to do, grocery shopping, and suggestions about places to eat. It is located near amenities and recreation spots and only about 2 hours from Volcano National Park. The place was roomy with comfortable sleeping for 4 plus more available spots in the rest of the house.

Great location: convenient for the entire western side of the Island from South Point to Kohala beaches, without any of the crowds. Very close to Kealakekua Bay, Pu'uhonua O Honaunau, and Ho'okena beach. On the highway but set back enough to be quiet, especially on the large lanai facing the ocean. Very large space for the money and well-equipped: kitchen has everything you need, there is a good selection of books about Hawai'i in the bookshelf, and beach chairs, mats, boogie boards, etc. for you to use. Best tech (wi-fi and TV) of any of the places we stayed on our trip. If you are looking for the latest decor trends, this is not the place for you, but for a well-priced base for a family, Hale Honu would be good bet.

This is an excellent place. Very private. Loved seeing the pigs and cattle in the field and listening to the coqui frogs that serenaded us each night. The ocean view is amazing and the lanai was perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring. Will definitely stay there again.

The place is very secluded from the usual touristy Kona Coast. With that you definitely will drive more to get to anything, but it’s convenient to the south end of the island. The coqui frogs definitely are something you’ll adjust to liking, but be aware it’s definitely noticeable at night (the frogs). If your looking for a large cottage like house near Captain Cook, look no further, plenty of room and plenty of nature.

Hale Hona was like home away from home. It has everything you need to enjoy and explore the island. We really enjoyed the lanai for meals and outdoor time at the house. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped for all our cooking needs. The house is located outside the busyness of Kona but close enough for an easy drive to the shops there and that much closer to the south to the beaches and volcano park. There are also a number of beaches close by, each unique in its own way. Two step beach has amazing snorkelling that we wish we had discovered the first day so we could have gone back every day of our trip. We had a great stay and wish we could have stayed longer.

Robert is a nice host. However, you have to be aware that many, many lizards live in the house. You have to be ok with cohabitating with them and all that it entails (general cleanliness is affected, especially with carpeting).

We loved how it was away from the tourist areas but we were still so close to everything. Robert was super helpful and gave us thoughts of ideas to do and fun things to explore with the kids. As well as where to shop. Very helpful since we’ve never been here before. We loved the home, it felt homie & the geckos were super fun to watch!!!! Thank you!

Hale Honu was the perfect vacation home for us. It was very spacious and well equipped for meals and day tripping. Very convenient to many good swimming and snorkelling beaches and villages for local shopping. It was away from the touristy part of Kona and felt very relaxing. It was special having that great view from the lanai every day, reminding us of the paradise we were visiting. Robert and Nancy's remarks and guidance were spot on and very helpful. We did not have one incident with the house in our 2 week visit. Thanks so much the our hosts for making our visit so fantastic and memorable!

Hale Honu was perfect for our stay on the Kailua-Kona side of the island. We greatly appreciated the fully stocked kitchen (particularly the coffee grinder for our Kona Joe’s coffee), snorkel/beach gear, laundry, and local recommendations, and the location was close to all the best snorkeling on the island! I wasn’t stoked about the gecko that dropped on my head during breakfast on the lanai, but the rest of my group was extremely entertained. Robert was super quick to respond to any questions we had (which were few because he provided us with all the info we could possibly need beforehand), and I even got a sweet Christmas card and Hawaii calendar prior to our trip! Highly recommend!
