Neighborhood Overview

Tarlabasi neighborhood was a middle class Greek neighbourhood when it was founded at the beginning of 19th century. The area is full of houses of eclectic Ottoman liberty style buildings and ours is one of them. By the 1950’s most of the greek population of the area had to immigrate to Greece because of political reasons. The area was deserted and by the 1980’s got an internal immigration from the east part of Turkey mostly of Kurdish origin. In the neighbourhood very few Istanbulite Greeks remained, there is a big Kurdish community of rural origin, a gypsy community that settled down many years ago and work in the area as musicians, many transgender people, poor families from the East and the Balck Sea coast, expats who fell in love with decadent touch and reasonable prices of the area, young artists, old artists, students, and us. We, in our extent, fell in love with the building and liked the spirit of the area that welcomes all the outsiders of the town. It is the gilded area in

I stayed with Fatma for many weeks in December 2013, in the attic room on my own, and then with my boyfriend in the larger double room, and had an amazing time. The neighbourhood, Tarlabaşı, is different and more down to earth than the posher neighbourhoods around. The location is wonderful: it's easy to get anywhere by foot, taxi, bus, dolmus, metro or boat. Fatma, who lives there, and her daughter Elvan, who lives in Italy but is quick to communicate by email, are extremely friendly and helpful. Fatma also cooks wonderfully and even offers cooking classes. I would definitely recommend staying there, for three nights or three months, and hope to stay there again myself. Be aware though that if you have respiratory issues, this might not be a good choice as there is a fair amount of smoking happening inside, and even the neighbourhood is quite smoky because of the coal heating.

The perfect visit. For me, this attic room in Beyoglu was perfect for my time in Istanbul. My hosts were wonderful, the room is great, the terrace is greater, and the location is fantastic. I was in Istanbul for a intensive summer school at their Technology University, and got the privacy, space and support I needed to get everything done, and to a high standard. I was sad to leave and am looking forward to returning again in a few months. Thank you thank you thank you, and will miss you guys! Beau x

Fatma, Elvan, her daughter, Hasan, her husband, and all of the other guests with whom I shared the house made this one of my best travel experiences. Fatma really tries to make everyone at home in her home and in her city. We shared dinner on the terrace several times with her past guests / friends, and they made me feel so welcome and quickly become knowledgable about Istanbul and the broader society. The room, itself, and the neighborhood have been correctly detailed in the room information, guest feedback, and the feedback for Fatma's other rooms' feedback. I encourage you to read them all to get a clear idea. All said, the room is good value for money, and the people will make it a fond, memorable experience.

I stayed for one month in the attic room and was very pleased with how everything turned out. Fatma and Hasan are very welcoming, and I have many good memories of my stay (like drinking raki and talking about Turkish music with Hasan at the dinner table). If you stay here you will meet many interesting people from Turkey and around the world passing through the house. The area will not be to every ones tastes, but I highly recommend it for the more adventurous among you.

Thank you Fatima and family for a wonderful time in Istanbul! I love your house, my attic room which is very central and from where I was able to walk to all sites in Istanbul. You, your husband and daughter, all were very welcoming and helpful. I definitely want to come back.

Fatma and Hasan, the hosts, are truly some of the nicest people I've had the chance to come across. I stayed for 3 months and loved every second of it, only regretting that I could not stay for another three. The landlords are fantastic and experienced Airbnb hosts, which makes the experienced that much better. Fatma is an outstanding cook, and one should not miss a chance to dine with her and Hasan! The house is great, very typical and nice - as a bonus, the bathrooms were all renovated and they look fantastic. The terrace made for many evenings relaxing away from the hustle and bustle of Istiklal St. In terms of location, the house is in a great spot: seconds away from Istiklal, minutes from Taksim and the cool Cihangir area, and a short train ride or longer walk to Sultanahmet, Topkapi and all the tourist sites. Would recommend without any hesitation, as I already did to two friends of mine who also stayed at Fatma and Hasan's house.

I spent a really nice month at Fatma's house. The room is lovely and fits the description. I also really enjoyed the beautiful terrasse from where you can watch the neighborhood. I thought the house was in an ideal location to explore the city. The street where the house is on is pretty calm. This room is on the same floor with the terrasse and the kitchen, so you have ideal access to both of them. The kitchen is ideal if you just want to cook something small from time to time as there's only one cooking plate. This room is perfect for people that wish to be in contact with the host and exchange with them from time to time as you walk by their living room and kitchen as well as share the bathroom with them. If you rather be a little more to your own and mind cigarette smoke, I recommend one of the other rooms. Fatma and Hasan are both very very nice, always asked about my day and they were very patient when I tried to say something in turkish. I hope that my turkish will be better one day so that we can have longer and deeper conversations! They made me feel very welcomed and I also really enjoyed meeting Fatma's daughter and grandson! They are very generous, sometimes invited me for tea or something to eat. I also got lucky to taste some of Fatma's amazing food!

It was fantastic to stay at the house of Fatma and Hasan! The room is very nice, like you can see on the pictures. Next to the room is the kitchen and the terasse, which is great. The bathroom of which you can´t see picture was aesthtic too. Particularly if you are in Istanbul because of learning Turkish Fatma and Hasan´s house will be the best choice as both are very communicative and patiant with beginners. Above all Fatma and Hasan are such nice people, I am really looking forward to stay in contact with them. I highly recommend the room. But you should have no problem with shareing the bathroom with the hosts as well as shareing the kitchen and the terasse with a lot of other guests who stay in the house. But that´s why the attic room is the best one for people who want interact with the hosts and get to know other guests. I also loved the neighbourhood.

Fatma and Hasan are wonderful hosts, warm, welcoming and very hospitable. The room is just as describe. Central location, easy to get around by foot or public transportation, grocery stores and lots of dining options at your finger tips, can't be beat.

I really enjoyed staying at Fatma and Hasan's. They were incredibly sweet and welcoming, it almost felt like staying with my aunt and uncle. I was alone with Hasan for the most part as Fatma was out of town. During that time he always made sure I'd get home safe at night. I thought that was very endearing. The room itself is super cute, with its own kitchen and terrace access, which I tremendously enjoyed as it gave me the sense of having an entire apartment. The neighbourhood is a bit off the tourist track but for that reason very charming. And it still is very close to Istiqlal, essentially just across the street. So you are strategically located.

A wonderful journey at Fatma and Hasan's house !! So pleasant place, clean, very very well located, lot of plants on the terrace... But above all, amazing and great people live here ! Fatma and Hasan are so welcoming and warm, it was a real pleasure for me to spend time with them. I definitely recommend this place, and hope to come back as soon as possible !

Fatma and Hassan are wonderful and caring hosts. I accompanied Hassan to work and he showed me his favourite breakfast stops; I also had a lovely few hours drinking tea with both of them chatting Turkish recipes. The room was just what I had hoped for with a lovely terrace just outside it. I will be back!

Friendly place, quit no noise, clean. I stayed in the attic had amazing view of the neighbourhood. Owners are friendly. Only complain is that the bed might have bed bugs. I got eaten all over and started to notice it the third day in.

Fatma and Hassan are very gentle and kind - a beautiful couple. Their hospitality is genuine. Their home becomes your home. They engage in conversation but also respect your privacy. The attic room was an excellent option - it's very private, clean, warm in winter, quiet at night with beautiful pieces of furniture. The neighbourhood is secure. I want to return to Fatma and Hassan's home for a longer stay.

I made the reservation for my son who was in Istanbul for a week and decided to stay in different parts of the city to see as much of it as possible. His comments: "The home, in a popular area of Taksim, is in a great central location. I was able to see a non-touristy side of Istanbul. Fatma and Hassan were both INCREDIBLY WELCOMING AND GRACIOUS HOSTS." My son also took a cooking lesson, which he loved. Thank you!

You will find a very cute and warm home with two lovely people. They are always up for a cup of Turkish tea and a chat. They know İstanbul well, so they can also give you some insider tips. The house itself is very clean and the roof terrace is nice.

This place is wonderful. Fatma and her husband are very friendly and helpful with local tips. The place is totally central, walkable to all the tourist stuff but still located a bit off the beaten track. The WiFi signal is strong. The neighborhood is bustling 24 hours a day and I always felt safe. Communication was easy and quick. In fact, I liked it so much here I extend my stay :) I 1,000% recommend this place for your trip to Istanbul!

Fatma’s room is lovely - it’s in the attic and has its own mini kitchenette and a beautiful terrace with a table. It’s in a slightly rougher area than I expected but it was really interesting to see another side to Istanbul. Fatma and her husband’s hosting was also fantastic - they were consistently so kind and offered me food and told me to come back and say hi as I was still in Istanbul after my check out. Would definitely recommend.

Best place in Istanbul!! I stayed there for 2 months, and will come back whenever I can. Hasan and Fatma will make you feel at home, while giving you the space to have your own life. The room upstairs is great because it is opposite the terrace, where I spent many evenings having tea and working or reading, and had coffee in the morning... The neighborhood is interesting, has an unjustified reputation as it is very animated at all times of day and night but this should not discourage guests, it is very safe: I'm a 22 year old woman, and was able to come back at any time of the day/night and everything was absolutely fine. Don't hesitate to ask questions, Hasan and Fatma are super helpful!

My trip wouldn't have been as amazing without the generous and thoughtful help of Fatma and Hassan. Not only did they have a great place, they helped me to move around the city and gave me tons of great recommendations, not to mention a nice conversation with a cup of tea every other day. Highly recommended, will definitely be staying here again!

I was really happy with the flat and enjoyed to stay there for some days. For me the flat is located near interesting spots like Galata Tower, taksim, shopping streets and so on. I just walked about 20 minutes to Galata bridge and here you are in Sultanahmet Fatma and Hasan were helpful and friendly. And Hasan makes the best Turkish tea I have ever drank thank you.

Fatima and her husband are beautiful hosts, and were very nice. The neighborhood has an unsafe feel to it, and I established a buddy system with a fellow traveller to walk back together at night- but it was completely fine and nothing happened to us. Also, if you have allergies to smoke or dont like being around smokers- this place is not for you. The smell of smoke wafts up and the room smells of it all the time. Other than that, location is very convenient in terms of transportation and main tourist attractions. Thanks Fatima and Co!

Fatma's house is a great place to stay. Walking distance to Taksim Square and restaurants and nightlife in Beyoglu. The house is clean and well organized, with a terrace that is perfect for breakfast or a few drinks later in the day. I enjoyed my time at Fatma's house.

Fatma is very warm and welcoming. I was out most of the time so unfortunately did not get to enjoy her company more. The attic room is large and very comfortable. The bathroom was very clean. Although the area is a bit rundown I found the people so friendly and enjoyed having çay in the small cafes there rather than in the busier more touristy areas. Fatmas house is well located close to all the areas one might want to visit in a short time; such as Galata and Sultanhamet. I walked everywhere and even when returning around midnight never felt unsafe.
