Neighborhood Overview

Upcountry Waimea (Kamuela on Hawaii Island, the Big Island) is cooler in temperature by about 10 degrees Fahrenheit, when compared to Kailua-Kona, where the airport (KOA) is located. The green grass and rolling hills with grazing cattle remind people of foothills, however from parts of the town, you can still see the ocean, as well as Mauna Kea. At 13,803 ft, Mauna Kea, almost a "fourteener," is draped in a cloak of snow at times in the winter. It's a 3 minute drive from Tootsie's Hideaway to the coffee shop and other shopping, only two minutes more to the grocery store. The energetic can ask me directions for a low-traffic route to the coffee shop and unique gift stores, or to the Nature Park for a relaxing stroll. Summer it is generally 70 - 85 degrees Fahrenheit (21 - 29 degrees Celsius). Winter varies from 55 - 70 degrees Fahrenheit (13 - 21 degrees Celsius). Please note: Sudden changes in temperature are common year-round, and the breeze can be chilly. Bring a jacket or wrap to

Notes

Again, there are three sets of stairs and NO wheelchair access. There is a bathroom sink, much like a hotel setup. I provide a small basin and dishwashing liquid and a dishtowel for washing up. There is a nearby laundromat. Guest laundry is available from me at $15 per load. (I will wash, dry & fold your laundry but may need at least 24 hours if I'm working. Please check with me.)

Transit

Waimea is fairly central on the island. It takes just under an hour by car from the airport (KOA) in Kailua-Kona to drive to Waimea. From Waimea it takes about 20 minutes by car to get to the beach and 30 minutes to reach Hawi on the northernmost tip of the island, and just over an hour to get to the historic town of Hilo. It is best to rent a car at the airport in Kailua-Kona. Although there are some buses on the island, the time schedules cater to those working at the resorts.

Access

To reach Tootsie's Hideaway from the street-level parking area, guests descend three outdoor stairways leading through the garden area to the ground level (no wheelchair access). Guests are welcome to enjoy the yard, rope swing and their private Lanai. The Host's private space includes the middle floor and top floor of the property.

Marie's place was amazing! Nestled in a beautiful neighborhood, 15 mins walk from town. Marie was the best host ever! She was friendly, helpful, and grateful! The neighborhood is peaceful and Waimea is just amazing. I couldn't recommend Tootsie's Place more. Absolutely perfect!

The whole stay at Marie's Airbnb was really pefect from the beginning on. Already before arrival she provided detailed information for the directions to find her place. Appartement itself looked exactly like on the pictures. It was clean and one can see that it was furnished with care and love to details. The place is pefect for a couple. Also the surrounding of Waimea is very nice. You can reach stunning beaches within 20 mins. Airport of Kona is 1 hr away. Marie was very welcoming and really enjoying having guests even inviting us for a wine. We can recommend to stay with Marie on Big Island. Thanx again for everything.

This unit was clean, cozy, and a bargain for the Waimea neighborhood. The host provided a bottle of wine, a small fruit basket, and some packaged snacks to get the weary traveler started off right. There is also free wifi service with excellent reception.

Tootsie´s Hideway is the perfect homebase to explore this beautiful island. There is everything you need (Coffeemaker, Microwave (if you don´t want to go out for dinner), fridge, internet, cosy bed, towels..... Waimea is a small beautiful city, it looks like you´re in the middle of the USA, but at the same time you are at the best beaches (like Hapuna Beach) in around 20 minutes. Waipio Valley is around 40 min, Kona 60 min, Hilo 75 min and Mauna Kea 90 min. And Marie is amazing. Just go there!

Marie is one of the true Airbnb hosts who "gets" it. She gives you space but is readily accessible with tips and local lore. She clearly cares about your island experience (local fresh fruit and coffee!) and keeps her cozy place economically priced. Centrally located, cooler than the beaches and just as leafy as the rainforests, I highly recommend staying here.

This apartment is close to town and in a special location in Waimea. One has total privacy being surrounded by tall shrubs and local trees. If one is fortunate, one evening might be spent sharing a glass of wine and good conversation with the owner.

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at Tootsie’s Hideaway! Marie is super responsive, the space was cozy, exceptionally clean and very comfortable. This was a great place to stay to enjoy Waimea and still be only 20 minutes from the beach.

Marie is a very thoughtful host, leaving us fresh fruit for the length of our stay to make mornings even sweeter. The apartment has a fantastic private porch/lanai that makes the space feel larger and extend your days from sunrise to sunset, even in the occasional Waimei rain.

Marie is an excellent host and fun person. Couldn’t ask for anything to have been better. The neighborhood is my favorite in Waimea! Perfect location. Everything was as advertised. I will no doubt book with her on my next trip to Waimea.

This cute hideaway provides privacy and a good location in a desirable neighborhood away from the busy main road in Waimea. It was perfect for my 7 day stay to catch up with friends/family and live like a local while being 15 mins from my favorite beaches. Marie provides an electric kettle for tea drinkers like me and all sorts of goodies to welcome you such as fresh fruit, wine and healthy snacks. There's a chopping board and knife so you can prepare fruit or salad or sandwiches and the toaster is handy so I had what I needed for breakfast and simple meals. The space was very comfortable for one and could work well for a couple for short stays. The comfy chairs on the large lanai make for an outside living room. Marie is a great host, giving you complete privacy but attentive if needed. Her instructions are clear and she's thought of everything. You'll love the sound of the birds in the morning. Book this space if it's available!

My experience with the host was pleasant and very seamless. Marie was so easy to communicate with and left me some treats and even a bottle of wine....all the amenities and then some. The exterior of the home was beautifully landscaped with pleasant smells and the quietness if the property was serene. The neighborhood was beautiful and the people were very friendly. Waimea was awesome and close enough to the beaches.

A perfect hideaway with the most wonderful hostess! This is a very private, quiet, peaceful, well organized and impeccably clean place to stay. We enjoyed the location in Waimea from which we could explore the north part of the island as well as enjoying the wonderful town itself.

Marie is a great host. When we arrived she had fresh yogurt and a bottle of wine for us. Lots of advice, great communicator and great directions to find her place. We loved the location. Not that far from restaurants and shops in Waimea. Just 20 minutes from Hapuna beach.

This was a great place to stay while exploring the big island! My wife and I stayed here two weeks, and enjoyed the whole time. Nice and private location, it was quiet in the evenings, and whenever we needed her, Marie was quick to respond by text and then quick to act. The space was large enough for us to spread out comfortably, and the porch was a great place to hang out in the evenings or spend some lazy days. Would highly recommend!

True to description and pictures. Great value for price. Quiet, peaceful location. Marie communicates great. Pleasantly surprised how gorgeous upcountry Hawaii is, beautiful green rolling hills, Parker Ranch pastureland behind the housing development Marie lives in. Very nice to be up and away from the commercialism of the coast. Thanks for being a wonderful host Marie!!

Marie’s Place was beautiful, quiet and private, a lovely place to stay for a few days in a beautiful Waimea area! There were lovely thoughtful touches throughout the studio (umbrella, torch, breakfast and fruit) and while we didn’t meet Marie she was so welcoming and helpful, providing a lot of local tips, to make our stay perfect. The lanai was a beautiful space to relax in the morning or after a day of exploring. Thanks again Marie and we’ll definitely stay again if we return to Waimea!

My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Tootsie's Hideaway. The accommodation was immaculate, comfortable, and peaceful - great to come back to at the end of the day to unwind. it had all the basics you need. Tootsie was really helpful with tips on where to go, prompt in her replies, and so friendly. Great range of food in town, cooler and more comfortable climate than down at sea level (yet a convenient drive to the beach), and beautiful scenic drives nearby.

Marie's place in Waimea is centrally located near the town center and is a great place for a solo traveler like me or a couple. Marie has thought of every detail in her place that a person might need while traveling. Her place is snug, comfy and neat as a pin. In the afternoon the lanai is a lovely place to hang out, read and relax in the sun. We shared some wonderful conversations about our common interest in travel. I hope to return again on future visits.

Marie is such a kind and friendly host, you will really enjoy staying in her guest suite. The suite has a cosy bedroom, en-suite and small attached study area that serves as a kitchenette. The local town has plenty of food options so there's no real need to cook, but Marie was kind enough to leave out snacks and microwaveable food. The suite is on the lowest floor of a 3 story home and although it doesn't have a view, and is set into the hill, it does have a little patio to sit on and enjoy a morning coffee. The area is a great midway stop off if you're wanting to see a few spots up north and stay fairly central to them. We used it as a jumping off point to Hawi, Waipio, Mouna Kea and visiting a Vanilla farm. The town isn't huge but has some nice coffee and food spots. It's sometimes a bit rainy there, but that does mean we saw loads of rainbows, as sunshine is not far off. Is Marie offers you a coffee on her Lanai - say yes! She has a lovely view, friendly cat, and it was she's so friendly it's easy to get lost in conversation and forget you have day plans! I would definitely recommend Marie's place as a nice spot to stay in and visit the nearby area.

Tootsie's Hideaway was one of the best, if not the best, Airbnb's I've stayed in. The place is beautifully kept, Marie was an amazing host, and the value was par to none. Marie's home is in a beautiful part of Waimea with easy access to most parts of the island. I would highly recommend this place to anyone staying on the Big Island. Thanks again Marie, for opening your home up to my wife and I.

Cute, small place, with lots of attention to detail by Marie. Perfect for a single person or a couple but there would be no space for a third. In a quiet neighborhood in Waimea, you are 15 minutes from Hapuna beach and 15 minutes from Honoka'a/20-25 minutes to Waipio. Waimea is a great ranch town with good restaurants and a great farmers market. The place is super efficient and clean with just about everything you need in a small space and nothing you don't (no tv, which wasn't missed). We really enjoyed our stay!

My fiance and I stayed at Marie's place for a week. The location was excellent, and an easy drive to all of the places we went. Checking in was easy and there were nice little touches including coffee and snacks, as well as all toiletries we would need. The place itself was clean and nicely decorated, the perfect space for two people. The lanai was excellent for a morning coffee. While we were in Hawaii, there was a storm that left us in our AirBnB most of one day, and Marie went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable. She came down with a lantern, extra batteries, water bottles, and snacks in case the power went out and she even baked some cookies and brought us down a few. We loved our stay at Marie's and hope to one day come back!
