Tucked away in a hidden paradise, we offer our charming cottage. Immersed in a plethora of plants, flowers, and amazing views, it is the perfect "get-away" spot. You'll find yourself situated on the cliffs above the majestic Waipio Bay. From the home, you have wide open views of the Kohala Cliffs, a 17 mile view up the coast to Pololu Point, and a 50 mile view across the sea to the Beautiful island of Maui. We are proud to be able to share a bit of "Old Hawai'i" with our beautiful hidden oasis. The home is private. The home is equipped with WIFI, a DVD plaver and a flat screen TV. There is a covered carport connected to the cottage, there are three covered long (very minimal incline) steps that lead from carport to the front porch. The home has a big Jacuzzi tub with views of the Ocean and Maui. The cottage has a big yard and there are lovely garden areas with flowers, herbs and fruit trees. There is also a two person swing to enjoy. We offer complete privacy in this tropical paradise

Neighborhood Overview
The cottage is centrally located between Hilo and Kona. Conveniently located near ATV tours, Horsebacking, Ziplining, Hiking Tours, Helicopter tours and other fun activities. There are many great "must see" businesses in the area such as the "Hamakua Mushroom farm", producing amazing specialty Mushrooms, The Paul Mitchell's "Awapuhi" farm growing awaphui gingers for silky shampoo, or "Hawaii Vanilla Company" which just happens to be the only producing vanilla farm in the US. Our charming one street historic town of Honokaa is a must see as well. Don't forget to spend a day exploring the Valley!

Access
Renting a 4x4 jeep can allow you to get to special places like the short 4x4 only road down to the black sand beach in Waipio Valley, over to the green sand beach and up to the summit of Mauna Kea. Even if you don't get a 4x4, a rental car will still get you everywhere you need to go. From the Cliffhouse there are lots of hiking opportunities as well.

What a delightful, private, breathtaking, and perfectly situated cottage with incredible charm and a perfect layout. I can't recommend this place enough. Kristan has created a rare to find, true sanctuary. I didn't get to meet Kristan until serendipitously right as I was leaving, and was glad to meet the person who put so much into creating such a special place. We had a brief, sweet exchange. The views were breathtaking, the garden and house were put together with such love and care, and the quaint town nearby was full of the charm of the Aloha spirit. My favorite part was waking up to the spectacular scenery, having coffee with Lani, and taking pictures of the cliffs and garden so that I could remind myself of what heaven on Earth looks like. This hideaway is quite the gem, and I hope to return one day. The orchids were plentiful, the pleasant sounds of nature never ceased to amaze me, and the unique treasures within the home truly gave us an authentically local experience. The cliff house has everything you need, and will not disappoint. Mahalo!

Jun 27, 2019From entering the door to pulling ourselves away, the love in this place is tangible and abundant. The view is as magical as described by other reviewers. We live above Kealakekua Bay on the other side of the island and have a million dollar view. This is three times that. The hale is quirky and interesting. We are 2 middle age couples and were perfectly comfortable.

Jun 27, 2019Kristan's hideaway is breathtaking. Its absolutely beautiful and completely secluded with stunning views yet has all the amenities of a deluxe rental. I would recommend arriving during daylight hours, we had a little trouble finding the spot because we were looking for it at 10pm. There are also 2 dogs and a cat that hang out in the area, all of which are super affectionate, so getting in and out of the hideaway requires a stop to attend to them. Thank you for hosting us!
Jun 27, 2019If getting engaged at the Private Hawaiian Hideaway cliff house house isn't enough indication of how much my fiancee and I enjoyed our time then let me just (Website hidden by Airbnb) was amazing! The view of the Waipio Valley from the cliff house is breathtaking and the house is beautiful and well appointed. The hideaway is only 25 minutes from the town of Honokaa where you can buy groceries and get gas. You can walk to the Waipio look out and there is a decent hike or drive down to the black sand beaches. I highly recommend the hike...its a unique and beautiful place. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a romantic and unique experience on the big island. We will be back!

Jun 27, 2019We had an amazing stay @ Kristan's Cliffhouse. It truly is a hideaway with amazing views. The pictures do not fully do this place justice! The cliffhouse itself is gorgeous and very comfortable for 2 people, with plenty of amenities incl a full kitchen and a nice jacuzzi tub. Kristan was great to deal with and was very prompt in responding to our questions before our arrival. A great experience and we will definitely stay here again the next time we are on the Big Island!
Jun 27, 2019It was really hard to leave Kristan's place. We wanted quiet privacy and that's exactly what we got. The place is stunning. We loved everything about it. The sounds of the hidden waterfall, the night time chorus of nature, not to mention the amazing whale watching in the mornings while sipping coffee. The bed was very comfortable and the island breeze at night made for a very restful stay. I would like to mention that Kristan gave exact directions that would have made it very easy for us to find the house. However, I didn't print them out thinking I would have cell service and would able to rely on my phone. BE SURE YOU PRINT Kristan's directions before your stay. When she says Private Hideaway she means it. We're so grateful to Kristan for making our vacation one to remember!! MAHALO!

Jun 27, 2019The view is what makes this a special place; there are indeed few places in the world that boast such an impressive amenity. The yard's botanical features are also beautiful and diverse. Mosquitoes galore, so make sure to bring repellant, and the housing was adequate, if a bit damp from humidity. Also not a lot to do in the area except look at the view, which, once again, was undeniably exceptional.
Jun 27, 2019Pictures do not do this hideaway Justice. It was so peaceful and relaxing listening to the sounds birds, crashing water and a near by waterfall. The views were absolutely breathtaking - it's was very hard to leave this place. Kirsten had thought of everything - candles, and ear plugs (if people can't take the sound at night) I especially loved how the house was so open to the environment surrounding the house.
Jun 27, 2019This place is AMAZING!!! Our stay was much too short. If you are booking a shuttle into the valley (highly recommended) you could use the Waipio Valley Shuttle & Tours....its in the same building as Waipio Valley Artworks which is literally 2-3 minutes from this cottage. Everything was exactly as described. VERY clean, tucked away, private, with an absolutely incredible view. We would absolutely stay here again. We found the cottage before dark but if you can't you will have a pretty difficult time due to the location. We didn't have any AT&T service which wasn't a problem for us. There is wifi though once you get there. We printed the directions to the cottage like Kristan suggested and that was extremely helpful. Perfect place to stay after a long day in the valley.

Jun 27, 2019The Hideaway House is a dream. It was the perfect place for us to stay, and we enjoyed it immensely. Kristan is one of a kind! Her 11am check out time is firm, so make sure you're ready to go (11am snuck up on me, so I was about 30 minutes behind- sorry Kristan!) We loved having lizard friends around the house- they made us smile and we named all of them. Kristan's son (I think) also has a very sweet dog who is occasionally around. The dog is kind and respectful and I think just likes to know that you are as happy as she is. I loved the abundance of fruit everywhere! We ate so much fruit around town. Our favorite places were: Sea Cucumber and Hina Rae's for brunch/lunch in Honokaa, Waipi'o beach for a GNARLY hike with a great reward at the bottom, and Hapuna Beach (clear on the other side of the island, but a great drive!)

When booking the Cliff House, I thought the pictures of the place and its view had to be too good to be true, but I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the pictures actually don't do justice to how incredible the view is from the Cliff House. This is the ideal place for anyone looking for a quiet, rejuvenating stay on the Big Island, with the perfect balance between modern luxuries and exposure to Hawaii's gorgeous natural landscapes. I would love to stay here again.
Jun 27, 2019This really is a cabin that let's you feel like you're part of nature, but with modern comforts. Incredible views, gorgeous garden and great, private location. Decorated with care, with lots of unique details. Mosquitoes did manage to find their way in, perhaps because we weren't careful enough with the door when we first arrived, and it does get a bit humid/damp.

Jun 27, 2019Hamakua Hideaway is amazing! The views are truly breathtaking. We spent 2 nights here while traveling around the Big Island and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Kristan has thought of every little detail to make this place special. The location is private (very close Waipi'o Valley overlook) but just a short drive to the town of Honoka'a which has a grocery store and several restaurants. Of note, I would recommend a 4 wheel drive vehicle because the driveway is a little steep.

Jun 27, 2019Kristan's Hamakua Hideaway Cliff House is a delightful little dream palace in the clouds. We arrived and were dumbstruck by the beauty of the view and the garden that frames it. It's perched above Waipio Valley, maybe one of the most beautiful places on earth, and it's situated so that you can take it all in from the garden, if the weather is nice, or from inside, if it's raining. The weather seems to constantly shift in the valley, which only makes sense, since it is a rainforest. But that made the experience all the more interesting. Travelers should take note that since it *is* in the middle of a rainforest, it can get pretty damp inside. Bugspray is a must if you're going to sit outside. Maybe the single best view from the house is from the tub in the screened-in bathroom—you should absolutely take a bath and watch the sunset. The water takes a while to get warm, but it does get there. Transportation-wise, we debated whether we needed a Jeep or not. You *don't* need a Jeep to get to the house, but to get down into the valley itself—which you absolutely must do—you must have 4WD or otherwise very sturdy walking shoes and a lot of ambition. It's a long steep walk back up. (We opted to get the Jeep.) The house is more cabin-in-the-woods than it is a luxury cabana, so come in the spirit of being thrust into beautiful and rugged nature, and you won't be disappointed. It's a truly special spot.

Jun 27, 2019My husband and I usually go the "Kona resort route" when we visit the big island, but this time we wanted to experience Hawaii in a different, more natural way. We definitely hit the jackpot with this charming Hamakua Hideaway! Nestled in tall bamboo and lush green vegetation, we felt we had total privacy -- and the only sounds were the birds, occasional rainfall, and frogs, frogs, frogs (the nocturnal kind)! It was exactly what I -- a city person -- would imagine living in the midst of the Amazon rainforest would be like (minus the snakes). :) Of course the magnificent view from this Waipio rim location must certainly be among the best in the area (the photo is exactly as it is). Although we did not have the pleasure of meeting Kristan, we did randomly connect with Scotty, the friendly caretaker, so help was nearby if needed. Thank you for this most unique "jungle" experience and many very special anniversary memories!

Jun 27, 2019What amazing memories we brought home. The couple of nights we stayed at this rustic and cozy hideaway were incredible. We couldn't stop taking photos of the breath-taking views and botanical-like garden with every kind of tropical flower you can think of. The amenities were very nice and we found it to be very clean. We'll return for sure!
Jun 27, 2019Host was very accommodating but unseen, and that's not a criticism, it just made the experience that much more private and serene. Neighbors are virtually invisible, though there was one memorable visit from a hyper-enthusiastic, friendly, overjoyed to be petted, but utterly-silent white dog, who vanished just as she had appeared, like a ninja. This place is about views and sound. An unseen rush of water cascades through the verdant chasm, the soundtrack for the 'living photograph' views of the mouth of Waipio and coastline beyond. In rainy weather, only with some difficulty and potential danger might you catch a glimpse of this torrent, a churning chocolate upstream, and only your ears telling you that it has turned to a waterfall somewhere below you, pounding down somewhere in the distance below the swinging love-seat outside the entry. I found myself mesmerized by view and sound, with any number of similar waterfalls visible in the distance across Waipio. We realized soon after arriving that, unlike with most hotel accommodations, there needn't be any guilt or regrets for finding a lazy minimal-travel schedule that allows one to STAY here and enjoy the place. Shop for food to stash enroute if possible, and bring at least your breakfast selections. Cook anything you like in the well-appointed, small but elegant kitchen...which also has That View...
Jun 27, 2019We chose the Ciffhouse as our third and final stop for a week-long visit and the site of our little wedding on the Big Island. The bright and cheerful cottage was a memorable perch for our two-day stay. It's an older property, somewhat rustic, but well-mainained, so adjust your expectations accordingly (and be Ok with the geckos, inside and out, and bring mosquito repellant). The bed is comfortable, the kitchen has been updated, and though the shower is small, it has good water pressure. The proximity to Waipio Valley cannot be beat. Although we had 4WD, we chose to walk down to the valley floor/black sand beach, and highly recommend that over driving, which seemed dangerous and risky for the inexperienced. We were completely taken by the grandeur of waking up this view and watching the sun wash over the 2000 ft cliffs. And equally enamored with drifting off to sleep alongside the symphony of rainforest frogs outside. I appreciate that there is no additional cleaning fee or taxes--it's all included in the $250 nightly rate. More than any other place we stayed, the Cliffhouse and Honokaa/Kukuihaele is less touristy and nestled among local residents. Parts of the neighborhood seem economically depressed and the sight of chained up dogs was heart-wrenching to us as animal lovers. But having the property owner's friendly cat and dog visit us was delightful and comforting. Our cell phones did not work at all for calls, but there IS wifi, thus emails and texts can be sent and received, if more slowly than your used to. Definitely arrive during daylight hours. Though the instructions provided were spot on, the cliff house is tucked away and the area is very dark at night. We loved our time there and hope to return on a special anniversary.

Jun 27, 2019The cliff house is a really hidden place. As soon as you step on the porch there is a stunning view of the cliffs and the bay! It is very remote and quiet there, bur when the night fall a thousand frogs start to squeak, it is amazing. Do not miss the watch the stars at nights, they are so clear and bright - just fantastic!
Jun 27, 2019We stayed here for the second part of our trip; first five days near Kailua and four nights here. It was such a welcome change in scenery from black lava to lush rainforest. The house is a charming private retreat where you can really get away from it all. I really enjoyed the jungle come alive at night. it's actually quite loud! Every night my husband and I established a relaxing routine after dinner: 1) draw a soothing jacuzzi bath, 2) drink wine on the porch embracing the stunning waipio valley, and 3) fall asleep by the warm glowing fireplace in peace and serenity. Four nights like that make you never ever want to leave. The bonus were our daily visits from the neighbors dogs and cat. They are the absolute sweetest dogs! One of them likes to bark a bit at first to say hi but don't be alarmed :) There were only a couple drawbacks; mosquitoes are inevitable here and they will inevitably get inside no matter how careful you are with the door. My husband and I are prone to be bitten so Unfortunately we were bitten a number of times; I started to get a bit paranoid about it but you basically should just cover up at all times - especially when you go to sleep. Also this is isn't really a cooking kitchen and there no microwave with limited cooking accessories. So id recommend cooking simple meals. There's good places to eat for dinner 25 min away in Waimea. And there malama market in honokaa. You can get a duraflame log there (if it doesn't run out) for the fireplace. The logs that are on the property are too wet and won't light. Enjoy!

Jun 27, 2019The place was fantastic! As incredible as it sounds, the pictures don't do the view justice. We were in awe every morning. My wife and I came here on our honeymoon and loved it. The place has 2 beds (1 of them is in a nice little loft), a usable kitchen, and is perfect for 2-4 people. The garden and area surrounding the place is a destination in itself! It's very close to the Waipio Valley and walking distance to a great breakfast place called Waipio cook house. We loved it would recommend this place to anyone!
Jun 27, 2019A wonderful house with awesome view to the sea. You can do wale watching from the garden...its amazing. The place is very private and you can really enjoy relaxing time. We felt in love with little Kitty and got visited every day. As we have two cats at home it makes us more feeling welcome with our little guest.... The dogs and the little puppies were a plus on top for us. It was so nice and we can just highly recommend everything. The contact to owner and the preparation of information package was perfect. Thanks a lot for a wonderful time in you nice house.
Jun 27, 2019The host was very helpful with directions. We did not see here at all, but when we had a question we called and she helped us right away. The house is beautiful, and very comfortable, in the most beautiful location and view possible. The tub facing out over the cliffs and the ocean is extraordinary. The kitchen is well equipped. Kristen had an amazing amount and selection of reading material. Alot of information on Hawaii. Just do not arrive at night, because it is hard to find in the dark. I only wish we could have stayed longer

Although not met in person, Kristan's presence was felt and appreciated in her amazing attention to detail and feng shui. Not only clean, well equipped, peaceful, exquisitely decorated and located...This is a hostess who has created something VERY special and enjoys sharing it! From the moment we arrived at the Hideaway it felt like the welcoming embrace of a dearly loved friend. Add to that the stunning vista of the coastline and surrounding garden. We had our own private front seat window to the beauty of the ocean and open sky...watched whales cavort and a waterfall appear from the cliffside after a rain! If you have the opportunity to stay here we are fully confident that you will feel as lucky and as grateful as we are! Mahalo Kristan...from the bottom of our hearts!
Jun 27, 2019I don't know where to begin! The most beautiful place we have ever had the pleasure of staying. Not only is the view astounding, the home itself is adorable. The grounds are carefully landscapes with so much interesting and gorgeous plant life. Especially loved taking baths in the jacuzzi tub at sunset, with huge windows overlooking the sea and mountains. The cabin has lovely woodwork and details. Such a dream. I could go on and on. We didn't want to leave. Can't believe this place is real. The best Airbnb ever.
Jun 27, 2019If you're fortunate enough to stumble upon this listing and it's available, consider it a true blessing and do not pass it up. My husband and I spent two nights of our week long honeymoon here and couldn't have asked for a more perfect experience. Kristan is an angel for sharing her piece of paradise with the Airbnb community. You aren't too far from town, but we chose to do our grocery shopping on our way and prepared most meals at her place. It's a simple but stocked kitchen with everything you need. I'm a NYC chef, so believe me when I say it has everything you'll need. French press and coffee maker, blender, tea pot, water purifier, etc. we loved the jacuzzi tub overlooking the ocean. Words and photos fall short in a huge way when trying to describe this place. Thank you Kristan! And the dogs! Perfection!

Jun 27, 2019The accommodations and the view were absolutely stunning. You can hear the waterfall, the flowers are beautiful, and the bathtub room is something that would be $100/hour minimum at a spa. We're pet people, so we were happy to see friendly animals when we arrived, but heads up for anyone with pet allergies- the cat has a sense of entitlement to the house. Also, 3 of the dogs are very sweet and friendly (although if you try to give them food they may start fighting), but one other dog, who was either stray or had recently had puppies, was snarling and posturing very aggressively, and followed us into the driveway. I'm a ranch kid, I've been around animals my whole life, and I can clearly see when a dog is potentially aggressive vs. just barking defensively... and I didn't feel comfortable approaching this dog at all. I understand that the property is on the rural side and that means a relaxed attitude toward keeping pets confined, which I'm actually used to and don't mind at all- but the presence of an aggressive dog is not appropriate for a vacation rental. If I were the type of person who was just scared and tried to run from the dog, I'm quite sure it would've chased me. It continued to snarl and move toward me even after I clapped loudly at it and yelled at it to go home. It didn't back off until I started kicking gravel from the driveway at it. I would've called the host to ask her to come deal with it, but unfortunately she was unresponsive through our 2 day stay. I left her a voicemail and called several times the day of our checkin, and I'm back on the mainland now and she still hasn't called me back. I'm new to Airbnb, this vacation was the first time we've ever used it, and I had just been checking my email for correspondence rather than opening the Airbnb app- turns out there were several messages I hadn't seen, including one from our host that contained all the details of our checkin. It was my fault for not checking the messages via the app, but on the day of our checkin we weren't quite sure what the procedure was going to be, and when I called the host, her phone went straight to voicemail every time. So... All that having been said, I'd still highly recommend this place to a friend, provided that the aggressive dog issue is dealt with. The location is absolutely breathtaking, the accommodations are very comfortable, and the full kitchen was great (don't mind the geckos, they run when you get close.) We love to cook and the big island has some of the best produce you'll find anywhere on earth. And the other 3 dogs really were super adorable, they would wait outside our door with their tails wagging, but were trained not to come in the house. It was definitely an experience...
Jun 27, 2019The view is real and even better than the pictures can capture. We loved this cabin on the cliff and its lush, scenic surroundings. Close to Waipio Valley with easy access to tours it still made us feel completely relaxed and alone as it is tucked between trees and a cliff overlooking the ocean. We felt at home instantly.
Jun 27, 2019All I can say is WOW--- This place is truly amazing...a hidden gem. It is hard to put into words what makes it so great- you have to stay here to see what it's all about! The Hideaway was definitely our favorite stop on the Big Island- 2 nights here just wasn't enough! The house is close to town (Honoka'a) where you can buy groceries/visit shops and restaurants and is a very short drive (or walk) to Waipi'o Valley. We preferred to make our meals here as the view so beautiful and the house so comfortable you won't want to leave :)

Jun 27, 2019The view is breathtaking. As we walked into the home, it felt like we were in a movie -- so cozy, cute and vacation-like. We took full advantage of the outdoor swing, tub (with amazing view) and porch (had coffee there each morning). It's the perfect retreat! Location-wise we were a .3 mile drive to the Waipio lookout for a beautiful hike. Cell service can be spotty depending on your carrier (Kristan let us know that ahead of time), for the most part wifi worked fine. Kristan was very responsive in giving us directions and recommendations for grocery stores. The only thing we would have loved to see is maybe a little binder with info on the house (e.g. instructions for working the fire place and oven). Overall an amazing time, would highly recommend!
Jun 27, 2019The Hamakua Hideaway Cliff House was one of the most spectacular places I've had the pleasure of Airbnbing. From the 2 person jacuzzi, to the wonderful kitchen, to the amazing views of the coastline and Waipio Valley, this one of a kind cottage was truly something special. With directions in hand, the place is easily found, and you will soon discover the beautiful gardens and breathtaking views as you look around the grounds. Within a hour's drive from some excellent beaches and only a short distance from hiking and other activities, this spot is definitely one to book if you have the opportunity. Host was helpful with anything we asked, which wasn't much. Keep in mind cellphone service is little to nothing, but the internet works great! Thank you Kristan for the hospitality!
Jun 27, 2019The Cliff House was everything advertised and more! We had an amazing week staying there. When you look out the front window, it's as if you are looking at a postcard. Kristan was super helpful in helping us find the house and figure out activities. The house and grounds are in great condition and it feels as if you are all but alone on the cliff. If you are looking for a house to relax and get away from everything, you MUST stay here.
Jun 27, 2019Everything was beyond the pictures when we checked in the cliff house around sunset time. It's private, cozy and beautifully decorated. It's right next to the road leading to Waipio's valley so easy for us to hike down the valley. However I think it's better suited for the honeymoon couples or families seeking for privacy. Since there is no restaurant around and 30mins from the town, I don't recommend you to stay over 2 or 3 nights. Also, since the house has been listed on tripadvisor, yelp and lonely planet, I think it's a bit pricey and too commercialized. I'd prefer knowing local ppl with my airbnb stay, but Kristan didn't show up. It's just personal preference.
Jun 27, 2019Our stay at Kristan's was the last stop on our honeymoon. It was by far the most relaxing spot during our stay in Hawaii. The view of the valley is unreal. We could tell that this place sits next to a waterfall since we could hear the rushing of it in the brush. We truly fell in love with this hideaway. This was by far one of our best Airbnb experiences and would love to come back!
Jun 27, 2019Kristan's description of the Hamakua Hideaway is too modest. Once you're there you'll understand - unlimited beauty, light, air, ocean and mana on tap! If you're looking for the Four Seasons experience you should stay there instead, but this is the Four Seasons of rustic Kukuihaele. Like summer camp for adults in paradise. The house was easy to find, but I don't recommend arriving in a downpour late at night like we did. We immediately felt at home and we absolutely loved our 6 night stay. So much so we are planning to return ASAP. About those dogs - they're the friendliest pack of poi dogs we've ever encountered in Hawaii. All bark when you arrive, but no bite and pure love. They adopted us into their pack for the week. Thanks for keeping old Hawaii alive out on the edge of the island, Kristan. It's an amazing and wonderful place to rest and recharge and we can't wait to get back.

Jun 27, 2019BEYOND expectations. I truly thought the Photos were like the best angles of the property but words could not describe our reactions when we actually arrived. The view and the colors of the property blew us away. The value here is so worth it. We honestly considered it the best part of our Honeymoon and can't believe this property is shared with other people. If you get an opportunity to go to Big Island This home is not to be missed. We just loved the home, the view, the plants, the little lizards and even friendly neighbor doggies that came to share the sunset. Everything you need to cook, shower, and relax are there. It's super private and the views are out of this world. Highly recommend.

I had one moment, looking into a mirror and for a moment not being certain if the background reflection was artwork or the actual environment. We hiked from here to the Waipio valley floor and out to the black sand beach. Unforgettable!
Jun 27, 2019We had a fantastic stay at the Hamakua Hideaway Cliff House. It's a beautiful - totally private - setting surrounded by bamboo forest, lush tropical garden and a beautiful view of Waipio Bay. The setting is even more special than the pictures can show. The house is nicely furnished and well equipped. Kitchen and bathroom are well appointed. Couple small items: WiFi was a little intermittent for us, and basic insect precautions needed (house is fully screened, repellent if sitting out in the evening). Overall the perfect 'getaway' spot. This is a very special place and highly recommended!

From being greeted by dogs the second we arrived (they were extremely friendly), to the view as soon as you step out of your car, it truly was better than advertised. The view from the yard, house, loft & porch is really nicer than we could have even imagined. Good location close to Hilo shops and a grocery store (the whole island can be pretty easily driven in general). Great, romantic getaway that I would absolutely recommend to anyone who is visiting the big island. Thanks!
Jun 27, 2019This was my 2nd time staying at the Cliffhouse Hideaway and I couldn't possibly feel more satisfied and honored to spend my last couple of days there. We get to see a lot of beautiful views while traveling around the islands, but this is one of the best! And you get to see it the second you wake up in the morning until the moment the sun sets. A perfect place to take in the essence of what Hawaii truly is, accompanied by a comfortable bed, a fully functioning kitchen, a jacuzzi tub, a napping nook upstairs, books, binoculars, friendly puppies..... this place has it all!

Jun 27, 2019The Hamakua Hideaway Cliff House is exquisite. It is RIGHT next to the Waipio Valley, so if you are looking to explore that area this is a perfect place. My boyfriend and I walked to the lookout, which I think is about half a mile or less. From there, we walked down to the waterfall and the beach. It is a very private little place tucked back on the property. The views are simply amazing, and the big windows ensure that you soak in the view from wherever you are in the house. There is a really cool loft with a little bed as well. The bathtub that looks out at the view is awesome. There are two friendly dogs that hang out around the house, very sweet! The house has everything you need and, to us, is super luxurious. Your phone won't have service there (a plus!) but there is good wifi available. Thank you Kristan for sharing this place with the world. The overall energy, vibe, and again, location of the place, really made our trip!

Jun 27, 2019Absolutely amazing! The pictures do not do the view and overall experience justice. It has everything you need from a practical standpoint (great little kitchen, plenty of towels, nice king size bed, privacy, easy to find, parking spot, etc.) but it's the location, view, and unique touches that make this place worth the trip, for example the jet tub overlooking the cliffs, cool rugs and island decor, the love-seat swing outside, and the super friendly pups that visited us each morning and evening. Also a nice walk to Waipio lookout and the beach below. This was such a nice getaway from Honolulu!

Jun 27, 2019Cannot begin to describe how amazing this place is. If you are looking for a spot to be a tourist, where you can walk to shops full of other tourists and go to beaches full of tourists, this is not your place. However, if you want to experience the big island in all of its glory, this is it. The house makes you feel like it's just you and the island. It is, in itself, a destination. It rained a lot while my wife and I were there and everyday we woke up saying 'if our plans get rained out we'll be perfectly happy staying in, reading in the loft, and soaking in the view'. Kristan was easy to reach and a great host. The house had everything you'd need to feel at home, and its proximity to Honoka'a was great for stocking up on supplies. I recommend this place to anyone who wants some peace and quiet and really enjoys being surrounded by nature. 10 stars out of 5.
Jun 27, 2019We loved staying at the cliffhouse. Its a little piece of heaven. The ultamate getaway in a tropical paradise. Rent a 4wd if you go so you can drive down to the black sand beach in the waipio valley which is 5 minutes away. Highly recommended.

Jun 27, 20191000 stars. 50 out of 10. 5 thumbs up. To say this place is worth the cost would be an extreme understatement. Without a doubt the single best Airbnb experience we've ever had. The space is thoughtfully and elegantly designed, using so many (bug-proof) screens that you feel every breeze and are virtually outside. The residence, which is full of interesting objects and beautiful orchids, literally adjoins a river that feeds the falls, the sound of which is forever present inside the home. It must be one of only a handful of rentals, if not the only one, so close to the heart of Waipio - which is one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring places on earth. It's more than a luxury accommodation - it's a serene, otherworldly experience that will forever change your perspective. Nearby Honoka'a town is also lovely, and Waipio Cookhouse, the local restaurant down the street from the Cliff House, is not to be missed. They claim, probably correctly, to be the only place on earth that makes pancakes using fresh Waipio valley poi, incredible bacon from valley pigs, etc. Farm to table in the truest sense, and best breakfast we've ever had. Jun 27, 2019When we arrived we were blown away by the view. Our to-do plans changed instantly. After visiting the farmers market in Honoka'a (10 mins away) we spent the day relaxing at the cottage. Counting boats, exploring the curated artifacts and decor of the cottage, reading parts of the books on the shelves and listening to a couple CD's all provided. Bring some grub and expect to not want to leave!
Jun 27, 2019We spent a week here for our 25th anniversary and What a wonderful cottage! Spectacular view with an amazing garden. We ate every meal on the back lawn overlooking the ocean whenever we were home (until the last day when it rained). 2 sweet puppies from next door were there to greet us every time we drove in the driveway. Saw a mongoose in the yard the first day (dogs kept them away after that) and geckos in the house. Lots of wildlife and beauty all around. Well stocked with kitchen items/utensils for cooking at home. We would definitely recommend!
Jun 27, 2019The cliffhouse view is absolutely incredible. The Waipio Valley brings a calming vibe to the secluded cottage. The cottage has plenty of screened in windows and we loved feeling the breeze through the house- the actual house was quaint and was perfect for the two of us. The price point for the cliffhouse is all about the view... amenities are standard and there were a few things we were missing in the kitchen. Kristan was very communicative via AirBnb message and text. We loved hiking in the valley and checking out Honokaa. Will definitely recommend the cliffhouse to friends!
Jun 27, 2019This was one of the most incredible settings that we have ever stayed at. Unbelievable vistas of Waipio Valley, the ocean, and amazing sunset views. Truly magical. Recommend having a 4wd vehicle to easily access the valley down the very steep road (only low gear 4wd vehicles allowed on the road to the beach below). Looking forward to returning someday!

Jun 27, 2019Just wow! The pictures are beautiful but being there is even better! The home is so welcoming and the views are so spectacular it makes it hard to leave! Which is a good thing because it takes about an hour and a half to get to Kona and a little less than that to get to Hilo. However, there is a lot to do nearby! We highly recommend Waipi'o black sand beach! You can hike down or (if you're experienced at off-roading and rented a jeep) you can drive down. We drove down so we could spend more time at the beach and loved every minute. You can even see the cliff house from the beach! The bed was so comfy! There is an extensive movie collection. Kristan provided a lot of brochures for local places which we found very helpful! We highly recommend this home!
Jun 27, 2019I hate to share about this place, as it is my favorite "secret hideaway." The setting is absolutely amazing, with a view you will never forget. The house itself is nicely furnished with quaint furniture, a nice kitchen and a loft with a killer view. Though easily accessible from the main road, the location is very private, as if you are in your own world, yet, Kristan, just up the road, is very responsive to any last minute needs or questions. This place is a great jumping off spot fro hiking down into Waipio Valley, but with the view at the house, you may never want to leave. Very romantic.

Jun 27, 2019The best part of Kristan's place is definitely the view, followed very closely by the privacy, then that bathtub, then the butterflies. The house is "walled off" from all the surrounding houses and properties by the lush jungle vegetation, and in particular a massive wall of bamboo. After checking in, we didn't see Kristan (or anyone) for the entire time we were there. Kristan also has some very nice landscaping, which must act like a buffet for butterflies because I've never seen so many (and different species) outside of a real butterfly sanctuary. Beautiful and amazing. Honestly, the only downside of the property (if you could call it that) is the jungle sounds at night. There are a a bunch of birds and other animals that start making noise around sunset and they don't let up until sunrise. In my experience, it was much quieter around noon than around midnight. If you are a person that is very sensitive to sound, you may not want to book here. (Although neither I nor my wife had any trouble sleeping, at all.) Oh, and that bathtub? It's much, much, much better than the pictures show. It has the same beautiful view as the rest of the house, with screens for walls to let in the wonderful tropical breezes. If I could, I would live in that bathtub.
Jun 27, 2019This house did not disappoint - great food nearby and of course the view. The Jeep got nice and muddy in the Valley - don't miss that and do not walk down. Best to go early and have the beach all by yourself. Nice way to spend half the day. Wi-fi without a password is great too. We saw a gecko as we were leaving the kitchen - our good luck paid off at a fine lunch at Merriman's. In Honokaa be sure to eat the acai bowl at Hina Rae's Cafe and Aulani Cafe was also great. But right around the corner from the house is the best - Waipi'o Cookhouse. Yum!
Jun 27, 2019My wife and I stayed here for two nights on our honeymoon and our only regret is that we didn't choose to stay longer. This place exceeded our expectations in every way. The view is so beautiful it doesn't seem real, you keep staring out at the cliffs thinking it has to be a photograph; no, it's real life. But it doesn't stop there. The house itself is beautifully decorated, right down to the small details. The cottage is small, but everything about it (lighting, windows, fan, kitchen, etc) makes sense. The lofted room is super cool as well and has a sliding door for privacy. We didn't use it, but if you're traveling with friends, it's certainly a bonus. The house feels secluded and private, yet there are still nice dining and activity options very close by (5-15min). Highly recommend!

Jun 27, 2019The Cliff House is an oasis in Waipi'o Valley. Both the location and decor make it feel as if you've been transported to a different time and world, especially the loft area. It arguably has a better view than the main overlook down the road, although the rain and mist obscured the view for most of our stay. Thankfully, it was clear when we arrived and right before we left so we could soak it in! The beautiful garden frames the view too. Most of all, we loved the opportunities for nighttime baths with the sounds of rainfall all around. The overhead fan made sleeping easier, although the lack of covers on some of the windows caused the whole place to become damp during the intense rainstorms, including the bed. The frogs and bugs were extremely loud at night, even with the windows closed, but we managed to sleep through the symphony of noise. Overall, it was a positive as it added to the tropical ambiance. Luckily we didn't have any problems with bugs indoors. There is a wide selection of older movies in the bathroom closet (we watched The Importance of Being Earnest). We also relaxed while watching the World Series on the flatscreen. The Wi-Fi signal was a bit weak and spotty, but it worked most of the time. In the evenings, we were visited by a couple of feral cats who curled up on our car to sleep during the storm. We're guessing they have been fed by previous guests and expected the same. The Cliff House is minutes away from Waipi'o Valley and not far from the town of Honokaa. We ate dinner at a gorgeous Italian restaurant called Cafe il Mundo in town, and there's a shop further down the road that sells locally grown coffee and macadamia nuts from Ahualoa Farms. This is a romantic and truly secluded location that we would recommend to all honeymooners. Thanks for the unique memories!
Jun 27, 2019As mentioned in most reviews, it would be hard to find a place to stay that would offer a better view. We found everything in order and had a great stay. Glad we stayed for 5 days. We will miss waking up to the cliff view and the tropical sounds surrounding the house when we get home!

Jun 27, 2019This is a one of a kind place that we really enjoyed. The tropical garden and view are out of this world. We were hypnotized by the view as the light glided across the ocean view and the Waipio Valley cliffs. The clouds were like a moving painting and the dark night sky was alive with stars. The cottage is filled with charm. Best bath ever as the deep soaking tub is in a screened room that looks out at magnificent view. Sit, stay, savor the setting!

Jun 27, 2019Perched a little over 700 feet above sea level, this secluded, thoroughly delightful listing has an outstanding view of The Big Island's NE coastline. The main windows in the house look NW directly up the coast, with Maui's Haleakala volcano looming in the distance. The house is rustic, very clean, thoughtfully decorated, and homey. The grounds are well manicured. The king-size bed is super comfortable. There is also a full-size bed in the loft (with a better view, if that's possible), but neither of us tried it out. Although the house will sleep more than two, the listing specifies no more than two, and three might make it feel a bit crowded. We will definitely be back.

The house was very clean and had everything we needed for a relaxing stay. We highly recommend Waipi'o Kitchen for a great meal nearby, and we also loved horseback riding in the valley (didn't hurt that the meet-up point was at the art gallery at the end of Kristan's driveway!).

Jun 27, 2019The view from Kristan's place is so incredible- you will regret when evening fills in and snatches it away! The jet bath in a screened room makes for a lovely soak. One guest in our party stayed in the loft for an extra fee and found it to be a very peaceful space and didn't have any difficulty with the ladder. There are a couple neighborhood dogs who like to come and visit and who seem to have been spoiled by previous guests- we gave them love, but refrained from giving them any snacks, which is what their sweet eyes seemed to really be asking for. We didn't get the chance to meet Kristan, but she clearly puts lots of thought in making this a comfortable space.

Jun 27, 2019We have stayed in 40+ AirBNBs and are always happy with the uniqueness of each but some place are simply *SPECIAL* - Kristan's Cliffside Hidaway is just such a place. Exactly as described, perfect for a quite relaxing few days. Be prepared for amazing views, sounds of the waterfall and millions (sounded like!) of frogs at night. Buy groceries in advance and just stay and relax!

Jul 27, 2019The Hamakua Hideaway Cliffhouse was a dream. It really is a magical location. We were able to walk into the Waipi’o Valley and our ATV tour left from the gallery right at the bottom of the driveway. It stormed during most of our visit, and it was quite dramatic to sit on the sofa and watch the thunder and lightning. The kitchen and bathroom are well equipped with all the things we needed for the trip. The gardens surrounding the Cliffhouse are so beautiful. I’m so glad we spent our whole week here in Kukuihaele. The locals were so kind and it was off the beaten path and unspoiled by tourism. We would love to come again!
Jun 27, 2019This place is absolutely amazing. Our minds were blown as soon as we got out of the car and took in the view. I had seen the pictures, but we were really speechless when we arrived and saw it in person. The home has so many unique and charming decorations. The screened in bath tub room is incredible to relax in and take in the views. I could go on but I’d just be reiterating every other review on here. Definitely check out the Waipio Cookhouse while you are staying here. The food is so fresh and delicious. I think we ended up eating there at least 5 times during our stay since it was so delicious and so convenient to walk to. Don’t hesitate to stay here!! We feel so lucky to have experienced it, and I can not recommend it enough.

Jun 27, 2019WOW! Book the cliff house without ANY hesitation. We stayed at three AirBnb's during our stay on The Big Island and this was by far our favorite. You can't beat the privacy or the views. It rained (poured) every day that we were in Waimea, but we were up early for sunrise to catch the incredible view of the Waipio Valley and enjoy the garden. The view left us speechless. Kristan gave us SPOT on directions to her place, the check in was EASY, she had darling vases of fresh flowers on the windowsill, and a sweet pup (that we named Charlie) that ran to greet us upon arrival. We enjoyed fresh coffee (beans, grinder, and coffee pot provided - stop on your way in for creamer) every morning and the soak tub on the screen porch by evening. We lit every candle in the house and enjoyed the rain falling outside. We used the ladder in the place as a drying rack for all of our clothes and ran the box fan to try and dry them out. Temps did drop in the evening and the rain made it feel colder than it was - pack a sweatshirt/sweatpants! While you're in town (Honokaa), stop at Gramma's Kitchen - one of our favorite meals of the trip + Cafe IL Mondo for the Hawaiian Pizza! Everything about our stay was memorable, right down to the frogs who put us to sleep each night! We will never forget it. Thank you, over and over!

They were SO friendly and we loved “adopting” them for our stay ;) It is such a serene and relaxing place, perfect to recharge. Can’t wait to come back!

Location is perfect for exploring the Waipi’o Valley as many tours leave from walking distance to the house and the overlook/road down to the valley is also walking distance from the house.

We were a little confused trying to find it (look for the little sign and just keeping going down the drive) but we loved the house, the beautiful grounds and the unbelievable view. The house is less than a half mile from the Waipi’o Valley lookout. We enjoyed dinners at the Waipi’o Cookhouse, breakfasts at Gramma’s in Honokaa, and checking out the art gallery / gift shop next door. We took our Jeep into Waipi’o Valley. It was a little sketchy but we made it. This whole area is very special and so relaxing!

Jun 27, 2019This is an enchanted location. The house is nestled in a very private area of Waipi'o with an incredible die for view of the Waipi'o coast (this will be the photo you frame). The home is quite adequate for 4, although 1 BR will require climbing a ladder. The shower and jacuzzi are beautifully equipped. Being in the middle of 'almost nowhere' in a generally wet area, the evenings are filled with symphonic sounds of a nearby creek and all kinds of critters. It rained both nights we were there. While totally protected sometimes it felt like we were in a platform tent (the outdoors-feeling part). The home is quite beautiful and nicely appointed. Plenty of towels, dishes, pots, frig, and stove. Internet was fine.
Jul 27, 2019This place is even more amazing than the photos can show. The location is unbelievable, right on the edge of the cliff beside a creek. Amazing sunsets and the sound of little frogs singing all night. I would love to come back! Kristan was very responsive as well. Make sure to pickup bug spray on the way since there's lots of mosquitos in this damp climate.

If you’re planning to do any sightseeing on this side you owe it to yourself to rent this place, you won’t regret it. Weather was great but even the couple of times it rained the view was still amazing. Waking up to that view in the morning was incredible. Can’t recommend it enough.

Beautiful view, while I couldn't see it there was always a light background sound of a waterfall along the edge of the property. Such an amazingly well put together and cozy house. Jun 27, 2019If you are considering a place to truly be able to relax, get away, and clear your mind and soul - this is the place. You will not find a more spectacular view from the sun room and couch, or upon waking up and looking outside. The jacuzzi room is inspiring. Kristan was a pleasure to communicate with and made the process easy. Definitely go down the valley with a 4WD vehicle and spend some time driving down to Hilo (and up Mauna Kea!). What a great place to finish our stay. For those used to needing cell phone, wifi, TV - great its there. For those enjoying the outdoors, its like your in the middle of a tropical forest. With most new places and new sounds, I would recommend some ear plugs at night as the frog choirs and birds can get pretty loud (but Kristan had some there too!) Very thoughtful on amenities (well stocked kitchen for making home meals - no microwave fyi). We would go back. I'm printing the photo from the patio we took on a large canvas for our house. Amazing scenery! Thank you!

Jun 27, 2019The Hamakua Hideaway House was by far the most unique and memorable stay we have ever experienced on vacation. The views were beyond breathtaking. No need for the Waipio Lookout- this has a better view! The rustic Polynesian-inspired charm of the house shifts you into pure relaxation and peace. We were always greeted by adorable kitties. Beautiful geckos around every corner (many photos were taken of them-and the kitties too). Incredible sunrises and sunsets every day. We can’t wait to return!

Jul 27, 2019This is my second time staying at Kristan’s place. This place is beyond beautiful, which is why I keep coming back. If you are looking for a place to rest and be in peace— you MUST stay here. The home is very beautiful— I really enjoyed the jacuzzi, falling asleep to my coqui frog friends, and the views in the garden and of Waipio are breathtakingly spectacular!! There’s also lots to do in the area: Waipio is just around the corner so you can take a trip down into the valley, or you can visit the town of Honoka’a and grab some ice cream while doing a little shopping. You can go horseback riding, and Waimea is not too far so you can journey over there and have a nice afternoon on their ranches or enjoy a lovely meal at Merriman’s. This is overall one of my favorite homes on Big Island so much that I chose it to celebrate my birthday. It is very special to me and I’m sure it will be to you too, if you choose to visit. I definitely recommend this home to all. Thank you Kristan once again for opening your home to me/us. I look forward to visiting again in the future. Have a beautiful day, everyone <3

Jun 27, 2019Kristan’s place is the place you’ll want to stay anytime you are on the Big Island! High recommended for a getaway and drop dead views from every room of Waipi’o Valley/Beach. As soon as we made it to the house, I was blown away with the flowers and orchids in/around the house. This is the perfect getaway for a couple. There’s also a waterfall right at the base of the house you can hear through the night, along with coqui frogs. I would definitely stay here again. Thanks for having us!

Der Blick auf das Meer, die grüne Küste mit dem Wasserfall ist denke ich die schönste Aussicht auf der Insel. Das Erlebnis der zwitschernden Vögel in der Nacht ist bemerkenswert. Außerdem hatten wir ständigen Besuch von zwei Geckos in der Küche und zwei Katzen vor der Tür. Das ist der richtige Ort für Naturliebhaber und Leute die keine Angst vor der Einsamkeit haben.

If your staying for a while be sure to bring groceries and food because there is only one restaurant in walking distance (its very delicious) otherwise your driving 10+ min to food. You can walk to the trailhead and its a great spot if you are looking to make the hike.

Jun 27, 2019I always try to look for really cool places or experiences when planning our trips and this one exceeded our expectations. My husband was like a little kid checking out the house and the view! We loved the eclectic Hawaiian decor, from the pottery to the vintage photos. Kristan’s description of the property is spot on. The view of the Waipi’o valley, the ocean and, on a clear day, Maui is breathtaking. We had a couple of gecko sightings around the house(they are harmless and adorable and keep the critters away!) and there were the 2 sweetest kitties that came to visit in the evenings. We walked to the Waipi’o Valley lookout (about a 10 minute walk), drove into the Valley in our rented jeep(that was so much fun!) and went horseback riding down there as well. The little store/art gallery nearby is great for finding Hawaiian made gifts. Just keep in mind that this is a rural area. We had to drive to Honoka’a to get gas, we drove to Waimea the first night for dinner because we waited too late to go to someplace local(7:30!). This is a great place and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a private, relaxing getaway with a most incredible view.

The two friendly cats greeted us every morning for a pat and some treats. we found ourselves spending half our time exploring the local attractions and the other half just sitting and enjoying that view with a wine and some cheese. I could never tire of this place and highly recommend it. grab some groceries at the nearby honokaa shops about 10 minutes drive away and enjoy!

Kristan was a very responsive host and we can't recommend this property enough for people looking for an escape into a remote area of Hawaii. Visitors should consider that the property does not have air- conditioning though. We did not need it with the nice cool breeze through the house at night, but the delightful sounds of the jungle may bother light sleepers. We loved the sounds but just something to consider (the house does provide ear plugs too). We also really enjoyed our hike into Waipio Valley and our meals at Gramma's Cookhouse!

Jun 27, 2019A stunning little hideaway full of charm with fantastic views. A great place to escape from the world. Be aware that the nearby restaurant, Waipi’o Cookhouse, is 'closed until further notice'. The nearest places we found to eat/buy groceries are about a 30min round trip, so it's worth stopping on your way in. The kitchen is well stocked with pans, utensils etc but doesn't have a microwave, and there is no BBQ outside. We loved our time at the hideaway and would definitely recommend it to those who want some alone time away from the hustle and bustle. It was very comfortable and had everything we needed, but the best feature has to be the stunning views!
Jun 27, 2019This was our second one-week stay in Kristan's place. Needless to say, we like it very much. It is near the end of the road leading to Waipio Valley and has an off-the-grid vibe. However, utilities, including fast WiFi, were reliable. The hot water was hot enough, but just. I think the on-demand heater is undersized of not set correctly. Filling the spa/tub with hot water, and no cold water, gives a plenty warm soaking with breathless views. (See my earlier review, and those of others, for a description of the first class views.) This place is best suited for a couple, although the loft could sleep another couple or a few kids. I would not recommend this, because the loft's ladder might be a bit of a challenge in the middle of the night. The grounds are a well manicured colorful garden that makes you feel like you're staying in a bouquet. We saw surprisingly few mosquitoes and didn't need to use bug repellent at all during our stay.

On the day we did leave, we were able to walk to the Waipio Valley trailhead, which meant we didn’t have to worry about parking. (Definitely visit!) There is so much life and beauty in this area of Hawaii. Did not want to leave. Kristan made check in and check out easy. I appreciate that she composts and recycles and happily sorted our trash accordingly. We would 100% come back.

Jun 27, 2019A little private Garden of Eden perched atop a spectacular cliff beside a waterfall! Can one ask for anything more? Just book it. You won’t have any regrets. Between, the location, the jaw dropping view, the warmth, and the charm oozing from every corner of this place, it’s something not to be missed. From soaking in the jacuzzi tub overlooking the view, to cozying up by the fireplace on a cool, breezy night, it’s pretty much perfect. There are also two adorable (outdoor/stray?) cats that wander the grounds that you might fall in love with. Our two nights here definitely topped the list of all the places we stayed during our week on the Big Island. We only wish we could have stayed longer. We’ll definitely be back.

Jun 27, 2019I was pleasantly surprised with this property. It has humble surroundings but the privacy and ambiance are amazing. We arrived amidst a once in a decade storm and power poles were knocked down in the area. We had no power but plenty of hot water and candles. In some ways it added to the experience. No media or electronics, just read a lot and talked. I would definitely recommend this property for quiet solitude with easy access to some great natural sites.

Jun 27, 2019An adventurous stay with the perfect view on the big island! Kristan’s home really immerses you into nature. From the charm of the open air layout, to the lush garden surrounding it. From the beautiful tub with a stunning view, to the engrossing sounds of the forest at night. It’s an amazing experience and we highly recommend it if you’re going to be on the north side of the island. It’s about as close as you can get to sleeping in a rainforest without actually sleeping in the forest!
