Summary

Hale Alani, 3 bed/1 bath, comfortable home. Kawaihae is between Kona & Waimea (aka Kamuela). Spectacular view of the ocean and coastline. Less than a 5 minute drive, but not walkable, to the Big Island's best white sand beaches. Close to restaurants etc. Tropical decor. Very relaxing.

Space

Hale ‘Alani features an expansive, blue ocean topped coastline view. An easy 30 minute drive from Kona International Airport (KOA), 10 minutes from Waimea, and 5 from the Waikoloa Hotels. Feel right at home in this adorable cottage. This 3 bedroom/ 1 bath home provides cozy, comfortable, accommodation for a family of six. Fully equipped with everything you need including WiFi. While it is usually breezy, keeping the temperature averaging a comfortable 75-80F year round, there is an air conditioner in the living room and fans in the bedrooms should the trade winds take a break during your stay. Decorated with bright tropical colors, in a vintage style, Hale ‘Alani invokes fun memories from the sixties and seventies... the shag carpet is fun for some, but if you are looking for modern decor, this is not the place for you. Grab the cooler, beach chairs, and be at the Big Island's best white sand beaches in about 3 minutes! It is a two minute drive to Kawaihae for a few groceries, a six

Everything was as advertised. Nice, clean, comfortable. We had a very good stay and it it was a very nice base for our exploration of Big Island and preparation and relaxation before and after the Ironman. Thanx Dorthe and Jan

A very nice little house and well-equipped. The area is convenient to Hapuna Beach and not very far from north Kohala. The house is unpretentious and fairly comfortable.

We enjoyed a pleasant stay at this cozy home in a very pleasant setting. The location is outstanding - close to Waimea, Hawi, and Kona. The neighborhood is friendly and quiet and feels a bit like old Hawaii. We enjoyed the ocean view and outdoor patio area that allows for great sunset viewing.

Although we did not meet Rachel she communicated with us what we needed to know.the cottage was as it appeared online though some things were a little worn. The location and proximity to sights and beaches was very handy though the neighborhood the house was in was very dense(as in neighbors were very close by)

Rachel did a great job of making sure the house was in good condition when we arrived. She was flexible with our early check-in and really made her house feel like a home for us. The house was right off the main road with the a awesome view of the ocean.

Rachel was great host for our week stay on the Big Island. She provided us an interactive map of nearby things to do. 3 miles from Hapuna Beach, 20 minutes from Pololu Valley, 2 minutes from Aloha Cafe for breakfast and about 10 minutes from Big Island Brewhaus for some craft beer and delicious food. The home was a bit difficult to find in the suburb which is nice since it is tucked away from the neighbors. Nice Patio with a hammock to relax after a long day. The house is fully stocked on just about everything from towels to beach chairs to boogy boards. There is 1 a/c unit in the living room which gets cold, the rooms however can get a bit warmer. Fortunately there were fans in each room to cool us down. I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a spot on the north end of the island.

GREAT LOCATION! Pretty much as close as you can get to the best beaches on the Big Island. Great restaurants are fairly close by. This is PERFECT for a family. It was awesome they had boogie boards and towels ready for us to use. Furniture was a bit older but it doesn't look drastically different than the pictures. No big deal though. Loved staying here. Thank you Rachel.

This is a lovely location to explore the northern end of the island. Very close to some of the best white sandy beaches, within easy drive of interesting hiking, but far from major grocery stores. House is a very nice, slightly rustic, patio home in a complex of similar homes. (Think log cabin instead of ski resort as a winter comparison.) Full kitchen was small (1 person only!) but very nicely appointed with all pots/pans/etc needed to cook for your vacation with a family-sized gas grill outside so you don't need to turn on the oven. Washer/Dryer was VERY convenient for our travelling family, too. Overall, this was a lovely start to our family vacation on the Big Island.

Rachel was very quick in her responses! The photos accurately captured the property. The descriptions were on point. The location was great for us to head to the beach, shopping, dinner, and the airport. There were plenty of amenities but we didn't use much since we were only there for a day. Details like dish soap, towels, boogie boards, and more would be perfect for a longer stay! The air conditioner in the living room was dreamy and an absolute must for those not used to the hotter climate. It can get toasty there. The bedrooms are not air conditioned but there are fans available. The cleaning fee for one day was a bit high but I knew about it and accepted it because I needed a place that held 5 people.

Rachel dialed this experience in for us. She ensured we had the lock box code prior to arrival, immediately answered any questions we sent her way via email, and had all of the windows and doors open to provide us with a nice, cool welcome. There were several things that made our stay especially nice, including body boards, snorkeling fins, a beach cooler and a Brita water filter pitcher. All unexpected and much appreciated! For those traveling with toddlers, we left our pack 'n play since we didn't want to pay the airline fee on the return flight, so rest assured that you'll have a mobile crib for your little ones at Rachel's place. :)

The house is in a good location - a short drive to 3 great beaches. The house was spacious (there were 3 of us) and is well equipped - bath and beach towels, chairs, a bbq, washer, dryer and indoor and outdoor eating areas. The beds were comfortable. It is a good value - nothing fancy -- but very comfortable. The photos are accurate. Rachael was always available - responded quickly to emails and made our stay easy. We recommend Rachael and this house.

Rachel was a great host and responded quickly to all of our questions. The house is in a perfect area for exploring the island and made a good home-base for our family. There are several towns nearby with stores and restaurants. You can drive to most attractions on the island in a few hours or just hang out on the beaches nearby. The house was clean and had plenty of towels and a nicely stocked kitchen. If you are looking for a luxury packed rental this might not be the spot you are after - but if you are looking for a good deal and plan on exploring the island you could not ask for more.

Rachel's place is great! We stayed for a week, and loved it. It has a great view and is perfectly situated to enjoy the Kohala beaches and everything the north end of the island has to offer. The house itself is small but perfectly set up, with a well equipped kitchen, cute and kitschy Hawaiian decorations, and, of course, that incredible view of the ocean from the patio.

The photos and the description of the place are accurate and the close proximity to the beaches was very convenient for us. We did all of our cooking at home and found most of the things we need available in the kitchen. It is a residential area with Route 19 located right in front of the property so if you are sensitive to noise you might want to bring earplugs for night time.

If you're looking for a local place to stay with a great view and a short drive to the beach, this is IT. Very reasonably priced. I felt like I lived here and did not want to leave. 5/5 stars.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Rachel's house while on the Big Island for a wedding. The house is great- clean, lots of room, nice backyard. The kitchen is well stocked and we cooked most of our meals there. There's also a great grill out back and a relaxing hammock. Volcanoes Nat'l Park was about a 2 hours drive. Kona was about 20 minutes away. The house is in a pretty secluded area off the main road, so no walking to stores or restaurants here. We had a great time and would love to stay here again!

We had a great vacation staying here. This place is very conveniently located close to the best beaches in the island and had a very homely feel to it. We loved the garden overlooking the ocean and the host had equipped the kitchen and home with everything we needed which made it very convenient- beach toys, plenty of towels, washer/dryer, a fully equipped kitchen etc. The few things we found slightly less than ideal were -There were a lot of cockroaches and ants roaming in the kitchen and even in bedrooms at night. This might be a norm in the tropical island. -The property is adjacent to a very busy freeway and so the garden has a constant traffic noise. The house windows do an excellent job of blocking the noise though so we did not hear anything while indoors. - There is only one AC in the living room and it takes about 3-4 hours for the bedrooms to cool down in April. - The garden and the home looks like it needed a bit of tending, though with the fertile land and weather, things probably grow and weather very quickly here.

The house was clean and comfortable with a lovely backyard complete with grill, hammock, table, and even an outdoor sofa. Dishes, soap, laundry detergent, towels were all provided. A really nice place to stay.

This is a cute bungalow; not fancy, but comfortable and affordable. Rachel was a great host and always responded right away. The view on the back porch is lovely, as is the breeze and lovely aroma of all the tropical plants in the yard. I wished I could take them home with me. The condo is very convenient for the more northern beaches that are less populated, yet were gorgeous. We thoroughly enjoyed snorkeling at Hapuna state park (fabulous beach), the Black sand beach. We liked the bungalo because it is removed from the big city tourist stuff, and not as uppity as the resorts; yet the drive isn't too bad to get to the Kona beach stuff either, such as a Luau and boat diving trips; but be aware of major delays near the airport until they finish the road construction, so add a half hour to your travel plans that go southward until the road work is finished. The other route across the Island or via Hilo might be best to get to the volcano park for now.

Great location and value for exploring the north end of the island. Close to Mauna Kea and Hapuna, two very nice beaches. The house was clean, comfortable, affordable and had everything we needed for a relaxing and enjoyable stay.

This place was perfect for the half ironman race and our group! It was 7 minutes from Hapuna beach where the swim is and not far from fairmont. We had everything we needed to cook, relax outside on the grill or inside with cable. The ac worked well for the common areas. The place had lots of color and charm. It was clean and there were lots of extra towels, beach things to borrow and a washer with clothes line. This was perfect for our group! And a great price!

The apartment was nice. Directions were easy to follow. The window unit really didn't reach back to the furthest two rooms so we had to stay in the smaller bed which was equally fine since it was just two people for two nights. The amenities were very nice and current.

Cute little older style duplex decorated in 60's style. Very comfortable affordable family accomodation. You Need a car. Close to beautiful Hapuna Beach- we spent 2 days there. We drove to observatory one night- took just over 1 hr. Not close supermarket/cafe. Good to have room to stretch out with kids. Soft sheets and towels. Very Clean. No dishwasher. Shag carpet. Neighbourhood quiet and residential. Good for short stay to check out white beaches.

This place is a decent value. The host was great in communicating with us and remedying issues when there was a problem. The inside is clean but dated.

We adored Rachel's place! Centrally located, you are just a short drive from countless beaches and resorts on the coast, and just 15 minutes from Waimea for groceries and restaurants. We loved this house as our home base for a wedding at Hapuna and exploring the whole island. The hammock, outdoor area, grill, and great kitchen make this the best deal on the island! Definitely rent a car, you will want to explore the whole island!

Cute bungalow, but noisy due to the nearby road. Not easy to get the bedrooms cooled. Nonetheless, we liked our stay because of the proximity to some stunning beaches and to the north.

This place is great! Three bedrooms with very comfortable beds. Great location overlooking the ocean. It’s up a ways from the Kona area but in a great location to see the island as everything is a reasonable driving distance. You will need a vehicle to get around the island and a parking spot right outside is available!

Comfortable and cozy house near some great beaches. Really enjoyed our stay and wish we could have stayed longer. Rachel and Debbie were great hosts and provided a great website with helpful local tips.

Rachel's place was truly amazing. I felt like I was walking into my 2nd home. The views are gorgeous and yet it's nestled away from the big hotels so you get the local experience. It was so peaceful and comfortable. The place is very spacious and would be great for a family or group of friends. I would absolutely stay there again. The back room on the right has a bed that's like sleeping on a cloud. Rachel gave very detailed directions that helped a lot for someone new to Hawaii. Rachel and Debbie were both readily available if I needed anything at all and I am so thankful.

We absolutely loved the place. It has a very different from atmosphere from a resort, or central tourist areas. It's old Hawaii. Nearby beaches are top notch, snorkeling is fab, you can eat on a patio under the stars, and the fact that the house is not far from a freeway and a part of a village just adds charm and a sense of realness. The selection of places in Rachel's guide is right on, kitchen has everything needed to cook (not groceries, I mean amenities), boogies, beach chairs, beach mats, towels, etc. - all clean and ready. We are coming back!

We felt like we were staying at our Hawaiian grandma’s house! While a bit dated, the house was spotless and well stocked with absolutely everything we needed for our beach adventures. The only drawback was the noise from the highway- it was pretty loud, but we knew that going in and it was worth it for the super close proximity to amazing beaches and great food.

Great value! Location only a minute or two from Hapuna beach, restaurants, gas, and grocery stores. Also a short drive into Hawi, Kailua, and Waimea. We had a great time doing the flume tour, and walking in Kailua as,well. You made our vacation affordable. Thank you so much.

Our family of four: mom, dad and an eight year old boy and 10 year old girl spent two nights at Rachel's house. If you have a car, then this is a fabulous place to stay for relaxing days at the beach. Spencer Beach is just down the hill-5 minute drive. Hapuna Beach is a little further-maybe 15 minutes-but so worth it-one of the nicest beaches we have ever been to. Make sure you do your grocery shopping on the way, either in Waimea if coming from that direction, or Kailua-Kona, because there is nothing nearby. The listing is clear that there is car and truck noise from the road. This is true. But it is the only noise. Otherwise it is very quiet and peaceful. There is less traffic after 9:30pm and it only starts again around 5am. We slept with the windows open for a breeze and I closed them and turned on the a/c when the traffic started at dawn. The a/c really mutes the noise. I am a very light sleeper and I slept fine. The garden is quite big, the kids had fun playing in it. There is a hose out back to rinse off feet and beach stuff. The decor is pretty, it has a very hawaiian beach vibe. The beds are very comfortable, we slept very well. The shower has good water pressure. We recommend this place, just don't expect to eat out in restaurants or pick something up. Be prepared and you will have a relaxing time.

Rachel's place was great and she was very responsive and accommodating. It has a great Hawaiian vibe to the decoration and a spacious outdoor area that we wish we could have hung out in more. Rachel's place was in a great location with excellent beaches nearby (10 min drive), Kona was accessible (about 25 min drive), Waimea was close enough to go to dinner (20 mins), and there is a delicious shave ice window just up the road (5 min North).

Rachel's place is fantastically located within a very short drive to all the big island's best beaches. Her place is comfortable, clean, and delightfully decorated with beach charm giving it the tropical island vibe. It had everything we needed along with fun beach gear to use. I would definitely recommend her place!!

Rachel was very kind and communicative before the trip. The unit is in a convenient location to explore Hapuna and the Kohala area. It is a very short drive to Hapuna beach and a relatively short drive to Waimea which had good grocery and restaurant options. All amenities listed were present including fully stocked kitchen and bathroom. Unfortunately, we were surprised by the condition of the unit. It is an older unit which has not been updated and the overall condition was not accurately represented in the photos. The highway noise is quite loud. If the pictures had been more accurate, we would probably have chosen another airbnb for our stay.

The place is at prime and private location next to best beaches on the Big Island. Family who would stay will find all necessary and in clean condition. Safe and well maintained. If come to Big Island again we will definitely try to stay there again. Mahalo.

Rachel's home is a great place to stay especially if you prefer a real person's home compared to more luxurious but sterile condominium locations. Artwork throughout home was especially appealing. Rachel is very prompt and responsible about communications and helped us with having an earlier check-in. Hapuna Beach and Spencer Beach are great and very short drives from the home. Potential downside is having only one bathroom, but it was not a problem for our family of four.

Very well cleaned and plenty of sleeping space for everyone. Space is a little dated but the value is very good. Very close to Spencer Beach and Hapuna Beach.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week stay at Rachel’s cute beach house. The ocean view is gorgeous and it’s just minutes away from my favorite beach Hapuna. She is more then accommodating, The house is stocked with everything you need. Definitely recommend!!

Rachel’s place was the perfect family hale! Very inviting, we loved all of the colors, decor and character Rachel’s place has to offer! The hammock offers breathtaking views to just relax after a fun filled day near Hawaii’s most beautiful beaches. Rachel is very quick in responding and goes above and beyond in hosting! Highly recommended Airbnb!

We were comfortable at this house, except that during the day the weather was hot but air conditioner is only in the living room. It is an old house, so there is wear and tare. It is comfortable and clean. Great outdoor space. It’s next to the main road, but noise did not bother us. The kitchen is old as well as some appliances so I was not inspired to cook much, only simple meals for kids. Liked spending time on outdoor patio backyard. The proximity to the great beaches and Waimea I liked a lot. Not sure it’s a best value for money though.

Very hot with no curtains and AC only in living room, my parents and I had to leave immediately after arriving due to extreme heat. Not so nice after a whole day of driving. Remained hot the entire time in bedrooms, even at night with fans on and windows open. Right next to highway, very loud at all times. Not worth the amount we paid for it. Very outdated place.

Six of us stayed here. There was plenty of space for all of us. The beds were comfortable and space was nice. The kids loved the hammock outside. We had a great time, easy to relax and enjoy ourselves. Rachel had some great recommendations of things to see and do, and was very easy to contact. There is some road noise, but that was expected with the location, right next to the highway. Location also made it extremely easy to get to places. As well, there are great public beaches a few minutes away.

All in all we enjoyed our stay at Rachel's place. Close to some of my favorite beaches. There is no TV unless you have a computer with Netflix. They do have wifi. House is vintage as described and could use a little update on ceiling fans, a Bluetooth speaker ( since no TV, music would be nice, and the stereo/ radio in bedroom is barely working. ) Old beds~ but nice sheets and mattress toppers! And shag carpet is definitely old and really should be replaced with flooring. Just my opinion. And be prepared with earplugs....the road noise can definitely be heard as the home sits just above the highway. Rachel is a great host and quick to respond to any questions or needs. Thank you Rachel.

The view from the back yard is amazing. We could see wales. The location is excellent, a short drive to Spencer beach and not too far to Waimea

If your expectations for accommodations are low, and considering that you are visiting Hawaii, not a third world country, and you don't mind staying in a poorly maintained property, you won't be disappointed. We knew this home was not a luxury property but luxury has nothing to do with proper maintenance of a rental home. AirBnB standard is to make the renters feel at home while staying at an AirBnB. This was certainly not the case at this location. We are not aware if there is an updated quality inspection from AirBnB

The condo is situated close to the main roads for the area making it easy to go anywhere on the northern part of the island.

Rachel's place was great. As advertised, it's not fancy or modern but had 3 bedrooms, bathroom and kitchen. we really enjoyed our stay. the location was great. view from the patio was awesome. only 3 minutes from the best beach on the island. I would stay here again. Great price for the location.
