Neighborhood Overview

The Kehena area is on the south east coast of Hawaii Island and encompasses several small, residential neighborhoods. Located along ‘Red Road’, named for the red cinder that used surface it, this is easily one of the most beautiful coastline routes you’ll ever drive. This area is home to Kehena black sand beach, sometimes called Dolphin Beach for the spinner dolphins that frequent it, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim or relax on the sand. To the south, lava has been flowing for over 30 years and is often visible from the Kalapana lava viewing area, less than 10 minutes away by car. Head north on Red Road to find some of the area’s other unique attractions: Pohoiki Bay at Isaac Hale Park is the local surfing hot spot, and also the boat ramp for lava cruises; Ahalanui Park has a georthermally heated ocean-side lagoon that is close to Jacuzzi temperature; the Wai Opae Tidepools at Kapoho Vacationland provide some of the best snorkeling in the entire state, where dozens of tidepoo

The Zen Lite space was even more then I could hope for for my Hawaii birthday adventure. This pace is even better then the pictures. It is clean, open bright, the check in process was superb, the space is quiet yet filled with amazing jungle sounds, the outside shower is to die for! You are also walkable to one of the best black sand beaches down the street. Overall this place surpassed all expectations and was a completely amazing place to stay. I would 100% come back here again!

The Len Light House was ideal. No issue finding the home and check in was a breeze with a lock box check in system. We had no need for a tour from the owner as the house was simple and perfectly appointed. There were other homes nearby, but the house was very private. We did not see any direct neighbors during our 4 day stay. There were ample linens and towels which smelled beautifully fresh. The house was spotlessly clean. The bed was comfortable for two and the house was cool during the evening with just the use of a ceiling fan and small desk fan provided. The outdoor shower was a dream as the sun was rising or after a long day of exploring the island. Plenty of hot water for two to take a comfortable shower. There was a great washer/dryer set off the back of the house; pack less and wash in the comfort of your home. The kitchen has a 2 burner cook top, no oven, small fridge, and outdoor grill. A good amount of dishes and appliances for cooking. We did not cook at the house; there were so many great places to eat in the town of Pahoa just an easy and beautiful 20 minute drive away. We had no issue with bugs or mosquitos in or around the house. There were plenty of geckos to watch scurry about and a symphony of frogs to listen to each night. From time to time you can hear the ocean but cannot see it from the house. Beautiful landscaping which made it nice to just relax on the porch and watch the wind blow. There were coolers and snorkeling gear at the house available for use. Lava viewing, hot springs, night market and black sand beach are all an easy drive away. The people we met around the neighborhood were so nice. We stayed at this location and another much more reviewed, much more expensive, much more popular location with AirB&B and the Zen Light house far exceeded our expectations. We won't bother staying anywhere else on the Big Island again.

The Zen Lite accomodation is a really awesome and special place to stay. Everything was exactly as described and clean and we felt very comfortable there. The furniture and decoration were really beautiful. Also one has to mention the beautiful garden. We absolutetly recommend this accomodation and would come back anytime.

We arrived quite late to Zen Lite so was pitch black when we got there. As it is very remote we were a bit apprehensive of where we were but when we found it it was amazing. The night was filled with the sound of frogs when we go there. The flat is a studio flat with a small kitchen which was perfect for what we needed - managed to cook spag bol no problem. The outdoor shower was fun too - and very much needed after visiting Black Beach a short walk away (a which we 100% recommend doing). Location-wise this place is perfect for seeing Lava too - just up the road (plus an 8 mile trek) is where the lava was flowing into the ocean.

Zen Lite is beautiful. We loved the location. When can you visit tide pools one day and see lava following the next?! Uncle Roberts market on Wednesday was great. Thank you for the comfortable accommodation.

Zen Lite was a dream!! The home was very peaceful, clean and exactly what we were looking for. I am very happy there was no TV. The bed was super comfy and being sung to sleep by the frogs was a dream come true! I would highly reccomend staying here, as long as you want to be outside of the busy city and in a quiet jungle atmosphere :) We will be back again!

Very nice place, peaceful, if love nature, stars and frogs. Well place to visit Volcano park and east coast. It is an hour away from the park. We love the shower out side and the room is nicer than the photos. Nice black sand beach five minutes walk away.

Nice location. No hot water at all for 4 days. Hot water restored to outdoor shower after 4 days. No hot water inside in bathroom or kitchen for my entire stay of 28 days. Host slow to tespond to my requests to be kept informed. Drinking water comes from well instead of catchment and even after provided filtration still tastes salty.

A beautiful cabin-style accommodation near a black sand beach... with all the comforts of home included. The kitchen is small, but has all the pots, pans, and utensils you should need. The WiFi works well... no downtime during my stay, even when it was raining cats and dogs. And, the tap water is filtered, so no running to the public spigot near Kalapana for drinking water. Speaking of water - there’s also a great outdoor shower (a must-have in Hawaii). Keep in mind, this is a subdivision with several houses within eyesight and earshot — the host is not at fault, obviously. There will be noise from traffic and people, maybe even power tools such as leaf blowers — why these unnecessary implements are not banned in such a place, I have no clue. Other than those external noises you have no immediate control over, the place is fantastic. It’s the ideal spot to base out of while exploring the Red Road and all that Puna has to offer.
