Neighborhood Overview

Welcome to Historic Holualoa! Desired by many for it's cooler elevation yet only minutes from the ocean and downtown Kailua- Kona. Located in the Kona Coffee Farm Belt on the slopes of Hualalai. Wake up to beautiful ocean views from this cottage in the country. Holualoa offers a post office, art galleries, restaurant and a small family convenience store. Drive 15 mins and you are in town for shopping, restaurants, ocean and beaches. The airport is 30 mins away. Holualoa does have roosters and coqui frogs which you will hear at night, especially when it rains.

Notes

Holualoa has roosters and during the rainy season we do have coqui frogs which can be a little noisy at night. This is common in many areas on the Big Island. The cost of electricity in Hawaii is very high and the hot water heater is on a timer. It's on from 5am-10am and 4pm-12midnight. To ensure hot water at other times there is a gray box mounted to the corner of the house, manually slide the switch to on and it takes about 15mintues for the water to get hot.

Transit

You will need a car if you want to get around. We are a short 15 minute drive to town with access to most everything you will need. There is a local family store in Holualoa with the basic necessities, post office, art galleries, a cafe and restaurant. There are many adventures and places to see and do on the Big Island!

Access

(SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Maps is the best way to find us. The route to Holualoa coming up Lako street is the easiest. Lockbox on entry door. Code will be sent prior to your arrival.

Sandy made us feel most welcome. She had great suggestions for beaches, where to shop, etc. The house was clean and comfortable. We cooked many meals in the kitchen and sat on the lanai to watch many sunsets. We loved how quickly we could get down into the hustle and bustle of Kona, and then how quickly we could get up and away from it all. Kona Country Cottage is a great place to stay on the dry side of the Big Island.

Exactly what the other reviewer said, close to everything but far enough away to enjoy it all. My family had a good time relaxing after a long day out and about exploring the island. Sandy was very welcoming and helpful. Everything you need to make the cottage feel like your second home. If your from a big city look up in the sky at night to see all the stars. Small convienence store and great restaurant 200 yards down the road.

We couldn't ask for more. The house was amazing. It was spacious, clean, nicely decorated, complete with basic necessities, and even beach towels are provided! Finding this beautiful house would be a little bit tricky but we got the hang of it. Highly recommended!

My family of 4 spent a great week on the Big Island and having a cottage on the mountain with a nice view on the sea was central. Sandy and Rachelle were great host and felt that the house had all the little necessities to enjoy our stay. We will definitely stay there again and recommend the cottage to anyone coming this way.

Sandy was an awesome host, extremely attentive to our needs! The location was perfect for our needs, it seems ideal for 3-4 people. We loved the location, close enough to downtown Kona, but still a distance away to get peace and privacy. If we came back here in the future, we would hope to stay here again!

We had a wonderful stay at sandy's house in Kona. She made it very easy for us to access the key and responded to our messages/questions super fast. The house is also very lovely and true to descriptions. We didn't have any problem with anything!

We spent 4 nights at the cottage and it was just perfect. Nicely decorated and lots of space for 2 people. We loved the Lani to sit and watch the sunset and listen to the coqui frogs at night. The cottage was equipped with everything you needed for a comfortable stay and some goodies left in the fridge for us to enjoy! Sandy and Rachelle were easily available to get in contact with and communication prior and during was fantastic via email. Location is great, away from the tourist resort town of Kona. Holualoa is set in the hills of a beautiful artist village with a great cafe and restaurant holuakoa gardens and cafe less than a minute drive away! Finding the cottage was a little tricky for us located on a private road but once you find some good landmarks to know where to turn its pretty simple. We would love to return and make our stay back at the cottage, we would recommend this place any day!!

Our stay at Kona Country Cottage was simply perfect. After travelling for many months and staying in many nice airbnbs, this was the best of all. The setting is more than idyllic, the cottage is incredibly cute and was perfectly clean and equipped. I almost cried when we had to leave. You can't find better value anywhere in Hawaii. Don't ever think of staying in a hotel there, they are all ridiculously overpriced. Honestly, you will not find a nicer place to stay anywhere in Hawaii. Thank you so much, Sandy!

We were welcomed with very clean setting up whole place which was cool enough after beach activities. We had beautiful sunset everyday!

Staying at Sandy's lovely home was amazing. My friends and I did not have the pleasure of meeting her because we were out doing so many activities but the moment we arrived I felt as if it was my own home. The locations was not to far from Kona and easy to find. The home was so clean and everything we needed and more was there. the nights were peaceful and the morning came with natures famous alarm clock...a rooster. The beds were so comfortable and spacious room for all our luggage. I would recommend anyone who is looking for a nice, peaceful, and a aloha filled home, Sandy's home is the way to go.

This was an awesome place to stay. Nice house, great location and lots of charm. Sandy was very nice and had the place very well prepared for our visit. Before you shop for anything see what other guests have left behind. We contributed a beach umbrella! Thank you for hosting us and for having a very nice house to share.

Staying at Sandy's place was painless and enjoyable. She left detailed instructions on how to find the location and check in and the place was very comfortable and more than enough room for my business partner and myself.

We loved this cute little home! Having the porch to sit on in the early mornings was so peaceful, and the evening sunsets were beautiful. The garden was an active place to observe, with lots of geckos, bird, and chickens, and full of plywood, avocados, limes, and other pants. Thank goodness for the air mattress in the closet! We ended up being that extra bed for my husband and two year old.

The place was great, and Sandy was very responsive. It is also a lot cooler here up on the hill than down by the beach, so I also recommend it for people wanting a place to sleep that is cooler. Great place, great host!

We loved staying in the upcountry cottage! It was so lovely to be near Holualoa-such a sweet spot. Coffee growing across the street and ranches up the road. Great walks! And we had everything we needed, including the water jug to fill up at the store. The home was clean and very nicely decorated. Best lanai ever-we spent a lot of time there. Mahalo for all the nice details.

Loved the Kona Country Cottage. The house was clean and well equipped with just about everything we needed. As described, those coqui frogs were in full force but we were use to them by night two! Enjoyed sitting on the lanai and watching the wildlife(hens, roosters, butterflies and geckos). Great location! Very private. Thank you Sandy!

Sandy made sure that instructions are clear and it was easy to find the place even at night. The cottage is located 500m above sea level and has a nice view of the ocean. The cottage is very clean and well kept. Sandy made sure that the cottage felt like a home away from home. Ample towels, full kitchen facilities, extra pillows etc were available . She made sure guests are really comfortable in the cottage. Loved the outdoor lounge area. Would have my morning breakfast there enjoying sea view and cool breeze. Sandy dropped by to see if I was comfortable. Really liked her personal touch in making sure I received the hawaiian hospitality. Cottage had a very good vibe and I felt very peaceful staying there . After the hustle and bustle of training and completing the Kona Ironman race, I felt good coming back to the cottage everyday.

The house is really nice and well located. Both bedrooms are good, one of the beds is pretty small for a full size though. It was clean and made my friends and I fell at home.

I loved this house! Our hosts were prompt with their communication, anticipating our needs. I loved the neighborhood - feeling very much in the country with the sounds of coqui frogs, ample fruit trees and high above Kona, but at the sane time close to restaurants and other activity. The 4 of us were very comfortable in this space. The lanai was incredible, the beds were comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped for our needs. We thought the location was perfect, peaceful and close to town. We will definitely want to stay here the next time we are on the Big Island.

Lovely spacious cottage in the midst of Kona coffee country! Beautiful sunset views. Loved sitting on the lanai and just hanging out. A nice home away from home. Easy access to all attractions in Kona, yet far enough from the crowds and tourist traps. Love to come back and spend more time soon. Very responsive and friendly hosts. Mahalo Sandy and Rachelle :)

A fantastic place to stay if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle of town. In the cooler hills but a short drive from everywhere. You feel surrounded by nature, we loved the frogs that croaked all night and didn't mind the roosters either. The house is difficult to find first time, you will need GPS especially if it is dark. Everything you need is there, very well stocked kitchen and plenty of space. We had a lovely stay and will definitely stay here again

Fantastic little cottage in close proximity to all things Kona. Quiet residential area surrounded by nature! Cool evenings and nights made for fantastic sleep. They thought of most everything you could need while here including ice chest, bags, etc. look forward to staying again!

We really enjoyed the privacy and the cleanliness of this house. The house had everything a guest could wish (parking, good wifi, kitchen, washer-dryer, and a beautiful lanai with a view). You do hear coqui frogs in the evening but they quiet down later at night. For us it was part of the charm, just like the roaming neighborhood rooster. Our hosts were also very responsive and helpful in their communication.

Maison très bien équipée. Il y a tout pour cuisiner. Très propre. Les photos représentent très bien l'endroit. Nous étions 5 et avons été très bien logés. Facile de communiquer avec l'hôte. Nous conseillons fortement cet endroit.

Location was close enough to everything we needed for our trip. We enjoyed the old local kine decor. Only set back is you can only take a hot shower during certain hours. They have the hot water heater on a timer, stumbling around the back of the house at 10pm to find switch then wait 15 minutes to shower was a bummer. I live on Maui and understand how expensive electricity is, however when you rent nightly and guests pay a good price they should be able to shower when they want. Setting a timer and leaving us with not hot water purpose unacceptable.

Beautiful home in a beautiful setting. With a lemon tree, an avocado and a lilikoi tree all in the yard. The cool town is just a 5 minute walk. Beautiful view of the ocean.

We loved staying at Sandy's place. She's so organized and really thinks of everything a guest could want. We'll definitely return. Be aware that there are loud roosters nearby in Holualoa who may wake you up. Aside from that, paradise!

Sandy's house is very well maintained and clean. The patio is very nice and the kitchen is well-equipped so we cooked several times. She is very considerate and let us check in a little bit earlier. There were several rosters in the first day but we didn't hear them later on. During the night there were some sound made by coqui frog (which we first thought to be birds), which doesn't bother us at all. In the storage room in the backyard, there are some boggie boards and sand toys. Anyway, this house is great for family.

We would absolutely stay here again! It was the perfect size, very clean and Sandy is wonderful. Any and everything we needed was there that we forgot or didn't bring. The tropical sounds were magical and the colorful tropical birds were amazing. The view of the city is amazing. What a great place, made our whole trip extra special. Thank you!

Excellent place to stay!! We enjoyed the cottage and would happily stay here again! In fact, we did at the end of our trip. We arrived at night, and it was fine getting into the house. The roads are windy and narrow, so take it slow driving. The bedrooms were comfortable. The view from the porch (ocean and plants) was wonderful to wake up to. We were glad to sit on the porch in comfy chairs. There were a few mosquitos, but we bought bug spray. If you'd rather sit inside, you can, and the screen door and windows make it feel like you're outside. We used the washer to freshen up our swimsuits from several days of scuba diving, snorkeling, and relaxing times on the Kona beaches (and with sea turtles!) Note, the frogs at night are loud and the roosters can wake you up in the morning, but we enjoyed the nature sounds!! The surrounding area was nice for a quiet stroll but a ~10-15+ minute drive from the busyness of Kona shops/places to eat. We walked just down the road to cute little shops (galleries and cafe), which included historic signs describing how the buildings were in the early 1900s. Kona and this cottage were a great place to stay - highly recommended!! Thank you Sandy for making it such a nice home.

We had a great time at Sandy's lovely place. It's a beautiful home away from the tourist crowds, close to coffee farms, with a view of the ocean. There is a little cafe and art galleries a short walk away. We stayed at Sandy's on two separate occasions. Everything was clean and organized for both arrivals- even all of the bathmats had been changed. The few downsides of the location were the roosters in the morning and the mosquitoes. Both were easy to overlook. I would highly recommend this cottage.

Sandy was very responsive, communication was clear and check-in and check-out very smooth. House was very clean and overlooking Kona with a great view from the pleasant outdoor area. It was a bit smaller than what I expected to accommodate our party of 2 adults and 2 children with no blinds on the window waking us up quite early. Probably not the most easy house to use for families but otherwise Sandy provides a BBQ, a cooler and everything which is needed to have a pleasant stay. Thanks Sandy!

Sandy's place is quiet and comfortable, in the sleepy town of Holualoa. Within walking distance to the few shops/restaurants in the town. Good location for exploring Kealakekua and Kailua-Kona. Neighborhood is quiet. The higher elevation means it rains more, especially in the evenings. Would definitely stay here again next time we are needing a place for a few nights on the leeward side. Nice spot. Mahalo nui!

This place is awesome. Has a great view to town and ocean from its balcony. There is also an amazing lime tree in the yard. Totally recommend it and would stay here again. The cutest little home in paradise! Super clean and well maintained. It really does feel like home! If you're looking for peace and quiet away from all the tourists, this is the place for you. We didn't see or hear a single person other than ourselves during the stay. Kitchen is perfect size for all your needs. Will most def come again!

This house is very good for family, you basically can get everything you want. We are morning person so we are very happy with the rooster (except it doesn't like camera very much and will run away if you take pictures). But if you're not that might be a trouble. There are also many kinds of different small wild animals and birds around and they are very friendly. There are also some harmless bugs, we don't really mind to get close to nature but it can be a problem with people who's afraid of bugs. The house is on the mountain so it will be cool at night so you can get a good sleep. You can also see the ocean right in front of the balcony. The room is big with fast speed internet and cables, you can get every cooking equipment you need. There is a moldy smell in one of the bedroom, it might due to the wood furniture since it basically rains every day here. Overall me and my family are very happy with this place.

We really enjoyed our visit in Kona Cottage. It is in a great location resting on the hill high above the city center, making it easy to get into town to pick up supplies or to eat at nearby restaurants. It's a lovely home and very tastefully decorated, and Sandy has done everything she can to make sure you'll have everything you'll need for a visit to this part of Hawaii. It is a tranquil location, You will go to sleep to the calls of Coqui frogs and awake to crowing of feral roosters (of which Kona seems to have a lot of). Just be aware that some of them can be early risers some times, so if you are a light sleeper, you might want to pack a pair of ear plugs.

The house is beautifully situated, so you get the cool winds and beautiful views...its a short drive into Kona! It was very cosy and had all the amenities...highly recommend

The house is perfect. Located on a hillside in the midst of coffee plantations. Immersed in a tropical lime garden, passion fruit and avocado. The patio from which you can see the ocean is great for dining. We were fine.

Sandy's place was even better than the pictures suggest. In a quaint, quiet spot with stunning views. This home is well cared for with beautiful furnishings and comfortable and well equipped. It is a cottage in a beautiful landscape. We needed about 10 Minutes to Kona with the car. The house is perfekt for four people. In the kitchen is everything you need. We had there a perfekt time.

The house is exactly as described, nice location, close to downtown Kona, the only annoying thing was the bird chirping noise at night and there were plenty of red ants, but that is expected in tropical places. Overall the view was amazimg from the house and we loved our stay and had a great time.

This is a terrific listing to stay at. My Mom and I stayed together for five nights and the place was just perfect for our needs. The check-in was easy, and our setup was top notch for getting around. To stay here, a rental car is a virtual must, but once that is secured, everything is a relatively short drive away. Very clean. Clear, though slightly robotic communication. Private and a bit away from the hustle and bustle. Avocado and lime trees in the yard and chickens clucking up and down the hill. Really, a very pleasant stay overall. Gets me and mom's stamps of approval.

The cottage is a great little oasis to stay at. I stayed here with a couple of friends for a girls trip and we loved the space. The kitchen has just about everything you need to make breakfast, lunch or dinner for people in long vacations. The foliage around the house and on the mountain is beautiful. Most of our time was spent out exploring the island or visiting local friends but we really enjoyed having a home to come back to and relax at.

This was an awesome place to stay. Beautiful view. Very clean. Everything as described, but better. Thoughtful touches, such as a notebook for guests to leave comments of their experience. We locked ourselves out--when we called they responded promptly and helped us get back in. We left some prescription eye glasses at the Airbnb and she is mailing them to us. Overall, we were very pleased. Great host!

Sandy’s place was a cozy and quiet retreat, up a big hill and pretty remote, but still just a short drive from the downtown area of Kona and the beach. We had a very peaceful stay!

This was fine for a couple of nights but we wouldn't have wanted to stay for an extended period. The ceilings are low, so if you're tall it feels a bit oppressive, and the kitchen is small and awkward. I was very relieved that there was spare cotton linen in the cupboard because the bedding was all polyester when we arrived. The lanai is a nice space and a good spot for coffee in the mornings. The location is good, easy access to cool places without being surrounded. If you go at this time of year (December) be prepared for the house to get cold at night.

Lovely, quaint little spot up in the hills. It's admittedly a little hard to find after dark (keep an eye out for a 25 MPH sign and a giraffe-printed pillar), but it's a great quiet refuge after a day out adventuring. It's a quick drive down to Magic Sands Beach Park, retail, and restaurants. Check-in was smooth, wifi was fast, water pressure was great! The kitchen is fully stocked, too, and we were able to cook some meals during our stay.

Very nice place in a nice location. Comfortable and very clean. Very remote and therefore you can hear roosters in the morning. This was pleasant for us. Very charming.

This is a very sweet cottage in a nice neighborhood. Very clean with all necessary provisions and a good location along the west coast for venturing out north and south. Yes, there are roosters in the early morning, so if that bothers you bring earplugs. We'd stay there again, but would bring slippers as it was chilly at night.

highlight was a nice veranda in a well-maintained, natural garden. house was simple but clean and ready for our arrival. kitchen was well equipped. about 15 minutes from the center of Kona in an artistic town close to cloud forests. highly recommended.

If you're looking for a cute little, secluded home this place is perfect! It was the perfect size for us to stay here and work remotely on the beautiful deck. You NEED a car to stay here, or to take an Uber/Lyft anywhere. The roads are not safe for walking on really and its an hour plus walk down to the beach if you do walk. There's a really cute café nearby as well, about a five-ten minute walk which we loved. We didn't meet our hosts but they were responsive to our booking messages. Thank you for having us!

Beautiful, quiet location! You're just barely out of Kailua-Kona (convenient for restaurants, shopping, etc.), but Sandy and Rachelle's place is upslope, about 1400 feet above sea level so you get a great view (although partial) of the town and ocean from the lanai. The lanai offers fantastic afternoon seating with filtered sun, shaded by a lemon tree. (Have you tasted lemon straight from the tree? These are almost sweet!) The cottage is very clean. Sandy and Rachelle have also provided beach goodies such as boogie boards and a cooler. Directions provided to get to the cottage were spot on and easy. Another beauty of this location is that you can avoid hitting huge delays coming back into town after your day's activities in the north. The state is working on the main highway (19) and afternoon delays stretched for miles north of town. If you take Kaiminani Dr (1st left south of the airport), it takes you up to Hwy 190 where you can navigate back to the cottage on a much more scenic drive, and in much less time. You must stay here.

While my husband enjoyed browsing through the books in the house about the island, my daughter and I loved sitting outside taking in the view and the local sounds of nature. This little cottage offered what you need to enjoy the beach which is a short drive and come back to cook out, which we didn’t stay long enough to do unfortunately. It was comfortable for our family of 3.

A wonderful home! We soaked in the location! Out of the crowds, surrounded by birds and lush vegetation. The local town is full of beautiful galleries, and has the best restaurant on the island!

We had a relaxing stay at Sandy's cottage - it is spacious for our family of four. The cottage is up on a hill and a little hard to get to/find particularly when we checked in at night - Sandy and Rachelle provided clear instructions/directions which helped. Like other previous guests, we enjoyed sitting in the lanai (outdoor lounge) where we had our breakfast while enjoying the view and surroundings - watching the birds that occasionally perched on the nearby tree and feeding the chickens with bread crumbs. The kitchen is well equipped and we were pleasantly surprised to find bottles of spices and herbs in the fridge which we used to prepare our breakfast. There are also beach towels which come in handy when we went to the beach. There are also a washing machine and dryer with washing detergent in a shed behind the cottage.

Wonderful spot high up the hill but close to town and beaches. The patio is very comfortable with a great territorial view. Enjoyed our stay at this lovely place. The Holuakoa Cafe and Gardens is minutes away and a great spot for coffee and scone or a gourmet dinner.

You feel very much at home here. The deck is great for relaxing and the house is very neat and clean. I enjoyed been above town - a quieter experience and not a far drive from about needs you might have. I will book it again when on the island

Sandy's cottage is just what you need as an alternative to the tourist strip in Honolulu. Quiet, with great views, the cottage is very well-equipped, and the hosts are easy to contact and very responsive. We spend 4 days exploring the Big Island, from the volcanoes to Merriman's restaurant. We highly recommend Sandy's and the Big Island.

Sandy was a great host! Very cheery and nice! The house was well equipped for us! We had a great time using the beach items that were provided and they had plenty of towels, great kitchen equipment. The location was very central! I would suggest having a car+ you will want to have some adventures while you are in the Kona area! We loved the cottage- was great for an unfussy group of travelers. Hope to back soon for a longer stay. Ken and Molly

Nice, quiet home that is near enough to Kona to make everything really accessible. Good location if you want to avoid the cost and bustle around the main town area. The home was just a bit tricky to find but does show up accurately on (Hidden by Airbnb) Maps. The home is tidy, comfortable, and well appointed. The beds were a bit springy for my taste but I still slept well. Didn't have any major coqui or rooster noise issues during our brief stay. The washer/dryer behind the home are quite old and the dryer did not work for us. May have been user error but would have been nice to dry our towels. A good value in the area if you want tranquility and space.

The cottage is located in a cosy village close to many art galleries that we really enjoyed. Is was perfect for us, two adults and a child. It has a new bathroom and elegant wooden furniture. We really appreciated our stay and we recommend it for other families.

We stayed only one night at Sandy's place, escaping from Hurricane Lane and the east side of the Island. We endured about 3 feet of rain in 3 days, and fled after worrying we wouldn't make it to the airport for our flight out with all the flooding and mudslides. We were able to book the place that morning, arriving only a couple of hours later. So great, abd deeply appreciated!! Better for us than a hotel by a long shot as we like to cook our own healthy food. We found the place extremely clean, well organized, and well appointed with everything we needed. Its a sweet little place. Our only complaint, really, is that it is so small! Low ceilings, tight little kitchen and sitting room, and for a family of 4 with two tall teenagers it would have been too small to be comfortable for more than one night, at least for us - and especially on vacation, it would not have had enough stretching and relaxation room. But everything else was great!

Sandy's house was the perfect place for us. Within walking distance to the little town that was full of art galleries mostly, a small food mart, and restaurant. we were lucky to hit First Friday and the little town becomes a festival that fills with lots of people, musicians and food. The house itself is immaculate, a newly remodeled bathroom that was spacious with plenty of counter space, tastefully furnished rooms with the most comfortable beds. The location is perfect for hanging out in the Kona area. Fell in love with everything this Hawaiian bungalow had to offer....including the music of the Coqui frogs.

We loved this little cottage in Holualoa. It had everything we needed in the kitchen plus had a bunch of beach toys for use. It was at the perfect elevation with very comfortable temperatures. We were able to make fresh squeezed lemonade due to the huge lemon tree outside. Washer and dryer worked great and was able to do laundry with out a problem. Always had hot water for showers when we needed it. Roosters do crow in the morning but the local rooster next to this house does it maybe for max 15 seconds and to us was just part of the experience. We were used to it and it didn’t wake us up or bother us. There were beautiful sunsets from the lanai. Overall this was a great air bnb experience.

We had a great stay at this place. Sandy and Rachelle were very responsive to my calls. The garden around the house is a bonus, we loved exploring the trees. There are lots of roosters so we got the natural alarm go off at 5 am, if you dont mind that, you will certainly enjoy the stay. One word of advise is that this place can be hard to find the first time, so if you are checking in, try and get there when there is some sunlight. Also the road is very steep, so if you are renting a sedan, you are guaranteed to have some scratches under the bumper no matter how slow you turn. We enjoyed our stay here and I will recommend it to others.
